Cooler, but not more crowded : Slovenia’s potential to harness coolcation through sustainable tourism marketing communication
Armand Faganel, Danijel Bratina, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Rising summer temperatures and recurrent heatwaves are changing European travel decisions and stimulating coolcation: travel motivated partly by the search for thermal comfort. This conceptual framework article examines how Slovenia could engage with this trend without transferring overtourism from heat-stressed coasts to Alpine lakes, valleys, forests and protected areas. A structured integrative review combines research on climate-sensitive tourism, overtourism, demarketing and behavioral communication with official Slovenian statistics and policy evidence. Longitudinal SURS releases show strong tourism growth from 2017 to 2025 and a rising absolute importance of mountain resorts, but they do not identify heat avoidance as the cause of travel. This synthesis therefore treats recent mountain-coast differences as exploratory signals rather than proof of a structural coolcation shift. It develops the five-stage COOL-SMC conceptual framework, which connects capacity intelligence, ecologically screened offer design, communication, local legitimacy and adaptive evaluation. The framework’s distinctive proposition is that promotional intensity should be governed by ecological, infrastructural and social readiness rather than optimized independently for reach or arrivals. COOL-SMC is not empirically validated; it specifies propositions, indicators and decision processes for expert assessment, field pilots and longitudinal testing in small, nature-rich destinations.

Perceived psychological consequences of multiple overlapping crises in Slovenia : findings from a qualitative study
Eva Sedlašek, Meta Lavrič, Lucia Rojs, Polonca Borko, Vita Poštuvan, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Background Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, people in Slovenia have faced a series of overlapping crises at both global and national levels, including the Russo-Ukrainian conflict, rising economic costs, and major natural disasters. Although extensive quantitative research has examined pandemic-related mental health outcomes, comparatively little is known about how individuals subjectively perceive multiple overlapping crises, given the cumulative and interactive nature of contemporary crises – situations in which crises across multiple systems become causally entangled and mutually amplify their effects. This study aimed to explore the perceived psychological consequences of multiple overlapping crises among adults in Slovenia, guided by the polycrisis framework. Methods Using a qualitative research design based on Constructivist Grounded Theory, we conducted semi-structured, in-depth interviews between June and November 2023 with 24 participants (16 women, 8 men; mean age 49 years, range 21–76). Interviews were audio-recorded, manually transcribed, and analyzed using ATLAS.ti 24 software. Analysis involved initial and focused coding, constant comparison, and analytic memo-writing, continuing until theoretical saturation was reached. A total of 274 quotations were coded into 16 final codes. Results Three analytical categories of perceived psychological consequences emerged: duration (short-term vs. long-term), valence (positive vs. negative), and level of impact (individual vs. societal). Short-term consequences were predominantly individual-level experiences tied to the acute pandemic period, including negative outcomes (e.g., stress, mental health decline, social polarization) and positive outcomes (e.g., increased time with close ones, time in nature, reduced pressure). Positive long-term consequences included closer relationships and increased gratitude; negative ones included a reduced sense of safety, distrust in authorities, weaker social ties, and a perceived decline in social cohesion. Conclusions Based on the analytical findings, we developed the Fortress Wall Model of Psychological Adaptation to Crisis, which conceptualizes the experience of compounding crises as a dynamic, phased psychological process. The findings underscore the need to address people’s emotional experiences during acute crisis phases and to maintain monitoring and support of psychological well-being beyond the acute period, as negative consequences – particularly heightened uncertainty, distrust, and a diminished sense of safety – persist long after crises subside and are intensified by subsequent stressors.

Major sport events returning to emerging sports tourism nations : willingness to pay for the EuroBasket in Slovenia
Simon Ličen, Renata Slabe Erker, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: As Slovenia prepares to co-host the 2029 EuroBasket, or European Basketball Championship for men, this article examines the variables that influenced taxpayers’ willingness to support public backing for a previous rendition of the tournament. The authors surveyed 374 Slovenian taxpayers when the country hosted the event in 2013, and determined that on average, they stated a willingness to pay (SWTP) of €18.7 per person. A Tobit model showed that belief in the societal impact of sports events and the nation-building potential of the tournament increased SWTP by €5.1. Wealthier respondents were less willing to contribute; to overcome this challenge, future promotional campaigns should target higher earners. Beyond money, respondents valued intangible benefits including national pride, international recognition, and skills gained in event organization and marketing. When Slovenia co-hosts the tournament again in 2029, the local organizing committee should spotlight both tangible and emotional benefits, amplify community narratives, and design curated promotional campaigns to secure the trust of a broad range of supporters and stakeholders.

CAP subsidies, technical efficiency, and its persistence : evidence from Slovenian animal farms
Andrzej Pisulewski, Jerzy Marzec, Štefan Bojnec, Imre Fertő, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Improving farm efficiency is central to enhancing productivity, income, and structural transformation in European agriculture. However, inefficiency is often persistent and rooted in structural constraints. This paper examines how the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) affects technical efficiency and its persistence in animal farming, using Slovenia as a case study. Slovenia provides a relevant empirical setting due to the dominance of small-scale farms, strong reliance on subsidies, and limited economies of scale – characteristics shared by many structurally constrained EU Member States. We apply a Bayesian dynamic stochastic frontier model that jointly accounts for efficiency persistence and technological heterogeneity. Using disaggregated CAP subsidy data, we assess how different policy instruments influence short-run and long-run technical efficiency across heterogeneous farm types. The results reveal four main findings. First, there is strong evidence against a common production frontier, indicating substantial technological heterogeneity among animal farms. Second, the effect of CAP subsidies on short-run technical efficiency depends both on the direction of their impact on efficiency persistence and on the level of technical efficiency in the previous period. Similarly, their impact on long-run technical efficiency is shaped by their effect on persistence and by the level of long-run efficiency. Third, the effects of CAP subsidies are heterogeneous across instruments: investment and other subsidies enhance both short-run and long-run technical efficiency, whereas decoupled payments and agri-environmental subsidies reduce efficiency at both horizons. Fourth, payments for less-favored areas consistently lead to a deterioration in technical efficiency in both the short and the long run.

Policy-induced welfare losses from limited decumulation options : the case of Slovenia’s DC pensions
Dino Šterpin, Suzana Laporšek, Boštjan Vovk, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This study examines restricted decumulation options for retirees with Defined Contribution (DC) in Slovenia and shows how these constraints create an implicit tax on accumulated assets. Using the Money’s Worth framework, we find that Slovenian annuities offer lower value than comparable products in advanced markets. We develop a utility-based model with loss aversion to quantify welfare losses across eight retiree types, differing in loss aversion, bequest motive, replacement rate, and time preference. Seven out of eight retiree types achieve higher utility under currently unavailable strategies. We introduce the Implicit Tax on DC Assets to capture the opportunity cost of restricted product availability.

Do agri-environmental schemes reduce farm greenhouse gas emissions? : evidence from Slovenia
Štefan Bojnec, Imre Fertő, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from agriculture is a key objective of the European Union's Green Deal and is among considerations of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Agri-environmental schemes (AES) are the main CAP instruments to promote more sustainable farming, yet their short-term climate effectiveness remains uncertain. This study provides the first farm-level evidence for Slovenia on whether AES participation reduces GHG emission intensity and whether effects differ across production systems. Using a balanced panel of 227 farms from the Farm Accountancy Data Network (2014–2021), we estimate dynamic treatment effects of AES adoption on net carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions per hectare, applying modern difference-in-differences (DiD) estimators for staggered adoption and extensive robustness checks, including alternative estimators, placebo tests, and dynamic conditioning. Results show that AES adopters had higher pre-adoption emission intensity, consistent with targeted uptake by higher-emission farms. However, estimated reductions in emission intensity during the first one to two years after adoption are small, statistically insignificant, and robust across specifications. These findings suggest that broad, practice-based AES may not deliver immediate, measurable climate benefits at the farm level, either because effects take longer to materialize or because current schemes are insufficiently targeted to high-emission sources. Policies that combine more precise targeting, climate-specific measures, and long-term monitoring may be needed to unlock the full climate mitigation potential of AES.
