1. An extended pre-testing protocol in the lead-up to field studiesAnna K. Zinn, Danyelle Greene, Csilla Demeter, Sara Dolnicar, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: To establish whether interventions ultimately change behavior, they are best tested in the field. However, there is no clear consensus on how to pre-select such interventions. To address this, we propose an extended pre-testing protocol in the lead-up to field studies. This extended protocol combines different approaches by (1) distinguishing between (a) an intervention triggering the corresponding theoretical construct, (b) the construct being linked to behavioral intentions, (c) the intervention affecting behavioral intentions; and (2) accounting for emotional reactions to intervention materials. We illustrate the protocol in an online experiment (N = 636) focusing on the example behavior of opting out of daily hotel room cleans—a behavior which can help reduce the environmental footprint of tourism. The results illustrate the value of the extended pre-testing protocol in tourism and hospitality research and beyond. It increases understanding of underlying intervention mechanisms and ensures interventions are suitable for the field. Objavljeno v RUP: 04.02.2026; Ogledov: 156; Prenosov: 2

2. Enablers of successful employment outcomes for people with disabilitiesPaul Ikutegbe, Melanie Randle, Lynnaire Sheridan, Robert Gordon, Samuel Allingham, Alanna Connolly, Sara Dolnicar, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Successful employment outcomes are often beyond the reach of people with disabilities, but relatively little is known about the factors that best enable the achievement of this goal. Using survey data from 803 people with and without disabilities, we examine the association of eight factors with successful employment outcomes. Using regression tree analysis, five factors emerged as statistically significant predictors of successful employment outcomes for people with disabilities: corporate culture and climate, job characteristics, government support, employer attitudes, and societal attitudes. Key interrelationships between factors include: (1) government support linking with corporate culture and climate; and (2) job characteristics linking with corporate culture and climate. Findings are relevant to organisations and governments to inform policy and practice to improve employment outcomes for people with disabilities. 3. Identifying segment-specific barriers to ordering environmentally sustainable plant-based meat dishes in restaurantsDavid Fechner, Bettina Grün, Sara Dolnicar, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Eating less meat when dining out can help mitigate climate change. Plant-based meats can facilitate the transition to a more environmentally sustainable tourism sector. However, uptake of these products remains low. Building on the capability-opportunity-motivation behaviour model, this study identifies the main reasons for the general population of restaurant patrons to reject plant-based meats: they prefer meat and traditional vegetable dishes; they are concerned about not enjoying plant-based meat dishes; they perceive plant-based meat dishes as too expensive. Accounting for heterogeneity among diners leads to the identification of six distinct consumer segments, which differ in their reasons for not ordering plant-based meat dishes in restaurants. From these empirical insights, we derive recommendations for tourism professionals on how to entice specific consumer segments to order plant-based meat dishes and identify future avenues for research. 4. An enjoyment-focused social identity intervention to reduce buffet plate wasteAnna K. Zinn, Sarah MacInnes, Oscar Yuheng Zhu, Sara Dolnicar, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Buffets produce substantial plate waste, which is environmentally harmful and unnecessary. Dominant approaches of environmental beliefs messaging have limited effectiveness in reducing plate waste. We test a novel intervention in the form of a world map game which leverages enjoyment and social identity salience. In a 2 (map intervention vs no map intervention) × 2 (beliefs messaging vs no beliefs messaging) between-subjects design (N = 400) we used a virtual buffet scenario to measure plate waste intentions implicitly. The world map game significantly reduced the number of calories added to a virtual plate (implicit measure) and increased intentions to leave zero plate waste (explicit measure) for both participants and their children (as reported by parents). In contrast, beliefs messaging did not significantly affect these measures. In a second experiment (N = 400) we (1) replicated the effectiveness of the novel intervention; (2) confirmed underlying theoretical mechanisms (identity salience and beliefs) by assessing the effect of the interventions on theoretical constructs. Beliefs messaging showed a significant effect on plate waste intentions for participants but not for their children. The map intervention increased positive affect (feeling more entertained, enthusiastic, and inspired), whereas the beliefs messaging decreased positive affect and increased negative affect (feeling more upset, irritable, distressed, and ashamed). Our results suggest that identity salience can be a strong leverage point to reduce plate waste. Practically, we introduce a promising new plate waste intervention which has potential to be more effective than common messaging approaches and does not negatively affect emotions. 6. Environmental beliefs, childhood behavior or habits - which best explains adult pro-environmetal behavior on vacation?Sarah MacInnes, Bettina Grün, Sara Dolnicar, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Tourist behaviour contributes significantly to the industry’s environmental burden and, therefore, must change. However, currently dominant environmental belief-based theories of pro-environmental tourist behaviour fail to consistently generate successful behaviour change interventions. Childhood behaviour offers a promising alternative. If childhood behaviour leads to adult habits, childhood may represent a critical time for instilling pro-environmental tourist habits. Using self-report adult habit strength, environmental beliefs, and behaviour across adulthood and childhood, this study reveals that self-reported childhood behaviours are indeed positively associated with adult habits, and such habits explain 41 % of variance of general pro-environmental behaviour in adulthood vacations, compared to 3 % explained by environmental beliefs. For recycling, conserving water and energy, and reducing food waste, results are similar – substantially favouring habits over environmental beliefs. This study points to a potential new approach for tourism professionals to influence tourists’ pro-environmental behaviour – by building habits in childhood, and breaking or reinforcing them in adulthood. 7. EcoShower : estimating shower duration using non-intrusive multi-modal sensor data via LSTM and Gated Transformer modelsLukas Sablica, Bettina Grün, Siamak Layeghy, Sara Dolnicar, Marius Portmann, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: This paper tackles the challenge of accurately estimating shower duration from non-intrusive multi-modal sensor data to facilitate efficient water management. Efficient water usage is a critical environmental challenge, and showering contributes significantly to domestic water consumption. Developing accurate, accessible monitoring solutions is essential for promoting sustainability. Utilizing data from humidity, temperature, sound average, and sound peak sensors, we explore suitable data processing steps and the application of machine learning models to estimate shower duration. Our approach includes the design of a bidirectional Long Short- Term Memory model and the application of an existing Gated Transformer Network model to address the multivariate time series classification task. Our analysis reveals that both models are highly effective in this context, also compared to baseline models, and humidity emerges as a particularly powerful predictor either on its own or when combined with the temperature sensor. This work not only showcases the potential of using machine learning methods for multivariate time series classification in the domain of water consumption but also underscores the implications for adopting such technologies in promoting sustainable water use.
