Evidence of a complex phylogeographic structure in the common dormouse, Muscardinus avellanarius (Rodentia, Gliridae)

Opis: This is the first mitochondrial phylogeography of the common dormouse, Muscardinus avellanarius (Linnaeus, 1758), a hibernating rodent strictly protected in Europe (Habitat Directive, annex IV; Bern Convention, annex III).The 84 individuals of M. avellanarius, sampled throughout the distributional range of the species, have been sequenced at the mitochondrial DNA gene (cytochrome b, 704 base pairs). The results revealed two highly divergent lineages, with an ancient separation around 7.7 Mya and a genetic divergence of 7.7%. Lineage 1 occurs in Western Europe (France, Belgium, and Switzerland) and Italy, and lineage 2 occurs in Central-Northern Europe (Poland, Germany, Latvia, and Lithuania), on the Balkan Peninsula, and in Turkey. Furthermore, these two lineages are subdivided into five sublineages genetically isolated with a strong geographical association. Therefore, lineage 1 branches into two further sublineages (Western European and Italian), whereas lineage 2 contained three sublineages (Central-Northern European, Turkish, and Balkan). We observed low genetic diversity within the sublineages, in contrast to the significant level of genetic differentiation between them. The understanding of genetic population structure is essential for identifying units to be conserved. Therefore, these results may have important implications for M. avellanarius conservation

Prioritizing fishery management for loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) conservation in the northern Adriatic Sea from reproductive value analysis
Bojan Lazar, Selina S. Heppell, 2009, objavljeni povzetek strokovnega prispevka na konferenci

Opis: Fisheries bycatch often affects particular size classes of turtles. Because of the late age at maturity, the reproductive value (RV) of small juvenile, large juvenile and adult loggerheads vary by orders of magnitude. RV provides a relative measure of value for individuals, thereby allowing us to estimate the effects of different stressors based on the number of animals killed. Using RV as a comparative index, we assessed the relative impact of trawl and gillnet fi sheries operating in the northern Adriatic Sea on loggerhead populations. We tested several scenarios for bycatch in both fi sheries which signifi cantly differs in the size of captured animals and mortality. Despite high bycatch rates, bottom trawl fi sheries result in direct death of fewer loggerheads (156-260 vs. 346-486 in gill nets), but affect individuals that are older and hence have higher RVs. Because of data limitations for vital rates and bycatch estimates, we looked at a distribution of potential impact for each fi shery. Lessons learned include the need for relative impact assessment because of the sensitivity of adult RV to parameters such as clutch frequency, sex ratio and remigration interval. We anticipate that our analysis will help managers prioritize needs for regulation and mitigation among different fi sheries.

Population genetics of chamois in the contact zone between the Alps and the Dinaric Mountains
Elena Bužan, Josef Bryja, Barbora Zemanová, Boris Kryštufek, 2013, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The chamois is a habitat specialist ungulate occupying continental archipelagos of fragmented rocky habitats which are frequently restricted to high altitudes. It is not clear whether forest habitats separating such population fragments act as barriers to gene flow. We studied the genetic makeup of the chamois in a topographically diverse landscape at the contact zone of two mountain ranges in Slovenia. Based on sequences of mitochondrial DNA, all Slovenian populations belong to a Northern chamois (Rupicapra r. rupicapra) subspecies. The range of chamois in Slovenia encompasses three different regions, each with unique topography, habitat connectivity and abundance of chamois: the Alps, the Dinaric Mts., and the Pohorje Mts. The habitat of the chamois is extensive and more or less continuous in the Alps, but suboptimal and fragmented in the remaining regions. In agreement with neutral genetic theory, large Northern chamois populations tended to have higher allelic richness and observed heterozygosity. Spatial clustering bears the differentiation into four geographically associated clusters within Slovenia and also revealed a strong substructure within all mountain ranges with suboptimal chamois habitat. Surprisingly, some small Dinaric populations have stayed genetically isolated in restricted habitat patches, even if they are geographically very close to each other. The four clusters, each having a unique demographic history, should be regarded as independent units for management purposes.

Microsatellite markers confirm extensive population fragmentation of the endangered Balkan palaeoendemic Martino's vole (Dinaromys bogdanovi)
Elena Bužan, Boris Kryštufek, Josef Bryja, 2010, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The Martino's vole is an endangered rodent endemic to the western Balkan Peninsula. Its range is fragmented, and populations are small due to high habitat specificity. The level of genetic variation within such populations is often low, and genetic differentiation between patchily dispersed populations is high. By scoring eight microsatellite loci in 110 individual Martino's voles originating from 27 locations throughout the species range, we analysed genetic variation at both the intra- and interpopulation level. Factorial correspondence analysis, Bayesian analyses, and allele sharing distances divided individuals into three phylogroups (Northwestern, Central, and Southeastern), thus providing independent support for phylogeographic structuring, a pattern that has been described in previous studies based on mitochondrial DNA. Spatial genetic analyses showed that populations are highly fragmented, even in those areas with the highest population densities. The highest intrapopulation genetic variability and stable effective population sizes were found in Mount Zelengora (Bosnia and Herzegovina), which harbours a relatively large population of Martino's voles. Populations in the Central and Southeastern lineages exhibited a significant isolation-by-distance pattern, indicating limited gene flow between them. Contrary to previous opinion, low effective population size and very limited gene flow between remaining populations suggest that the long-term existence of the Martino's vole might not be secure, even in populations that live in optimal habitats. The only threat to the Martino's vole identified thus far is competitive exclusion by the European snow vole. However, our results suggest that conservation problems associated with this paleoendemic rodent are more complex

Distribution and conservation of Batrachofauna and Herpetofauna of the Zrmanja River catchment area
Boris Lauš, Dušan Jelić, Ivona Burić, Ana Kolarić, Toni Koren, 2012, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Over the four year period (20072010), the authors conducted a field study aimed at drawing up an inventory of batrachofauna and herpetofauna of the Zrmanja river catchment area. Eight species of amphibians and twenty one species of reptiles were detected; through the available literature overview two more reptilian and one amphibian species were added to the list. Therefore, we proved the presence of thirty two species in total. High diversity of amphibians and reptiles indicates great significance of this area and imposes the need to ensure survival of these species through long-term populations monitoring and conservation measures
