An optimisation model for optimal and sustainable distribution
Rok Strašek, 2013, original scientific article

Abstract: In many companies, a large share of costs in value chains is due to the distribution logistics. The problem is known as the vehicle routing problem (VRP) and many different algorithms are used for approximate solutions. The main point of the problem is to carry out deliveries from the central storage facility to all customers incurring minimal costs. This paper aims to present development and implementation of such a model and its application for a special distribution and customer network. Although the conceptual idea of the model is primarily based on the economical cost optimisation and consequentially on as much profit as possible, the model can simply be upgraded with ecological or environmentally friendly aspects. So the aim of the model is an optimisation tool upgraded by sustainable development of logistics and distribution.

Sustainability of banks' efficiency of EU member states and the association with economic performance
Igor Stubelj, Primož Dolenc, 2013, original scientific article

Abstract: The goal of the present study is to examine the sustainability of banks' efficiency in the EU27 member states in the period from 2005 to 2008 after the last enlargement of the EU and to test for eventual association with economic performance. We were interested in the differences of the banks' efficiency among the EU 27 member states and especially in the differences between old and new EU member states. To measure the efficiency we apply the data envelopment analysis (DEA), which is a non-parametric method. We found large differences of efficiency among the old EU member states. We were also interested in eventual association between economic performance and banks' efficiency. To do so we used a panel regression analysis and did not find any significant correlation between economic performance and banks' efficiency.

Efficient energy use and renewable sources of energy in Slovenia
Štefan Bojnec, Drago Papler, 2011, original scientific article

Abstract: This paper presents unique survey results with opinions on the competitive supply and efficient energy use, sources of energy and renewable sources of energy. The multivariate factor analysis with three common factors confirms the significance of the price competitive supply of energy, energy costs for the economy, and the sustainable energy supply development and ecological perception in the energy use. Among renewable sources of energy, significance is given to the solar, hydro, biogas, and biomass energy, where the energy useand the renewable energy production in agriculture can play a greater role. Education and promotion activities are expressed as important for strengthening the knowledge, awareness, and social responsibility of the sustainable energy development and the use of renewable sources of energy.

The relationship between concern for environmental sustainability and the capacity for wisdom and other factors among postgraduate business students
Bernard McKenna, Roberto Biloslavo, 2014, published scientific conference contribution

Abstract: The paper presents the results of an exploratory international survey, excluding USA, of postgraduate business students including MBAs. The central purpose was to consider the relationship between the propensity for wisdom and adopting an ecological perspective that is more compatible with long-term planetary sustainability. Other variables were considered. Students were more inclined to the New Ecological Paradigm [NEP], with a significant strong correlation between the level of wisdom and environmental concern. Stronger NEP and wisdom scores were positively correlated with subjective wellbeing and psychological wellbeing. Although there was no correlation between gender and wisdom, there was a positive correlation between wisdom and those with children as well as those who are partnered, suggesting the importance of experience in wisdom formation. Gender also did not correlate with environmental concern. Students reasonably strongly agreed with sustainability being a significant part of the Business degree curriculum. Further curriculum implications are provided.

Corporate sustainability and economic performance in small and medium sized enterprises
Štefan Bojnec, Blaž Simčič, Nastja Tomšič, 2015, original scientific article

Abstract: Various studies have investigated drivers of corporate sustainability, however only a few attempts have been made to link corporate sustainability and economic performance of enterprises by measuring labour productivity in new European Union member states that have transitioned from socialism. This paper analyses the link between corporate sustainability and economic performance, by simultaneously using the following control variables: human capital, the innovation process, leadership, and European Union policy for small and medium sized enterprises. Findings from a sample of 645 Slovenian small and medium sized enterprises reveal that the corporate sustainability and economic performance of enterprises represent complementary performances. Thus, enterprises should constantly balance their economic performance with social responsibility and environmental protection to maintain successful sustainable operations in the highly competitive markets. It was also shown that leadership has a significant positive effect on corporate sustainability. Additionally, leadership should create a favourable and collaborative environment for the innovation process and invest in human capital. Human capital causes innovation, which has a significant positive influence on corporate sustainability, which in turn has an effect on the economic performance of enterprises. Small and medium sized enterprises could improve corporate sustainability also by familiarising themselves with European Union policy support mechanisms that target their growth, development and competitiveness. The findings helped to develop an original structural equation model on simultaneous causalities between corporate sustainability and economic performance with selected control variables.

Communicating forest sector sustainability
E. Korhonen, Anne Toppinen, K. Lähtinen, L. Ranacher, Andrea Werner, Tobias Stern, Andreja Kutnar, 2016, original scientific article

Abstract: Communication is an important tool in maintaining legitimacy and acceptability of forest sector operations and activities, and expectations by the general public on the forest sector conduct in Europe are in general very high. Despite this, there is scarce research in crossnational context on how forest sector sustainability is communicated to the general public, and what development areas can be identified in terms of communication content. This study applies a qualitative content analysis in four forestry-rich European countries (Austria, Finland, Germany and Slovenia). The state of online communication of 61 companies and 19 industry associations was qualitatively analyzed in 2014 with a focus on eight core sustainability topics of interest that were identified via an international forest sector stakeholder feedback process. Our results show some great similarity, but also some interesting differences in terms of communication frequency and weight of hot topics across countries. The most frequently communicated area was economic contribution of forests (in Finland and Austria); debate over forest conservation versus production (Germany) and the concept added value of wood (in Slovenia). With the exception of Slovenia, role of forests in combatting global warming was emphasized more frequently within industry associations than among individual forest industry companies. Characteristically, current content of sustainability communication focuses on supplying factual information. Thus, there is a need for developing more targeted and bidirectional forms of stakeholder communication in the future, emphasizing also more active use of social media channels and empowering organizations to promote interactive communication and collaborative learning.
