Indonesia's new muslim intellectuals
Carool Kersten, 2009, original scientific article

Abstract: In recent years, there has been a growing appreciation among scholars with an interest in contemporary Muslim thought for the contributions by Indonesia's new Muslim intellectuals. The realisation that Indonesians are in the vanguard of a significant rethinking of the place of religion in the present-day Islamic world is helped by the progress in the research on Southeast Asian Islam and resultant corrections of the received knowledge of its place in the context of the wider Muslim world. While in the existing literature this new Indonesian Muslim intellectualism is closely associated with 'neomodernists' belonging to the first generation coming of age in the postcolonial era, I propose to regard it rather as part of a discursive development traversing three generational shifts embedded in an increasingly articulate understanding of Indonesia as an integral part of the Muslim world and Islam as a constitutive element in Indonesian culture. These new Muslim intellectuals, who pair an intimate familiarity with the Islamic tradition to an equally solid knowledge of advances in the Western human sciences, are exponents of an emergent cosmopolitan Islam in which the dichotomy between 'Islam' and 'Other' or the binary opposition 'tradition' versus 'modernity' collapse. Most recently it has culminated in a generation of articulate young Muslims exploring the possibilities of hybrid forms of 'liberal Islam' and 'post-traditionalist Islam'

From Braudel to Derrida
Carool Kersten, 2011, original scientific article

Abstract: This article examines Mohammed Arkoun as one of the pioneers of a new Muslim intellectualism seeking new ways of engaging with Islam by combining intimate familiarity with the Islamic civilizational heritage (turath) and solid knowledge of recent achievements by the Western academe in the humanities and social sciences. It will show how his groundbreaking and agenda setting work in Islamic studies reflects a convergence of the spatiotemporal concerns of an intellectual historian inspired by the Annales School with an epistemological critique drawing on structuralist and poststructuralist ideas. Influenced by Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutics and the deconstructionist philosophy of Jacques Derrida, Arkoun evolved from a specialist in the intellectual history of medieval Islam into a generic critic of epistemologies, advocating a concept of so-called 'emerging reason' which transcends existing forms of religious reason, Enlightenment rationalism and the tele-techno-scientific reason of the postmodern globalizing world. This article concludes that Arkoun's proposals challenge the intellectual binary of the West versus Islam and the historical dichotomy between the northern and southern Mediterranean

Bold transmutations
Carool Kersten, 2007, original scientific article

Abstract: Following Ebrahim Moosa's suggestion regarding fresh approaches to the study of religion by relying on other scholarly specializations such as Translation Studies, this article attempts to apply the achievements made in that relatively new field of academic inquiry to the Egyptian philosopher Hasan Hanafi's contributions to the radical rereading of usul al-fiqh. Refracting Hanafi's first publication, Les méthodes d'exégèse, through notions and concepts developed in Translation Studies will demonstrate the boldness of Hanafi's innovations. Such an alterative assessment of this early work will also evince that the theoretical foundations for his better-known writings from the 1980's, on "Leftist Islam" and the ambitions "heritage and renewal" project, can already be discerned in this text from the 1960s
