K pojmu medkulturnosti pri Deweyu
Lenart Škof, 2007, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The first part of the article deals with Dewey's pragmatism and its relation to intercultural philosophy. Already Deweyćs early thought took into consideration the importance of intercultural philosophy, and the article points out some elements in his thought that reveal the hidden potential of Dewey's philosophy for contemporary intercultural philosophy. It also discusses several characteristics of pragmatism with regard to intercultural thought, and lays special emphasis on Dewey's stay in China, which gave rise to a new epoch of intercultural contacts between the American and Chinese philosophical and political tradition. Furthermore, it highlights Dewey's social philosophy that gave this American philosopher of classical pragmatism the platform to develop his notion of democracy. The second part of the article suggests a possible way of applying Dewey's social philosophy to modern political theories as developed by Latin American, African and Indian philosophers. The questions posed by the article relate to the currently very topical intercultural North-South divide and related issues of poverty and social inequality. They place special emphasis on the notions of freedom as developed by the West and the South, thereby proposing a possible alternative understanding of the Western notion of liberal democracy

Medijski pluralizem in dinamika menjav političnih elit
Matevž Tomšič, 2007, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The article deals with the analysis of relationship between the character of the media sphere and political dynamics and the profile of political elite. Media as a framework of social and political communication exert significant influence on development of open and democratic society. Democracy as political system is based on competition between different political actors for support of the citizenry as well as on the balance of power between different political institutions and branches of government. The main thesis of this article is that a certain level of elite circulation, in terms of continuous change on top positions in political space, is necessary for sustained and developed democracy to take place. These changes - or at least the prospect of them - that are related to the existence of feasible alternative to incumbent ruling elite contribute to the maintenance of relative dispersion of power, thus preventing its monopolization by the hand of political group of any kind. Media pluralism is one of the factors that importantly contributes to this elite circulation. It provides different individual and groups with a chance to present their views, ideas and problem-solutions in public on the equal basis what enables the voters to make an informed political choice. Furthermore, it is important for the citizens to have opportunity to get information from different sources. In this regard, the media space should be composed of media providers that follow diverse political and ideological orientations, thus dealing with particular political and social issue form different angles, in order to perform its democratic function. The author shows the connection between the structure of media sphere and dynamics of change on power position on the case of post-communist Slovenia. He argues that weak media pluralism, in terms of prevalence of particular ideological orientations in Slovenian media and political affiliation of most opinion-leaders to particular political camp, contributed to long-term dominant position of this camp in Slovenian political space

O zgodovinskih sporih in preobratih v teorijah javnega mnenja
Slavko Splichal, 2007, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper discusses the conceptual heterogeneity in the field of 'public opinion' in the light of a distinction between positions that reflect public opinion as a democratic-emancipatory category and positions that consider public opinion from an 'anthropological' perspective - as an semi-institutional resource of social control. The paper discusses the main characteristics and implications of these two different perspectives in conceptualizing public opinion, primarily the questions of the differences between publicly expressed opinions and public opinion, subject/ivity of public opinion (public opinions vs. opinion of the public), and the controversial relation of public opinion to democracy and surveillance. The argument is made that in the two centuries following Bentham's and Kant's codification of the principle of publicity, none of the fundamental controversies has been resolved. Although the belief that the establishment of a public opinion polling industry homogenized and stablized the definition of public opinion is widely accepted by pollsters, the facts rather prove the contrary: despite the enormous quantities of money and attention devoted to public opinion polling, there are few theoretical perspectives to guide research on the role of public opinion in the political process, which is primarily a consequence of the fact that consistent and operationally valid definitions of the concept 'public opinion' are still missing. There are no signs of 'reconciliation' between normative-theoretical and empirical-statistical perspectives; on the contrary, it seems that Wilson was right when 45 years ago he stated that the differences between those who 'believe in scientific study alone' and those who see in the study of public opinion a possibility of advancement of rational and humane goals can hardly disappear
