Effects of dance-based exercise on health indicators in cancer patients : a systematic review and meta-analysisSara Zgonc, Aleksandra Ilić, Matej Plevnik, Žiga Kozinc, Saša Jovanović, 2026, pregledni znanstveni članek Opis: Introduction:Dance-based exercise has been increasingly explored as a complementary intervention in oncology, with potential benefits for physical, psychological, and social health. However, evidence remains inconsistent, and the overall strength of evidence has not been clearly established. The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the effects of dance-based exercise on health indicators in individuals with cancer. Methods:A systematic search of the literature was conducted in April 2025. Randomized controlled trials investigating dance-based interventions in adults with cancer were included. Outcomes of interest were quality of life, depression, and stress. Methodological quality was assessed using the PEDro scale, and certainty of evidence was evaluated using the GRADE approach. Where outcome measures were comparable, random-effects meta-analyses were performed using standardized mean differences (SMD) with 95% confidence intervals. Results:Meta-analytic results indicated that dance-based exercise significantly improved physical aspects of quality of life (standardized mean difference [SMD] = 0.61, 95% CI [0.07, 1.15], P = .03). A positive but non-significant trend was observed for the social/family component of quality of life (SMD = 0.87, 95% CI [−0.21, 1.95], P = .11). Heterogeneity across studies was high for both analyses. For depression and stress, pooled results did not reach statistical significance, although several individual trials reported improvements, particularly among participants with higher baseline stress levels. Evidence was very low to low quality. Conclusions:Overall, findings suggest that dance-based exercise represents a feasible and beneficial complementary intervention that can enhance selected dimensions of quality of life among cancer patients. Further research employing standardized intervention protocols and consistent outcome measures is needed to better characterize the magnitude and specificity of effects across psychological and physical health domains. 2. Targeting skeletal muscle melatonin-MT2 signaling to attenuate the obesity-cancer axis : a metabolic perspectiveMihaela Jurdana, Lovro Žiberna, 2026, pregledni znanstveni članek Opis: Obesity and metabolic syndrome promote malignancies through chronic inflammation and sustained activation of insulin and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) signaling. Skeletal muscle is central to this tumor-promoting milieu because it governs insulin-stimulated glucose disposal, lipid oxidation, and endocrine crosstalk. This narrative review explores whether melatonin signaling in skeletal muscle, particularly via melatonin receptor 2 (MT2), represents a modifiable node within the obesity–cancer axis. Experimental evidence indicates that melatonin activates MT2-linked Gi/o and calcium-sensitive pathways converging on phosphoinositide 3-kinase–protein kinase B (PI3K–Akt), extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERK), and calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II–adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase–peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1-alpha (CaMKII–AMPK–PGC-1α) signaling. These pathways enhance insulin sensitivity, mitochondrial function, and lipid partitioning while reducing myosteatosis and cellular stress. By improving muscle quality, melatonin may lower systemic insulin and IGF-1 drive and inflammatory adipokine tone that fuel tumor-promoting PI3K–Akt–mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling. However, human evidence remains limited and timing-dependent. Melatonin exposure in the fed state or near carbohydrate intake may worsen glycemia, particularly in carriers of melatonin receptor 1B (MTNR1B) risk alleles. Chronobiology-informed, genotype-guided trials with detailed muscle phenotyping and cancer-relevant endpoints are warranted. 3. Empowering men to take control of their own health : development and validation of the Men’s Response to Colorectal Cancer Screening Scale (MR–CCSS)Vesna Jašić, Mirko Prosen, Sabina Ličen, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Background/Objectives: Despite the proven effectiveness of colorectal cancer screening, men are less likely to participate than women, with emotional, behavioural and informational barriers contributing to this disparity. The aim of this study was to develop and validate the Men’s Response to Colorectal Cancer Screening Scale (MR–CCSS), a gender-sensitive instrument for measuring key factors that influence the participation of men in colorectal cancer screening. Methods: The scale was developed through a structured process that included qualitative data from focus groups (n = 20 men) and expert review (n = 11 professionals). Initial item pools were refined based on indices of content validity (I-CVI ≥ 0.78; S-CVI/Ave ≥ 0.90), resulting in a 23-item scale. The MR–CCSS was administered to 289 Slovenian men aged 50–74 years, and its psychometric properties were assessed using exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and reliability tests. Results: The EFA revealed a five-factor structure. Together, these factors explained 61.9% of the total variance. The CFA confirmed the robustness of the model (CFI = 0.928, TLI = 0.910 and RMSEA = 0.056). The internal consistency was acceptable to good, with Cronbach’s alpha between 0.665 (factor 4) and 0.833 (factor 5) for the subscales and 0.863 for the total scale. The ROC analysis showed moderate predictive accuracy (AUC = 0.702), with an optimal cut-off value of 92.5 (sensitivity = 0.782 and specificity = 0.509) for participation in screening. Conclusions: The MR–CCSS is a valid and reliable tool for identifying barriers to colorectal cancer screening in men. Its use can serve as a basis for gender-specific interventions, customised health education and strategies to improve screening equity. 6. Cancer cachexia-anorexia syndrome and skeletal muscle wastingMihaela Jurdana, 2009, pregledni znanstveni članek Opis: Cachexia-anorexia syndrome is a common and important indicator of cancer. It occurs in 30% to 80% of cancer patients. Cachexia means "bad condition" and may be present in the early stages of tumor growth, before any signs of malignancy. Cancer cachexia is a syndrome of progressive body wasting, characterized by loss of adipose tissue and skeletal muscle mass. In most cancer patients, cachexia is characteriyed by anorexia, which implies a failure of food intake, regulated through a complex system of hormones and neuropeptides. A decline in food intake relative to energy expenditure is a fundamental physiologic derangement leading to cancer associated weight loss. The weight loss in patients with cachexia-anorexia syndrome differs from that in caloric starvation or anorexia nervosa. The pathophysiology of cancer cachexia is not fully understood; however, studies have shown that cytokines are important in the alteration of the carbohydrate, lipid and protein metabolism. Cancer, prolonged bed rest, HIV infection and aging are conditionsin which muscle wasting is a common feature. An intervention that may potentially attenuate the progression of muscle wasting in cancer patientsis resistance exercise training, defined as multiple repetitions of static or dynamic muscular contractions that increase muscle mass. The main components of the pathological state of cachexia are anorexia and metabolic abnormalities such as fat depletion and muscle protein catabolism. Future developments may concentrate on the molecular abnormalities of cachexia and on examination of the functional benefit of resistance exercise training for cancer related muscle wasting.
