2. Roma in the healthcare system : experiences of healthcare professionalsDebora Levstik Jašarevič, Andrej Kočevar, Daša Petrič, Mirko Prosen, Sabina Ličen, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Introduction. The Roma community faces numerous challenges in accessing health services, including language barriers, discrimination, low health literacy, and social exclusion. Aim. The aim of the research was to examine the experiences of health professionals in treating Roma patients, with a focus on communication, cultural differences, and access to health services. Special emphasis was also placed on the presence of antigypsyism in the healthcare system. Methods. The research was based on a qualitativedescriptive design. The sample included 15 healthcare workers with experience in treating Roma patients, primarily from the Dolenjska region. Data were collected through semi-structured individual interviews conducted between November and December 2024. The results were analyzed using thematic analysis. Results. Thematic analysis identified four themes: (1) Cultural characteristics of the Roma community, (2) Healthcare of Roma, (3) Interpersonal relationships between healthcare workers and Roma, (4) Communication with Roma. The results show that language barriers, low health literacy, and cultural differences are the main challenges in the treatment of Roma patients. Healthcare workers highlighted the use of “Roma helpers” – cultural mediators, communication adaptations, and educational workshops as successful strategies. Conclusion. The research highlights the importance of intercultural competences for improving healthcare for the Roma community. Healthcare professionals identified key strategies for addressing antigypsyism, such as patience, building trust, involving Roma cultural mediators, and organising targeted workshops. These strategies align with current guidelines, as they are based on respect, inclusion, and co-design of services with the Roma community. The findings can contribute to the development of tailored programmes that promote inclusion and reduce health inequalities. 3. Opportunities and challenges in reading literacy development in a digital context : preservice teachersSonja Rutar, Barbara Baloh, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The development of reading literacy in the contemporary context, characterised by the predominance of digital technology, poses a significant pedagogical challenge. In the Slovenian higher education system, future preschool and primary school teachers are educated at the Faculty of Education, which enables developmental continuity in pedagogical approaches from kindergarten to primary school. This article reports the findings of a study involving prospective preschool and primary school teachers who participated in projects designed to cultivate digital literacy to enhance teaching efficacy through the use of digital technology. The study employed a qualitative approach. In the first phase, students reflected on their individual trajectories of reading literacy development. In the second phase, participants considered the advantages and disadvantages of developing reading literacy through digital technology, drawing on their personal experiences of learning to read and of using digital tools in pedagogical contexts. 5. Generative AI and the Croatian Educational SystemSaša Mladenović, 2025, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji Opis: This chapter explores the transformative potential of Generative AI (GEN-AI) in education, focusing on its integration into the Croatian educational system. It examines the historical evolution of AI, the rapid emergence of GEN-AI tools, and their implications for teaching and learning. GEN-AI’s multimodal capabilities offer opportunities to enhance creativity, problem-solving, and personalised learning. However, challenges such as overreliance, transparency, and ethical considerations require special attention. Croatia has made significant efforts in addressing these challenges through initiatives like the BrAIn project, CARNET’s AI curriculum, and the Digital Croatia Strategy 2032, which emphasise AI literacy, teacher empowerment, and equitable access. Pedagogical approaches for teaching with and about GEN-AI are discussed, emphasising active learning, ethical awareness, and the importance of maintaining human oversight. This chapter advocates for a balanced, human-centric approach to integrating GEN-AI, ensuring its use aligns with educational values of creativity and intellectual growth while addressing the evolving demands of a digital future. Understanding students’ perceptions, usage behaviour and ethical concerns is crucial for the responsible and sustainable use of AI in the academic environment. The aim of this study was to explore the perceptions, experiences and challenges of health sciences students in relation to the use of generative AI in their academic learning. A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted with 397 students enrolled in four undergraduate health-related degree programmes in Slovenia, including nursing, physiotherapy, dietetics and applied kinesiology. The data was collected using a validated 27-point scale. Students were generally favourable towards AI, especially in terms of its perceived usefulness, integration into their daily study routine and ethical considerations. Regression analyses revealed that frequency of AI use, duration of use, self-reported skill level and confidence in using AI significantly predicted perceived usefulness. Gender differences were found, with male students reporting higher perceived usefulness and fewer concerns. Students recognised the potential of generative AI but emphasised the importance of ethical guidance, digital literacy and equal access. Institutions should prioritise structured training and inclusive strategies to ensure meaningful, sustainable and responsible integration of AI into health education.
