Agri-environmental schemes reduce variable input costs : evidence from Slovenian farms
Štefan Bojnec, Imre Fertő, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Agri-environmental schemes (AES) are central policy instruments designed to promote environmentally friendly agricultural practices by financially supporting the adoption of sustainable land management. While a substantial body of research examines how AES influence environmental outcomes and overall farm performance, far less is known about their direct effects on farm-level variable input costs, particularly in terms of energy, fertilizer, and crop protection expenditures. Existing studies typically analyse eco-efficiency or broad economic-environmental indicators, leaving a critical empirical gap regarding whether and how AES reshape the cost structure of farms during and after adoption. This study addresses this gap by estimating the causal impact of AES participation on key variable input costs using Slovenian Farm Accountancy Data Network data and a Differences-in-Differences (DID) design with staggered adoption, supported by robustness and sensitivity analyses. The findings indicate that AES participation leads to significant reductions in pesticide and energy costs, while fertilizer expenditures tend to increase in the short term before stabilizing or declining over time. These patterns suggest that AES trigger structural adjustments in production—such as reduced tillage intensity and transitions to organic or biological inputs—that can initially raise some input costs but contribute to longer-term sustainability. The study therefore offers new empirical evidence on the cost implications of AES, improving understanding of how environmental policy instruments affect farm-level economic decisions. These insights are essential for designing AES that support both environmental objectives and the economic viability of farmers, particularly in regions where sustainability transitions may involve short-term trade-offs.

The Sarajevo Period of Dane Škerl’s Artistic Activity
Fatima Hadžić, 2026, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Opis: Dane Škerl (Ljubljana, 1931–Bovec, 2002) was a Slovenian composer, conductor and professor. He graduated in Composition in 1952 from the Academy of Music, University of Ljubljana in the class of Lucijan Marija Škerjanc. Afterwards, Škerl headed for further specialisation to Austria and Germany, where he was active as a conductor and music teacher. From 1960 to 1970, he worked at the Academy of Music in Sarajevo as a professor, after which he returned to Slovenia, where he worked as a professor of composition at the Academy of Music in Ljubljana until his retirement in 1995. The paper strives to describe and contextualise the Škerl’s 10 years of activity in the cultural life of Sarajevo, with special reference to his activity as a composer in terms of the compositional technique and stylistic tendencies. Besides his pedagogical role, he was strongly involved in the social and cultural life of Sarajevo as a collaborator with Radio Sarajevo (serving as advisor, recording engineer, and conductor), a member of various juries, forums, and associations, and artistic councils – particularly with the Opera and the Sarajevo Philharmonic. During this period, Škerl composed over 20 works, mostly symphonic, concertante and vocal-instrumental. The genre diversity of the Škerl’s opus is emphasised through directing the focus of analytical attention to three compositions written in three different points of time, showing the evolution of his compositional style: Pet skladb [Five Pieces] for clarinet and string orchestra (1961), Symphony No. 2 (1963) and Bagatele [Bagatelles] for piano (1968), indicating the persistence of the Neoclassical orientation as a firm stylistic ground based on an evident adherence to a particular harmonic centre and thematic way of shaping the material, but also the emergence of expressionistic tendencies manifested through serialism. Although Škerl remained faithful to the “middle path” between the tendencies, it is important to consider the historical context: since neither Bosnian-Herzegovinian composers nor those from the other Yugoslav republics had strongly expressed contemporary, much less avant-garde tendencies at the time, during the Sarajevo artistic period Škerl demonstrated boldness by opening new perspectives in musical composition and contributing to the burgeoning trend of musical experimentation.

Recent Slovene Music and its Interpreters
Niall O’Loughlin, 2025, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Opis: A serious new music culture has been very strong in Slovenia, specially in the second half of the 20th century. The foundation for this has been very much enabled by the high-level skills and application of the performers, the interpreters of the music. This has encouraged the determination and enthusiasm of the composers, as well as the attention and participation of the audiences. Performers such as the violinist Igor Ozim, the pianist Aci Bertoncelj, the conductor Ivo Petrić and the Slovenska filharmonija and RTV Symphony Orchestra have been particularly notable in this process, giving a strong platform for new music. Vocal music at this time has been less prominent in new music by younger composers because performers seemed to be more involved in interpreting the older Lieder repertory. From the time of independence and into the 21st century, conditions have changed. All the signs were there that building on the achievements of the 20th century, there was a tremendous surge of enthusiasm for ensuring that a serious music culture was reinvigorated and growing. Solo instrumentalists and singers were trained to an even higher standard, making possible techniques and interpretative skills that were barely imagined earlier. Solo performers proliferated with particular contributions from violinists, cellists, clarinettists, flautists, brass players and pianists. Composers responded with large numbers of pieces that were performed at various platforms which included new music. While the adventurous ensemble music in the 20th century was mainly restricted to the work of the Slavko Osterc Ensemble, in the 21st century a number of new ensembles have been created with a corresponding increase in opportunities for composing music for these very skilled mostly young players. As earlier, a central role in encouraging the composition of new Slovene orchestral music has been the strong performing skills of the two professional orchestras in Ljubljana, especially in the orchestras’ concert seasons and in concerts of the Slovene Music Days. The attention to vocal and choral music has also developed very strongly among composers. Some opera singers who in the past have concentrated on the classics of the opera house have now been willing to attempt more difficult new locally composed operas. This has inevitably created a greater acceptance of new music in the opera house with composers producing new works, though this has been a very gradual process. Not only do older performers now pay attention to the 19th and 20th century ‘classics’ of Slovene music, but they have branched out into more adventurous idioms and they have been joined by the younger generation.

Growth, morphology and reproductive phenology of Gelidium adriaticum (Gelidiales, Rhodophyta) from the Slovenian coast (Gulf of Trieste, northern Adriatic)
Claudio Battelli, Peter Glasnović, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The occurrence, growth, external morphology and reproductive phenology of a Gelidium adriaticum settlement from the midlittoral zone in St. Simon Bay (Slovenian coast, Gulf of Trieste, northern Adriatic Sea) were investigated. The study was based on monthly sampling conducted for one year, from January to December 2023. The studied settlement was well developed in shaded rock crevices, forming dense turfs with a very patchy and irregular distribution. It was character-ized by a slight predominance of tetrasporic thalli, with a ratio between the three reproductive stages (tetrasporic:sterile:cystocarpic) of 1.19:1.04:1.00. The mean values of the morphological characteristics studied (height and width of the thallus, width of the widest part of the thallus axis, width of the apical, middle and basal parts of the erect axes) varied between seasons and reproductive stages. In general, these values were lower in the cystocarpic thalli than those in the tetrasporic and sterile stages in all seasons.
