Abstract: Baudouin's theory according to which 'the linguistic sentiment of the speakers represents a positive category, verifiable in reality' has been confirmed by our analysis of several dialectological texts that Baudouin himself gathered in the Slavic-Romance area. The observation of the unconscious operations of language and the degree of awareness a 'guileless' speaker may possess about them in comparison to a linguist allowed on the one side to distinguish between the manifestations of the logic vs. psychological activity, and on the other side to record various points of intersection between the spontaneous 'linguistic sentiment,' which is often unpredictable, and the linguistic awareness as a product of superior elaboration, typical of a specialist. In such a delicate sphere, the research was made easier by the perspicuity of the documented phenomena and favoured by the nature of the texts, which displayed an interaction of the codes in the competence of a multilingual speaker, laying bare the otherwise 'disguised' processes. Although the analysed data are relatively limited, their quality has allowed us to draw some interesting conclusions, especially with regard to the different syntactical and semantic behaviours of the items, depending on whether these concerned the language, metalanguage or pragmatics.
