Abstract:Osteoporoza ponavadi pride brez opozorila in je ena najpogostejših, a najmanj prepoznanih bolezni Evropske skupnosti, čeprav v svetu in tudi pri nas že dobiva razsežnosti epidemije. Statistika kaže, da si bo do svojega 80. leta starosti zaradi neprepoznane in nezdravljene bolezni kost zlomila vsaka tretja ženska in vsak sedmi moški.

Abstract:Osteoporosis usually comes without prior warning and is one of the most frequent, yet least recognisable diseases in the Europen Union, although worldwide - and also in Slovenia - it is already reaching the extent of an epidemic. Statistics indicate that, on accaount of this unrecognised and untreated disease, by the age of 80 every third woman and every seventh man will suffer from a bone fracture. The disease causes difficulties not only forthe patient, but also for the state treasury, since in the coming fifty years with the increasing ageing of the population, the cost of treatment of the disease - if active preventive measures are not taken - will be imensly increased. For the year 2000, the Wiorld Health Organisation (WHO) establishedthat the cost of treating osteoporosis fractures in the European Union had amounted to 30 billion euros, and that this sum will already have doubled by the year 2020. (1) There are, therefore, numerous reasons why we inSlovenia should also be concerned for the health of individuals through systematic and co-ordinated action involving health institutions, governement authorities and patients' societies. With regard to co-operation, we are also involved at the Europen Union level with the framework of the Advisory and Interest Groups, which operate under the auspicies of the Europen Parliament. At the Slovene Osteoporosis Patients Society we are convinced of the need for co-operation and partnership between healthcare pprofessionals and the state in caring for the health and quality of life of osteoporosis patients, and also involving those belonging to all generations who wish to do something fortheir own health and to defend themselves against osteoporosis and its cobsequences. Only in this way can our work be successful.
