Engaging European local communities in biodiversity genomics research : a five-step framework for scientists

Opis: Biodiversity genomics research can inform conservation, management, and policy, including implementation and monitoring linked to the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF). Still, its societal relevance depends on how research is designed and interpreted with the people who live in, work with, and care for the species and places being studied. Local Communities often hold Local Ecological Knowledge that can improve sampling design, contextualise genomic patterns, and support the translation of findings into practice. Yet, community participation in biodiversity genomics remains limited, partly because researchers may lack practical guidance, training, incentives, or time for engagement. Here, we propose a five-step framework for engaging European Local Communities in biodiversity genomics projects. The framework covers early relationship building, respect for local context and knowledge, co-creation of research roles, transparent benefit sharing, and long-term knowledge transfer. We also outline biodiversity genomics-specific points that require early discussion, including biological sampling, genomic sequence data, genetic variant data, analytical outputs, associated ecological and locality information, Digital Sequence Information, repository deposition, interpretation, and reuse. The framework is intended as a practical starting point for research teams, funders, and community collaborators seeking to make biodiversity genomics research more transparent, locally informed, and useful for conservation decision-making.

Graphlet-based edge weighting for improved community detection in complex networks

Opis: Community detection reveals the functional organization of complex networks. Unlike edge-based methods, graphlet-based approaches use higher-order structures, but most studies focus on common motifs or lack validation on networks with known communities. We evaluate eight small motifs on synthetic and real-world networks and propose a framework that weights node pairs by their graphlet co-occurrence while preserving original edges. This captures both direct connections and local topology, improving community detection. Our results show that graphlet-based weighting consistently enhances performance, but no single motif is best for all networks. Simpler motifs can perform as well as dense cliques, suggesting that relying only on cliques may miss important connectivity patterns.

Roma in the healthcare system : experiences of healthcare professionals

Opis: Introduction. The Roma community faces numerous challenges in accessing health services, including language barriers, discrimination, low health literacy, and social exclusion. Aim. The aim of the research was to examine the experiences of health professionals in treating Roma patients, with a focus on communication, cultural differences, and access to health services. Special emphasis was also placed on the presence of antigypsyism in the healthcare system. Methods. The research was based on a qualitativedescriptive design. The sample included 15 healthcare workers with experience in treating Roma patients, primarily from the Dolenjska region. Data were collected through semi-structured individual interviews conducted between November and December 2024. The results were analyzed using thematic analysis. Results. Thematic analysis identified four themes: (1) Cultural characteristics of the Roma community, (2) Healthcare of Roma, (3) Interpersonal relationships between healthcare workers and Roma, (4) Communication with Roma. The results show that language barriers, low health literacy, and cultural differences are the main challenges in the treatment of Roma patients. Healthcare workers highlighted the use of “Roma helpers” – cultural mediators, communication adaptations, and educational workshops as successful strategies. Conclusion. The research highlights the importance of intercultural competences for improving healthcare for the Roma community. Healthcare professionals identified key strategies for addressing antigypsyism, such as patience, building trust, involving Roma cultural mediators, and organising targeted workshops. These strategies align with current guidelines, as they are based on respect, inclusion, and co-design of services with the Roma community. The findings can contribute to the development of tailored programmes that promote inclusion and reduce health inequalities.

The role of community science in DNA-based biodiversity monitoring

Opis: The mutual interest in nature by the general public and scientists has led to many collaborations, past and present. Community science shows great potential for monitoring species occurrences and distributions, especially in combination with scalable and (semi)-automated methods such as DNA-based monitoring, helping to obtain data from a broader geographic and temporal range than would be possible by the scientific community alone. Here, we present an overview of the complementarity between community science and DNA-based biomonitoring through examples from ongoing projects. The involvement of hobby experts is particularly crucial for building up the necessary species reference databases that enable DNA-based monitoring. Based on this overview, we identify some key points related to learning opportunities and participant recognition to maximise the success, impact and benefit of community participants in DNA-based monitoring.
