ICT use in early childhood education from parents’ and educators’ perspectives
Nina Krmac, Petra Furlan, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The study aimed to investigate the use of information and communication technology (ICT) by pre-school children as perceived by parents and educators. By analyzing the perceptions of both groups, we wanted to understand how frequently and in what context ICT is used in children's daily lives and in the educational process. The results showed that educators use ICT only occasionally, typically a few times a year, while parents reported a much higher average weekly use of ICT by children. Statistical analyses revealed significant differences in how parents and educators perceive the impact of ICT on children's development, particularly in the areas of knowledge, creativity, and originality, with educators rating the developmental potential of ICT higher. The most commonly used technology among preschool children was television, followed by smartphones, tablets and computers. The discussion also highlighted differences in the use of applications and emphasized the need for greater professional support in the selection and use of ICT for children's development.

Role of music therapy in the development of language skills in children with autism spectrum disorder : a systematic literature review
Lucija Mlakar, Vesna Posavčević, 2026, pregledni znanstveni članek

Opis: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition that typically emerges in early childhood, marked by difficulties in communication, social interaction, behaviour, and emotional regulation. Despite these challenges, many children with ASD demonstrate exceptional musical abilities, making music a powerful medium for enhancing self-expression, fostering social bonds, and supporting neurological development crucial for speech and social skills. Historically, minimally verbal children with ASD were often excluded from research due to the difficulty of assessment using standardised tools; however, recent advancements have enabled more inclusive studies. Over the past decade, naturalistic approaches have gained prominence, with music therapy emerging as a particularly promising intervention. A systematic literature review, based on original research sourced from PubMed, Sage, and ScienceDirect, examined six studies involving children aged two to twelve years with minimal verbal abilities and a clinical diagnosis of autism. These studies consistently found that music therapy significantly supports the development of language and social communication skills, while also enhancing fronto-temporal brain connectivity. The review contributes valuable insights into the current state of research, underscores the importance of early intervention and parental involvement, and lays the groundwork for further exploration into the role of music therapy in language development for children with ASD.

A study of motivational strategies in arts activities for preschool children in special education units
Barbara Kopačin, Ana Kovačič, Eda Birsa, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Among preschool children with special educational needs, art can open additional pathways to expression, safe exploration and experimentation, and it can foster motivation for creation. The purpose of the study was to determine which strategies educators in developmental departments use to encourage the active participation of preschool children in artistic activities (RQ1), and how motivation is expressed among these children during artistic creation (RQ2). A qualitative methodology was employed, using semi-structured interviews and observations of preschool children during interdisciplinary artistic activities. The results showed that educators use diverse and tailored strategies, such as linking art with play, taking children’s interests into account, and creating a supportive and safe environment. Musical activities proved particularly effective, as they stimulated intrinsic motivation and acted as a bridge to visual/artistic expression. Children’s motivation manifested itself in active engagement, curiosity and persistence, especially in activities that allowed for choice and sensory-adapted approaches. The findings emphasise the importance of individualisation, a process-oriented approach and interdisciplinarity for fostering intrinsic motivation in children with special needs. The study originally examines the integration of musical and visual activities as a strategy for promoting the motivation of preschool children with special needs in developmental departments. In doing so, it opens up a new research and pedagogical area and offers practical guidelines for encouraging motivation through the effective incorporation of interdisciplinary approaches into special-educational practice.

Implementation of the Slovenian act on the treatment of children and adolescents with emotional and behavioural problems or disorders in education
Matej Vukovič, Mitja Krajnčan, Katja Vrhunc Pfeifer, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: In 2020, Slovenia implemented the Act on the Treatment of Children and Adolescents With Emotional and Behavioural Problems or Disorders in Education. Using a mixed-methods approach, we investigated how professionals in expert centres1 and social work centres, youth judges, and paedopsychiatrists, as key stakeholders responsible and competent for the professional and lawful treatment of such youth, seek and implement the most appropriate forms of assistance for them, and how they assess the implementation of the Act and the cooperation amongst them. Data were collected through four tailored questionnaires, as well as focus groups and semi-structured interviews. The research is part of a larger Slovenian study entitled Phenomenological and aetiological analysis of emotional and behavioural problems and disorders and the development of didactic approaches for specific subtypes of problems and disorders, not yet published. Based on the opinions of these experts from various fields, we identified shortcomings in the system of support, including what should be eliminated or changed, and what new forms of support and cooperation among stakeholders would be reasonable and necessary to introduce. The results of the survey are also important for understanding the competences, responsibilities, and cooperation among social work centres, expert centres, paedopsychiatrists, and youth judges.

Perception of people with visual impairments
Mateja Maljevac, 2025, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Opis: Blindness, partial sightedness, and cortical/cerebral visual impairment pose complex challenges and are difficult to define in a single manner. In the Slovenian school system, the pedagogical definition focuses on the specific visual abilities of children, serving as the basis for adapting the educational process and creating an inclusive environment. Children with visual impairments require content that offers an alternative to visual information, enabling them to participate actively in society. The development of tactile perception has a key role in their holistic development; through play and interaction, they learn about the world around them. Extended curriculum activities should promote concrete and language-rich experiences, as this enables the comprehension of fundamental concepts. Effective strategies for working with children with visual impairments include tactile modelling and audio description, which facilitate children’s exploration and interpretation of information. Audio description enhances the accessibility of cultural resources, while tactile content promotes the development of fine motor skills. Together, these elements create a supportive framework that fosters children’s independence and success. The conscious design of learning content and adaptation of teaching methods are crucial for successfully including children with visual impairments in the modern education system.

“Goldilocks day” : identifying the optimal awake movement behaviour composition for predicted cardiometabolic health outcomes in youth
Joey Murphy, Charlotte Lund Rasmussen, Javier Brazo-Sayavera, Ademola Victor Damilola, Nastja Podrekar, Aoko Oluwayomi, Luís Bettencourt Sardinha, Niels Wedderkopp, Elaine M. Murtagh, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Background Most research focuses on the relationship of individual movement behaviours, neglecting how different compositions throughout the day associate with cardiometabolic health outcomes. Aim The aim of this study was to explore the optimal awake movement behaviour composition associated with predicted cardiometabolic health outcomes in youth. Subjects and methods The study included participants (N = 1,310 participants; 11.1 ± 2.5 [range = 7.98–17.1 years]; 55.9% female; 100% European) from the International Children’s Accelerometry Database. Accelerometer measured sedentary behaviour (SB), light-(LPA) and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) defined the awake movement behaviour composition. Four cardiometabolic health outcomes (lipid profile, blood pressure, glucose metabolism, and body mass) were assessed through nine parameters. These were regressed against the awake movement behaviour composition, adjusting for relevant covariates to estimate the optimal awake movement behaviour composition for each predicted cardiometabolic health outcome (i.e. “Goldilocks Day”). Results The final models found a significant relationship between the awake movement behaviour composition and cardiometabolic health outcome, excluding lipid profile indicators. For indicators of glucose metabolism, blood pressure and body mass, the Goldilocks Day consisted of less SB (–12 to −39 min), LPA (–8 to −32 min) and more MVPA (+44 to 47 min) when compared to the sample mean. Conclusion These findings concur with current guidelines that more MVPA and less SB are better, but the optimal time youth should spend in each behaviour depends on the health outcome of interest. This indicates that one size does not fit all when making recommendations for multiple cardiometabolic health outcomes.
