Vertex numbers of simplicial complexes with free abelian fundamental groupFlorian Frick, Matt Superdock, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: We show that the minimum number of vertices of a simplicial complex with fundamental group ℤn is at most O(n) and at least Ω(n3/4). For the upper bound, we use a result on orthogonal 1-factorizations of K2n. For the lower bound, we use a fractional Sylvester–Gallai result. This application of extremal results in discrete geometry seems to be new. We also prove that any group presentation ⟨S|R⟩ ≅ ℤn whose relations are of the form gahbic for g, h, i ∈ S has at least Ω(n3/2) generators.

2. The objective is to explore the extent to which these students are identified in school settings and to examine professional awareness, attitudes, and practices regarding their needs. Due to the complex and often contradictory nature of their profiles, the giftedness of twice-exceptional students is frequently overlooked, especially when behavioral and emotional difficulties obscure their academic potential. Relying primarily on quantitative descriptive methods, the research surveyed education professionals on their knowledge and recognition of twice-exceptionality. The findings reveal a persistent reliance on traditional markers of giftedness, such as measurable academic performance, with insufficient attention paid to behavioral and emotional indicators. The study emphasizes the need for a multidimensional and holistic approach to giftedness identification, combining academic, psychological, and behavioral assessments. It further calls for systematic professional development and institutional adjustments to ensure these students receive adequate support, preventing their marginalization and enabling the full realization of their potential.

3. On ▫$L^2$▫ approximation by planar Pythagorean-hodograph curvesRida T. Farouki, Marjetka Knez, Vito Vitrih, Emil Žagar, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The ▫$L^2$▫ approximation of planar curves by Pythagorean-hodograph (PH) polynomial curves is addressed, based on the distance defined by a metric for planar curves represented as complex valued functions of a real parameter. Because of the nonlinear nature of polynomial PH curves, constructing ▫$L^2$▫ approximants involves solving a nonlinear optimization problem. However, a simplified method that requires only the solution of a linear system may be developed by formulating the ▫$L^2$▫ approximation in the preimage space. The extension of the methodology to approximation by PH B-spline curves is also addressed, and several examples are provided to illustrate its implementation and potential.
