Roma in the healthcare system : experiences of healthcare professionals
Debora Levstik Jašarevič, Andrej Kočevar, Daša Petrič, Mirko Prosen, Sabina Ličen, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Introduction. The Roma community faces numerous challenges in accessing health services, including language barriers, discrimination, low health literacy, and social exclusion. Aim. The aim of the research was to examine the experiences of health professionals in treating Roma patients, with a focus on communication, cultural differences, and access to health services. Special emphasis was also placed on the presence of antigypsyism in the healthcare system. Methods. The research was based on a qualitativedescriptive design. The sample included 15 healthcare workers with experience in treating Roma patients, primarily from the Dolenjska region. Data were collected through semi-structured individual interviews conducted between November and December 2024. The results were analyzed using thematic analysis. Results. Thematic analysis identified four themes: (1) Cultural characteristics of the Roma community, (2) Healthcare of Roma, (3) Interpersonal relationships between healthcare workers and Roma, (4) Communication with Roma. The results show that language barriers, low health literacy, and cultural differences are the main challenges in the treatment of Roma patients. Healthcare workers highlighted the use of “Roma helpers” – cultural mediators, communication adaptations, and educational workshops as successful strategies. Conclusion. The research highlights the importance of intercultural competences for improving healthcare for the Roma community. Healthcare professionals identified key strategies for addressing antigypsyism, such as patience, building trust, involving Roma cultural mediators, and organising targeted workshops. These strategies align with current guidelines, as they are based on respect, inclusion, and co-design of services with the Roma community. The findings can contribute to the development of tailored programmes that promote inclusion and reduce health inequalities.

Gender equality barriers in agriculture and life sciences in Central european universities
Veronika Paksi, Katalin Tardos, Judit Takács, Csilla Judit Suhajda, Jana Mazancová, Štefan Bojnec, Julianna Kobolák, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The European Union aims to foster research excellence, among others, by increasing gender equality (GE) in the European research area. The mandatory introduction of gender equality plans (GEP) mobilised universities to assess, target, and monitor GE in different fields of science. A wide range of barriers have been explored in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), characterised by the low participation of women. However, significant obstacles to GE can emerge in relatively more gender‐balanced and, therefore, rarely studied fields, such as agriculture and life sciences (ALS). Experiences can differ in Central and Eastern European countries, characterised by rather traditional gender and family norms. This study explores different stakeholders’ perceptions of the main barriers of GE, with particular attention to ALS. We conducted nine focus groups (82 participants in total) with middle management, academic staff, and students from Czech, Hungarian, and Slovenian universities, aiming to contribute to the revision of their first GEP. Discussions were centred on recruitment, leadership positions, work–life balance, gender‐based violence, sexual harassment, organisational culture, integrating the gender dimension into research and teaching, and institutionalisation of GEPs. Findings revealed that women in ALS face partly similar gender‐based obstacles to their counterparts in less gender‐balanced fields—perceptions of education and career choices, work–life imbalance, and exclusion by recruitment and promotion practices—and also additional ALS‐related challenges of laboratory and fieldwork. Findings highlight the need for institutions to carefully address these areas in their state‐of‐the‐art assessments and develop sector‐specific, tailor‐made GEPs.

Quaternary range dynamics of ecologically divergent species (Edraianthus serpyllifolius and E. tenuifolius, Campanulaceae) within the Balkan refugium
Boštjan Surina, Peter Schönswetter, Gerald M. Schneeweiss, 2011, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: We investigated Quaternary range dynamics of two closely related but ecologically divergent species (cold-tolerant Edraianthus serpyllifolius and thermophilic Edraianthus tenuifolius) with overlapping distribution ranges endemic to the western Balkan Peninsula, an important yet understudied Pleistocene refugium. Our aims were: to test predictions of the 'refugia-within refugia' model of strong genetic subdivisions due to population isolation in separate refugia; to explore whether two ecologically divergent species reacted differently to Pleistocene climatic fluctuations; and to test predictions of the displacement refugia model of stronger differentiation among populations in the thermophilic E. tenuifolius compared with the cold-tolerant E. serpyllifolius
