Mapping the Landscape : A Literature Review on Circular Economy Adoption

Abstract: The circular economy (CE) has emerged as a strategic framework to decouple economic growth from environmental degradation through resource efficiency, waste reduction, and closed-loop systems. The current study uniquely integrates the PRISMA protocol with the 5W1H analytical framework and bibliometric triangulation to bridge conceptual, behavioural, and policy perspectives within CE research. This study conducts a systematic literature review of 332 peer-reviewed articles from Scopus and Web of Science, applying the PRISMA methodology and the 5W1Hb analytical framework. Bibliometric and thematic analyses reveal five core research themes: technological innovation, circular business models, policy mechanisms, behavioural insights, and supply chain optimisation. While the United Kingdom and India lead in scholarly and policy contributions,the CE research landscape remains fragmented. Key gaps persist in digital nudging, behavioural adoption, and sector-specific applications. The study emphasises the need for interdisciplinary approaches and model-driven frameworks to foster systemic CE transitions. By mapping conceptual trends, theoretical linkages, and regional participation, this study provides a novel integrative synthesis and actionable implications for policymakers, researchers, and practitioners seeking to accelerate CE adoption.

Corporate social responsibility practices, managerial attitudes toward artificial intelligence, and AI adoption in micro and small restaurant SMEs

Abstract: In hospitality SMEs, digital transformation is increasingly linked to sustainability goals. However, evidence on how corporate social responsibility (CSR) relates to the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in owner-managed firms remains limited. This study ex- amines CSR practices, managerial attitudes toward AI, and AI adoption in micro and small restaurant SMEs in a small European Union (EU) economy. Using survey data from 157 Slovenian restaurant SMEs and structural equation modelling, CSR is conceptualised as an enacted, practice-based orientation. At the same time, managerial attitudes toward AI are modelled as the key mechanism preceding adoption. Results reveal an asymmet- ric relationship between CSR and AI. Employee-related CSR practices, which are mainly institutionalised, do not significantly influence managerial AI attitudes. In contrast, en- vironmental CSR practices are negatively associated with AI attitudes, indicating more cautious evaluations among environmentally responsible managers. Managerial attitudes toward AI are positively and significantly associated with AI adoption, confirming their central role in adoption decisions. Financial performance, measured by objective revenue data, does not emerge as a direct outcome of AI adoption but rather operates as a contex- tual condition shaping how CSR practices relate to managerial attitudes and how those attitudes translate into adoption decisions. Overall, the findings indicate that CSR does not uniformly translate into managerial attitudes toward AI and subsequent AI adoption in restaurant SMEs.

AI Adoption in European Enterprises

Abstract: This paper examines the data on AI adoption in European companies by analysing how different indicators of digital readiness, technological infrastructure and organisational capacity contribute to the successful integration of AI. The study analyses data from 31 European countries and uses fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) to identify three different pathways to AI adoption: digital maturity (a combination of high digital intensity, internet access and ICT security), technology-based readiness (based on in-house data analytics, cloud computing and ICT specialists) and capability-based empowerment (through ICT training alongside ICT staff and ICT security). The results show that multiple configurations can lead to effective AI adoption, underlining the principle of equivalence. The findings underscore the important role of ICT security across all pathways and suggest that workforce development is able to compensate for infrastructural gaps. Some practical guidance for businesses and policy makers are also provided.

Exploring the drivers of farm sustained participation in agri‑environmental programmes

Abstract: This paper examines the socioeconomic and institutional determinants influencing sustained participation in Agri-Environmental Climate Schemes (AECS), drawing on comprehensive panel data from Slovenian farms covering the period 2014–2021. Using discrete-time hazard models and nonparametric duration analysis, we identify economic resilience—characterised by larger farm size, income diversification, and prior participation—as a significant driver of prolonged AECS engagement. Conversely, greater dependence on market-based income is negatively correlated with long-term participation, highlighting inherent trade-offs between short-term economic gains and sustained ecological commitments. Additionally, educational attainment exhibits a modest yet positive association, emphasising the importance of knowledge dissemination and capacity building in facilitating the responsible use and sustained environmental protection. Our findings underscore the necessity for context-specific policy designs, advocating diversified financial incentives, robust extension services, and market-aligned strategies to effectively integrate agricultural productivity with environmental sustainability.

What drives eco-innovation? : A review of an emerging literature

Abstract: tThis paper provides an overview of the emerging literature on the drivers of eco-innovation.Its main contribution lies in separating the drivers associated with the phases of develop-ment and diffusion and in identifying particular drivers based on different eco-innovationtypes. We find that research in this area primarily adopts the resource-based and institu-tional theories as its theoretical foundations and that the prevailing effects identified arethose of regulations and market pull factors. Moreover, product eco-innovation, processeco-innovation, organizational eco-innovation, and environmental R&D investments seemto be driven by common drivers, such as regulations, market pull factors, EMS, and cost sav-ings, as well as to be positively associated with company size. The majority of the studiesin our literature review employ a quantitative research methodology and focus on the dif-fusion stage of eco-innovation. We end with providing a synthesis of drivers of companies%eco-innovation and directions for future research.
