Progress feedback for countering selective exposure : when visualization can backfire

Abstract: Selective exposure in online news is often attributed to person- alization mechanisms and user modeling. Recent work proposes interface-level interventions that visualize reading balance or frame cross-cutting exposure as progress. However, we lack empirical evidence on whether alternative representations of user-model feedback meaningfully influence engagement with belief-opposing content. We conducted a between-subject experiment (N = 84) in a controlled news environment comparing two representations of diversity feedback: (1) an analytic bias visualization summarizing viewpoint balance and (2) a metaphorical growth visualization fram- ing cross-cutting exposure as personal development. Across behav- ioral and attitudinal measures of open-minded engagement, neither feedback representation increased engagement relative to control, and the two designs did not differ reliably. Our results suggest that lightweight representations of diversity signals—without adaptive personalization or structural changes to recommendations—may be insufficient to alter selective exposure in single-session settings. We discuss implications for designing user-model feedback and depolarization objectives in recommender systems.

Game on for news : stance-aware gamification in a news aggregator to promote engagement with diverse viewpoints

Abstract: Personalized news systems often adapt ranking to user preferences, which can reinforce selective exposure. We investigate an alterna- tive personalization strategy: stance-aware incentive shaping. In- stead of modifying content ranking, we use a minimal per-topic stance user model to adapt reward gradients, awarding more points for engaging with counter-attitudinal content. In a between-subject experiment (� = 98), we compare a non- adaptive baseline with two adaptive incentive framings (levels vs. leaderboards). Stance-aware gamification increased behavioral en- gagement (clicks and time), while subjective engagement and com- prehension did not differ reliably. Only the level-based framing produced significant pre–post increases in stance change and open- minded thinking, with effects varying by topic. We position stance-aware incentive shaping as a lightweight user-model intervention that adapts motivational feedback rather than ranking, offering an alternative pathway for diversity-aware personalization in recommender systems.

Information systems compatibility in M&A pre-combination phase

Abstract: This paper addresses the strategic importance of information systems (IS) compatibility and complementarity in evaluating organizational fit during the pre- combination (pre-merger) phase of mergers and acquisitions (M&As). Drawing on the author’s doctoral research and updated literature, the study develops a refined conceptual framework (underpinning the IS-OFAM model) that integrates IS alignment with strategic, cultural, and operational fit dimensions. Through grounded theory–based analysis of two case studies—one in financial services and one in food processing—the paper identifies patterns of IS oversight, cultural-technical misalignment, and underleveraged IS assets. Findings show that IS compatibility often goes unassessed, while IS complementarity is undervalued as a source of post- merger innovation. The proposed IS-Organizational Fit Alignment Model (IS-OFAM) provides this conceptual framework by embedding IS assessments into early-stage due diligence and planning. The research contributes to M&A theory and practice by linking business information systems to pre-combination diagnostics and integration strategy.

Enhancing crisis response efficiency through ICT : a Delphi study on operational and decision-making improvements in mass casualty incidents

Abstract: The potential of information and communication technology (ICT) to improve coordination and decision-making during the training and operational phases of mass casualty incidents (MCIs) has not yet been sufficiently explored. This three-round Delphi study investigates whether ICT use in MCIs can enhance decision-making and increase victim survival rates. The study was conducted from 10 February to 20 September 2024, with 25 international experts from academia, clinical practice, and health informatics. The results were summarised using a SWOT analysis, confirming ICT's perceived potential in MCI management. The analysis revealed a critical asymmetry: while the strengths and opportunities were mainly associated with technical factors (e.g. the effectiveness of drones, global positioning systems, artificial intelligence, dashboards, and virtual and augmented reality to improve the cost-effectiveness of training), weaknesses and threats were mainly social and organisational. These included a lack of standardisation and interoperability, limited ICT-supported training, infrastructure and cybersecurity gaps, resistance to change, legal constraints, underfunding, low technological readiness, and scepticism about the cost-effectiveness of ICT in real-world MCI contexts. Our findings highlight the gap between technological readiness and implementation challenges, suggesting that ICT innovation alone is insufficient without supportive governance, infrastructure, and stakeholder engagement. As the first Delphi study of its kind, it provides a strategic foundation for evidence-based ICT integration in training and operational MCI responses. The findings provide clear priorities for future policy development and empirical validation, emphasising the need to address persistent non-technical barriers to realise ICT’s full potential in crisis management.
