Background: Families of choice are formed by LGBTQ+ individuals through chosen bonds rather than bio-legal ties, fulfilling needs unmet by families of origin. Although international research has explored their functions across various contexts, this topic has not yet been empirically investigated in Slovenia. Method: A qualitative method based on grounded theory was used. Data triangulation combined semistructured interviews and self-reflective memoirs. Twenty-five LGBTQ+individuals in Slovenia participated. All data were analyzed according to the principles of grounded theory. Results: The findings encompass LGBTQ+ individuals’ perspectives on the meanings and definitions of families of choice, the processes of their creation and maintenance, the barriers they face, and their overall significance for LGBTQ+individuals. Conclusion and Implications: Families of choice require systematic support to form and thrive—for example, through inclusive education, safe public spaces such as LGBTQ+ organizations, and legal recognition to enable them to function fully as families. The term families of choice is preferable to chosen families because “choice” extends beyond the initial act of selection. Their role is expected to become increasingly vital amid the rise of anti-gender movements.</dc:description><dc:date>2026</dc:date><dc:date>2026-07-09 10:04:23</dc:date><dc:type>Neznano</dc:type><dc:identifier>23288</dc:identifier><dc:identifier>UDK: 316.362.34(497.4)</dc:identifier><dc:identifier>ISSN pri članku: 1741-3729</dc:identifier><dc:identifier>DOI: 10.1111/fare.70246</dc:identifier><dc:identifier>COBISS.SI-ID: 284154883</dc:identifier><dc:language>sl</dc:language></metadata>
