Title:"Active learning" - a higher level of knowledge?
Abstract:In the last two decades the popularity of science, including physics, has been decreasing in most countries and, consequently, so has been the number of college science majors. At all levels of the learning process different approaches have been proposed in order to stop this trend. It seems that some have been successful. Here we would like to present the reintroduction of the so called "active" (or "inquiry based") teaching and learning where students gain knowledge by using a research-like approach. In physics (and other fields of science) this is often tied to experimental and lab work which creates an "investigative science learning environment", giving a strong motivational factor that enables students to get a better mastery of the body of knowledge and a deeper understanding of basic concepts. At the same time students develop a scientific way of thinking which helps them to successfully deal with new situations and problems. In this presentation we will discuss a few examples of active learning in the area of physics which concern both the experimentally based and the "theoretical" investigative learning. We will also demonstrate the value of the active learning practice in the classroom for the students/future teachers of sciences.
