Pirančan Tartini s kombinacijskim tonom proti D'Alembertu
Stanislav Južnič, 2006, pregledni znanstveni članek

Opis: The article describes the achievements of the Piran violinist Tartini in mathematics and physics. It also speculates on the reasons why Tartini's original mathematical ideas have remained relatively little known, while his ideas in physics have come to represent one of the foundation stones of modern acoustics. In looking for possible causes preventing a greater influence of Tartini's ideas on the mathematics of his period we have studied the works of prominent contemporaries of Tartini, especially the mathematicians D'Alembert and Euler. Unfortunately, the lead mathematicians of his time published their mathematical studies of music parallel to Tartini, but on a higher professional level. With his mathematical knowledge, Tartini was not able to compete with them, irrespective of the depth of his ideas. He was thus rather disappointed at the unexpectedly lukewarm reception of his Treatise, published the same year mathematician Jurij Vega was born. The article points out another parallel between Tartini and Vega: they both cooperated with Paris astronomer, mathematician and freemason Lalande. Although Tartini aspired to glory in mathematics, he achieved it in physics. His research into the combination tone and other novelties in the theory of sound were fully corroborated, thanks to more improved experimental equipment, only a century after his death. Tartini's discoveries were cited with great respect by all prominent researchers of acoustics of the late 19th century, in particular by Helmholty and the Nobel Priye winner Rayleigh, confirming his importance in the field of the theory of sound.

Piranski sliki Angela de Costerja
Vesna Kamin Kajfež, 2008, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper will attempt to shed some light on the current state of knowledge concerning Angelo de Coster, a Venetian painter of Dutch origin, who is known to the art-historian community only as the author of two large canvases - The Miracle of St. George and The Mass of Bolsena from the parish church of St. George in Piran. At the same time the author of this paper wishes to discuss new archive sources and to emphasize the iconographic problems, concerning primarily the rather uncommon depiction of The Mass of Bolsena. Until recently, the known facts about the life of Angelo de Coster were relatively scarce. He came from a Duch family of painters. His father, Pietro de Coster, is well known in comparison to his son and was educated in Amsterdam in the circle of painters like Jan Cossiers and Abraham van Diepenbeeck. Angelo de Coster was born in Venice on the 22nd of November 1680. At present we do not have any information concerning the beginnings of his education. It is likely that his first education as a painter took place in the workshop of his father Pietro. Further on in his career he worked in the workshop of Johann Carl Loth, who was the head of one of the biggest workshops in Venice in the middle of the 17th century, where painters like Daniel Seiter and Johann Michael Rottmayr were educated. At the start of the 18th century Angelo de Coster ventured to Rome to the Accademia di San Luca, where he competed in several competitions, which provided an opportunity for the artists - painters and sculptors - to combine their theoretical knowledge with practical work, In the year 1704 he was commissioned to paint both paintings in Piran. Antonio Alisi postulates that both paintings were commissioned by the members of the fraternity of St. George from Piran. On the basis of archive sources the author of this paper establishes, that the painting The Miracle of St. George was in fact commissioned by the members of the brotherhood of St. George, while The Mass of Bolsena was commissioned by the members of the fraternity of Corpus Christi. The Miracle of St. George depicts a scene from the 21st of July 1343, when this saint saved the city of Piran from the dangerous tempest. The Mass of Bolsena is dated and signed on the base of the capital: MDCCVI / PIN. ANG° DE COSTER VENE. The Mass of Bolsena depicts fatherPeter of Prague as he gives holly mass in the town Bolsena in the church of St. Christina. The painting from Piran depicts the moment of miracle of the eucharisty during the holly mass as blood starts to flow out of the consecrated host and floods the altar cloth. This miracle was a consequence of the priest's doubts concerning the transubstantiation, the moment when bread and vine turn to the body and blood of Christ. Most likely Coster became familiar with this scene during his stay in Rome, when he competed in two competitions at Accademie di San Luca. The Mass of Bolsena is not a commonly depicted motif. The most famous depiction of this scene is probably Rafaelćs depiction on a fresco in the Pope's Palace (1511-1514). The author lists some other examples: frescoes in the cathedral of Orvieto, the paintings by Francesco Trevisiani and the painting by Francesco Robbia. The data regarding the last years of Coster's life are scarce and it is not clear what he did during that time. The question of his opus remains open as well

Tri prazgodovinske naselbine na slovenski obali : revizija izkopanega gradiva s Sermina, Kaštelirja na Kortami in iz Pirana
Maša Sakara Sučević, 2008, pregledni znanstveni članek

Opis: This article will discuss three prehistoric sites on the Slovenian cost, two of which, Sermin and Piran, are situated on the coast, while the third, Kaštelir above Korte near Izola, is located further a few kilometres further inland. Sermin and Piran were both hillside settlements that extended from the top of the range to the foothill situated by the sea. Kaštelir, on the other hand, is more typical of the region with settlement focused only at the summit of the hill; this mode of landscape use is known locally as castellier. Sermin has been dated through pottery evidence from the Late Neolithic to the Early Roman period. The prehistoric periods are evidenced especially at the foothill, spanning from the Neolithic, Eneolithic, Bronye and Iron Age, while little material is known from the summit of the hill, which was probably settled during the Iron Age. Kaštelir above Korte represents one of the largest castellieri in Slovenian Istria. The oldest ceramic evidence found herein has been dated to the Eneolithic and the enclave was occupied throughout the Bronze and Iron Ages until Roman times. The most significant artefact recovered from this site was an Apulian krater, the only such example excavated to-date within this region. This find, which probably belonged to a grave within the rampart, demonstrates the importance of the site during the 7th and 6th centuries BC. The ceramic evidence from Piran points to a period of occupation spanning from the Eneolithic/Early Bronze Age through the Bronze and Iron Ages to Roman times. During the excavations undertaken in 1988, focussing specifically on the Piazza Vecchia, a nearly complete vessel, possibly an urn, was discovered. Two daggers are also noted from the site (Šinkovec, 1995), which, in combination with the find of the vessel (caveat: the identification of the vessel as an urn is open to debate), would support the interpretation that a necropolis was located on this site. Owing to the revision of material from these tree sites, the earliest settlement of the region and its importance throughout Prehistory can be presented, finally culminating in early Roman settlements along the cost and the inland
