Apostolski vizitator Agostino Valier - pobudnik obnove kompleksa cerkve Sv. Jurija v Piranu : interpretacija historičnih virov kot izhodišče konservatorskih raziskav
Mojca M. Kovač, 2007, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The article focuses on the review of archival sources, historical representations and interpretation of conservational research during the course of restoration works on the church of St. George and takes into consideration material remains and finds from this monument as a starting point of its presentation. Representation of the Gothic church building in its original state represents a reference point for determination of subsequent changes performed during restoration. The decision to renovate the old Gothic church, which was in ruins, was a demanding and responsible undertaking for the Church and Municipal authorities, because it demanded substantial financial resources. Two basic options emerged: to renovate the existing church or to build a new one. The initiative for the renovation of the minster in Piran was a visitation of the Veronese bishop Agostino Valiero in 1580, ordered by the Pope Gregory XIII. On the basis of the preserved visitation report, we were able to recognize the endeavours and personal engagement of bishop Valier, who took his task as an opportunity to resolve the dilemmas regarding the renovation of the church in Piran. Through his role as a dignitary of the Church he strived to unite Church and Municipal authorities and ensure financial resources while paying regard to expert architect opinions. The visitation report provides detailed description of the original state of the Gothic church and its furnishings and thus represents a remarkable document of great importance for research of architectural history of the church. The final decision to start renovating the church, elaboration of plans and gathering funds were important issues during the entire decade that followed even though the basic guidelines were set in 1580. The renovation of the church was closely associated with the consolidation of the access path and the slope of the hill the church was built on and included thorough changes of the original medieval church structure. The result of renovation works on the church of St. George are two new buildings: the baptistery of St. John the Baptist, erected as a presbyterial part of the church and a separate bell tower. The question remains whether we can consider this renovation as a construction of a new church. It is to be answered by further research of the course of building works.

Zbirka "Pietro Nobile" Državnog arhiva u Rijeci kao izvor za proučavanje izgleda istarskih naselja početkom XIX. stoljeća
Marijan Bradanović, 2007, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This article contains an analysis of a collection of drawings representing motifs from Istria. They were drawn by the renowned architect Pietro Nobile from Trieste and are kept in the National Archives in Rijeka. The history of the collection is described - it had been discovered, bought and catalogued between the Two Wars by Camillo De Franceschi, a historian, librarian and archivist from Pula. After World War II the collection has been kept in the National Archives in Rijeka. The collection consists of 79 drawings of vistas and landscapes and three portraits. It was dated on the grounds of a contemporary inscription from the year 1815 on the portrait of canon Valčić from Brseč, yet some of the drawings were certainly created somewhat earlier. The drawings are marked by their sketchy and explicitly realistic manner, and differ from their contemporary depictions of Istrian towns, where realistic qualities were lost during subsequent treatment. Previously unknown details of the urban scheme of Istrian towns are described, which have been lost in the intervening period, including some, for which these drawings represent the only illustration. Like his predecessors Nobile too is primarily interested in documenting monuments from the Antiquity, yet his work exhibits a broader interest in antiques, an anticipation of the forthcoming period of Romanticism. Among the numerous vistas from Pula, providing a more precise set of information than any other source known so far, there is an outstanding depiction of the exterior side of the Golden Gate with a segment of the city walls and a tower in the northern direction. The vistas from Rovinj, including drawings of a part of the front façade of the St. Euphemia parish, a pedestal with side columns and the remains of the harbour quarantine on the Rovinj waterfront are of special interest. The drawing of the main town squarein Koper, including a detail of the façade of the Armeria building and one of the original front façade of the church of St. Peter in Piran are noteworthy as well. Among the motifs from Poreč the forum temple stands out and an illustration of its back façade with Medieval walls in the elevation isconsidered to be a rarity. Vistas from rarely depicted towns represent an even more valuable source of information, especially the drawing with a fortified causeway in front of the inner town walls of Umag and the drawings of the main entrance to Labin and Tinjan depicting a tower with a passage, erected over the main city entrance. The towns Bale, Plomin, Motovun, Svetvinčenat and the castels in Payin and Lupoglav have been found to remain virtually unchanged. The veracity of depictions is proven by a parallel survey of available graphic art material and through field research. Apart from possessing great artistic value this collection represents one of the most comprehensive graphic art sources of information concerning old Istrian towns from the first half of the 19th century. Despite this fact it has only received modest attention of researchers, so let this be a reminder and an appeal for further comparative analysis of the drawings and evaluation of architectural and conservational endeavours of Pietro Nobile in Istria

Arhitektura in razvoj obeh koprskih obzidij
Darko Likar, 2009, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Koper is one of the fortified northern Mediterranean coastal towns boasting continuous settlement since pre-antiquity. With the general public being only partially interested in the remnants of the two town walls and in the issues related to the past, our fieldwork has revealed only scarce information about their material existence. Architectural knowledge of ancient construction techniques, meticulous study and verification of archival sources and of the in situ condition has convinced us that the existence of the two town walls in Koper is worth thorough research. The application of new architectural and conservation sensorial methods (Likar, 1995) to the reconstruction of the Koper town walls has produced good results. The results gained through several years of research have induced us to formulate the hypothesis that the majority of the outer town wall is still preserved in various forms, with the exception of those parts where recent development has thoroughly transformed its foundations. A similar hypothesis could be proposed for the inner town wall, which however is inaccessible to researchers owing to ownership-related issues. Recently, numerous construction projects carried out in the old town core have confirmed our hypothesis on the presumed layout of the outer town wall. The key results of our research are the architectural reconstruction of both town walls and the presentation of their development through individual historical periods. The newly discovered elements and the reconstruction of the two town walls give new significance and value to the town. The new results gained through the investigation of the two town walls believed to be dilapidated offer Koper completely new development opportunities. The article presents the results of the research on the architecture of the Koper town walls together with relevant evidence and the reconstruction of their development through various historical periods.
