Satisfaction with knowledge and competencies

Opis: Problem statement: This study critically discusses findings from a research project involving four European countries. The project had two main aims. The first was to develop a systematic procedure for assessing the balance between knowledge and competencies acquired in higher, further and vocational education and the specific needs of the labor market. The second aim was to develop and test a set of meta-level quality indicators aimed at evaluating the linkages between education and employment. The project was designed to address the lack of employer input concerning the requirements of business graduates for successful workplace performance and the need for more specific industry-driven feedback to guide administrative heads at universities and personnel at quality assurance agencies in curriculum development and revision. Approach: The project was distinctive in that it combined different partners from higher education, vocational training, industry and quality assurance. Project partners designed and implemented an innovative approach, based on literature review, qualitative interviews and surveys in the four countries, in order to identify and confirm key knowledge and competency requirements. This study presents this step-by-step approach, as well as survey findings from a sample of 900 business graduates and employers. In addition, it introduces two Partial Least Squares (PLS) path models for predicting satisfaction with work performance and satisfaction with business education. Results: Survey findings revealed that employers were not very confident regarding business graduates' abilities in key knowledge areas and in key generic competencies. In subsequent analysis, these graduate abilities were tested and identified as important predictors of employersʼ satisfaction with graduates' work performance. Conclusion: The industry-driven approach introduced in this study can serve as a guide to assist different types of educational institutions to better align study programs with changing labor market requirements. Recommendations for curriculum improvement are discussed.

Student work and academic performance

Opis: By taking on occasional temporary jobs, students may gain valuable experience that might enhance their future opportunities in the labour market. On the other hand, the preferential tax treatment of their earnings gives them more an incentive to work than to study and therefore to delay their graduation in order to keep the valuable "student status" for as long as possible. This article provides statistical tests of the hypothesis that student work increases drop-outs and thus delays the time to graduation. We use a rich sample of individual-level data, provided by one of the several student employment services and including information on students' time devoted to work, type of their activity and their academic performance in terms of fulfilling all the requirements for regular progression to successive years of study. The results reveal some evidence for this hypothesis, but it is not as clear-cut as expected. Moreover, there is also some evidence that student work does provide valuable experience for some students.

Flexible but segmentes labour markets

Opis: The article is the first analysis of student work in Slovenia based on a sample of individual-level data rather than a survey. The first part presents aggregated data on the extent and cost of student work, comparing them to relevant labour market aggregates and considering the competitiveness of students in the labour market. The second part provides statistical tests of the common assumption that working students, due to their preferential tax and regulatory treatment, crowd out some other groups of job seekers from the labour market. It is shown that student work has a statistically significant and quantitatively non-negligible positive impact on the rate of youth unemployment (under the age of 30), especially on the unskilled segment. However, there is no evidence on its impact on the unemployment of young graduates.
