Chemical and bioactivity profiling of extractives from tropical wood residues : Ipe, Merbau, and Jatoba
Amina Selmanović, Wojciech Pajerski, Kamil Drożdż, Monika Brzychczy-Wloch, Andreja Kutnar, Rene Alexander Herrera Diaz, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Wood residues and by-products from the furniture industry represent an underutilized resource with strong potential for integration into circular economy strategies. Extractives derived from these materials are rich in bioactive compounds, making them attractive candidates for bio-based product development. Although the functional properties of wood extractives are well recognized, their systematic recovery and characterization remain insufficiently explored in the context of green chemistry and sustainability. This study investigated the chemical composition and bioactivity of extractives obtained from industrial residues of three tropical hardwoods: Ipe (Handroanthus spp.), Merbau (Intsia spp.), and Jatoba (Hymenaea courbaril). Extractives were obtained via Pressurized Solvent Extraction (PSE) and characterized using gas chromatography (GC-FID and GC-MS). Ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) was subsequently applied for bioactivity evaluation. Green metrics, including the simple E-factor (sEF) and unit energy (UEC), were calculated to assess basic environmental efficiency. Gravimetric results showed a predominance of hydrophilic fractions (up to 97 % in Merbau), with major constituents including phenolics, fatty acids, flavonoids, and resin acids. Merbau and Jatoba extracts exhibited strong antioxidant capacity (IC50 < 75 μg/mL), while preliminary antimicrobial screening indicated selective activity of Merbau and Ipe against Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis, with Ipe also inhibiting Streptococcus pyogenes. These findings highlight tropical wood residues as renewable sources of bioactive compounds and support their valorisation in sustainable bio-based applications.

Digital competencies of future teachers
Milena Ivanuš-Grmek, Sabina Ograjšek, Monika Mithans, 2025, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Opis: The present article deals with the importance of digital competencies of future teachers, highlighting the role of ICT in education. The research was conducted on a convenience sample of 328 students of the Faculty of Education, University of Maribor, in the academic year 2023/2024. The data was obtained through an online questionnaire. The results show that students feel most confident performing basic digital tasks such as searching for information on social media and using digital calendars. However, they feel less confident performing advanced tasks such as web design and using licences. Overall, students of elementary education feel more competent than students of preschool education. The findings of the research highlight the necessity of enhancing digital literacy by providing further education and training for future teachers across all levels and disciplines. Only through such initiatives can the full potential of contemporary technology in education be achieved.

Reversible complement cyclic codes over finite chain rings
Monika Dalal, Sucheta Dutt, Ranjeet Sehmi, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: In this paper, necessary and sufficient conditions for the reversibility of a cyclic code of arbitrary length over a finite commutative chain ring have been derived. MDS reversible cyclic codes having length ps over a finite chain ring with nilpotency index 2 have been characterized and a few examples of MDS reversible cyclic codes have been presented. Further, it is shown that the torsion codes of a reversible cyclic code over a finite chain ring are reversible. Also, an example of a non-reversible cyclic code for which all its torsion codes are reversible has been presented to show that the converse of this statement is not true. The cardinality and Hamming distance of a cyclic code over a finite commutative chain ring have also been determined.

On asymmetric colourings of graphs with bounded degrees and infinite motion
Florian Lehner, Monika Pilśniak, Marcin Stawiski, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: A vertex colouring of a graph is called asymmetric if the only automorphism which preserves it is the identity. Tucker conjectured that if every automorphism of a connected, locally finite graph moves infinitely many vertices, then there is an asymmetric colouring with 2 colours. This conjecture was recently confirmed by Babai, using the heavy machinery of the classification of finite simple groups. We make progress towards a purely combinatorial proof of this conjecture in the special case of graphs with bounded maximal degree. More precisely, using only elementary combinatorial methods, we prove that if every automorphism of a connected graph with maximal degree Δ moves infinitely many vertices, then there is an asymmetric colouring using O(\sqrt(Δ) log(Δ)) colours. This is the first improvement which does not depend on the classification of finite simple groups over the trivial bound of O(Δ).
