Prioritizing fishery management for loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) conservation in the northern Adriatic Sea from reproductive value analysis
Bojan Lazar, Selina S. Heppell, 2009, published professional conference contribution abstract

Abstract: Fisheries bycatch often affects particular size classes of turtles. Because of the late age at maturity, the reproductive value (RV) of small juvenile, large juvenile and adult loggerheads vary by orders of magnitude. RV provides a relative measure of value for individuals, thereby allowing us to estimate the effects of different stressors based on the number of animals killed. Using RV as a comparative index, we assessed the relative impact of trawl and gillnet fi sheries operating in the northern Adriatic Sea on loggerhead populations. We tested several scenarios for bycatch in both fi sheries which signifi cantly differs in the size of captured animals and mortality. Despite high bycatch rates, bottom trawl fi sheries result in direct death of fewer loggerheads (156-260 vs. 346-486 in gill nets), but affect individuals that are older and hence have higher RVs. Because of data limitations for vital rates and bycatch estimates, we looked at a distribution of potential impact for each fi shery. Lessons learned include the need for relative impact assessment because of the sensitivity of adult RV to parameters such as clutch frequency, sex ratio and remigration interval. We anticipate that our analysis will help managers prioritize needs for regulation and mitigation among different fi sheries.

Organizational values and firm growth
Vesna Laissani, Boštjan Antončič, Jasna Auer, Arzu Ulgen Aydinlik, 2012, original scientific article

Abstract: Organizational values can be important for firm performance and competitiveness. The focus of this paper is on organizational values and their impact on firm performance in terms of growth. A hypothesis about the relationship between organizational values and firm growth was developed and empirically tested. Data were collected from firms in Turkey via a structured questionnaire. The hypothesis was tested by using regression analysis. The findings give an indication of the impact of competition-related and person related organizational values on firm growth.

Agricultural land markets and land leasing in the Republic of Macedonia
Neda Petroska Angelovska, Marija Ackovska, Štefan Bojnec, 2012, original scientific article

Abstract: This paper aims to identify the driving force that shaped agricultural land structures, land market and land leasing in the Republic of Macedonia. Institutional developments and land reforms have so far been modest, and have not contributed to significant changes in agricultural ownership, operational structures, or land market and land leasing arrangements. Land ownership and land use are bimodal, consisting of several small-scale family farms and a fewlarge-scale agricultural enterprises. The small family farms own and operate land on several small parcels, which is one of the major obstacles to the modernisation of family farm production. They produce food for household subsistence with mixed crop, fruit, vegetable, grapevine and livestock production. A considerable portion of the land is uncultivated, which affects land market and land leasing values. Due to underdeveloped institutional frameworks and market institutions in support of small-scale farms, a large proportion of state-owned land is rented by agricultural enterprises.
