What do listeners attend to when listening to music? : Toward explainable music recommendations

Abstract: Personalized explanations in recommender systems can be useful when they reflect the aspects of an item that matter to the user. To account for individual preferences regarding different aspects of songs in music recommender systems, it is first necessary to identify which song aspects explain meaningful variation among listeners. This paper introduces a questionnaire instrument designed to operationalize these differences as a measurable user characteristic. The instrument was developed through item generation, expert review, pilot testing, and a main study. Data from the main study (� = 245) were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis to examine the questionnaire’s internal structure. The results supported a two-factor solution, interpreted as Lyric- Engagement and Music-Engagement, with both dimensions showing good internal consistency. These findings suggest that listeners’ orientations toward lyrical and musical elements can be measured in an interpretable way. The contribution of this study lies not in proposing a new explanation algorithm, but in providing an empirical basis for user modeling that may help align explanation content with the song characteristics most relevant to different listeners.

Designing the ideal political identity questionnaire using machine learning and ideology scales

Abstract: Political ideology shapes beliefs, behavior and attitudes toward society. Many existing questionnaires for measuring ideology are lengthy, repetitive, and misaligned with self-perception. This paper investigates whether a shorter, reliable, two-dimensional political identity questionnaire can be created using machine learning and psychometric methods. Sixty participants completed four ideological instruments (MFQ, SDO, RWA and 8values). Lasso regression and Random Forest with nested cross-validation identified predictive items, while psychometric evaluation included CFA and Cronbach’s alpha. Random Forest outperformed Lasso. Internal reliability was excellent and factor loadings supported a two-factor structure despite moderate model it. Findings show that ideology can be measured efficiently with reduced items, supporting applications in research, digital platforms and political psychology.

Translation of Situation Awareness Rating Technique Questionnaire in Slovenian

Abstract: The Situational Awareness Rating Technique (SART) is a questionnaire designed to assess situational awareness when operating a machine. It consists of ten questions corresponding to ten dimensions that can be used to assess an operatorǯs situational awareness when interacting with and operating a machine. Although initially developed for assessment situational awareness of pilots, with the rising complexity of vehicles and introduction of automation, its use has spread significantly in automotive domain in the past decade. In this paper, we present the Slovenian version of the original questionnaire and the process of its development. For the translation of the questionnaire SART into Slovenian, the standard procedures for the translation of research instruments were applied: translation, coordination, back-translation into the source language, comparison of the back-translation with the source text and final coordination. Lastly, it was validated against a reference system in a driving-based environment.

A systematic review and evaluation of measurement instruments assessing the needs, wellbeing, and living environments of older adults

Abstract: Understanding the built environment’s impact on older adults’ wellbeing necessitates the identification of high-quality measures that capture environmental properties, wellbeing, and needs. Literature searches were conducted to identify instruments that measure (a) objective environmental properties, (b) wellbeing, (c) needs, and (d) environmental perception, which were evaluated using the COSMIN checklist. Another literature search was conducted to explore which instruments are used in studies examining objective and perceived qualities of the environment in relation to wellbeing. Of the 54 instruments evaluated, most showed strong content or construct validity, but weak or unreported test-retest reliability. Structural validity and internal consistency tended to be satisfactory in instruments assessing wellbeing and the intersection of environment and wellbeing. Instruments evaluating needs and the perceived environment generally had poor results in our evaluation. Our review of studies assessing both perceived and objective built environments alongside wellbeing indicates a lack of consistent use of validated instruments for older adult populations. We have identified instruments in each category with mostly sufficient psychometric properties, while the rest require improvement, particularly in terms of structural validity and reliability. Environment evaluation instruments mainly focus on outdoor spaces, leaving indoor spaces underrepresented in literature.
