The Narconovela and Crime in Colombia: 40 Years after La Mala Hierba
Carolina Galindo, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This article analyses the origins of the narconovela (narcosoap opera) in Colombia, focusing on the controversy caused, at the start of the 1980’s, by the soap opera entitled La mala hierba (The Evil Weed). Through an analysis of its reception during the time it was on the air, some links with the current discussion about this genre will be established, along with some links with its impact on the legitimization of narcotics trafficking and crime in Colombia and Latin America in recent years.

Crime, Women and Information and Communications Technologies: Everyday Management of Insecurity in Santiago and Buenos Aires
Brenda Focas, Alejandra Luneke, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: In recent decades, crime has become a public concern and a daily issue in Latin America. While much research has focused on organized crime and crime prevention, less attention has been given to how crime affects the everyday lives of young women in cities. This study, based on interviews with women in Santiago, Chile, and Buenos Aires, Argentina, reveals that their primary concerns are street harassment and sexual crimes, which mainly impact their mobility in the city. Women avoid relying on mass media for information, instead turning to their mothers and grandmothers as primary sources of knowledge and fear. Chilean women express higher levels of concern, significantly restricting their activities, particularly leisure, compared to Argentine women. Despite these differences, women in both countries have adopted technologies for self-protection, although their lives remain deeply affected by the fear of crime.

Militias, Factions, and Precariousness: Notes on Living Conditions in the City of Rio de Janeiro Outskirts
Lia de Mattos Rocha, Monique Batista Carvalho, Jonathan da Motta, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper explores the dynamics of territorial control exercised by armed groups – factions and militias – in the outskirts and favelas of the city of Rio de Janeiro. The purpose was to investigate and describe the current dynamics of ‘siege’ produced by different armed groups, their effects on local sociability, and the production of precariousness to which residents of these locations are subjected. The research was conducted in six city territories and allowed the construction of a comparative matrix that cross-referenced the following information: type of armed group operating in the location; situation of the territory in terms of armed control; type of territorial presence; and relationship with the local population.

Sexual relations between adults and children in eighteenth-century Venice : the rhetoric of deviance
Larry Wolff, 2007, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper considers several cases that came before Venetian tribunals in the eighteenth century concerning sexual relations between adults and children. The paper will attempt to analyye the precise (or imprecise) nature of the criminality involved in such relations in the eighteenth century, and the particular concerns and procedures of Venetian law in addressing such cases. Analysis will consider to what extent modern terms such as 'deviance' and 'abuse' are relevant for understanding the meaning of such cases in their eighteenth-century contexts, and will address the significance of the Enlightenment for emphasizing particular categories of criminality. Further attention will be addressed to the concept of eighteenth-century libertinism, and its implications for sexual relations between adults and children, and also to the evolution of early modern ideas about the special significance of childhood. The disciplinary framework of the paper will consider the dimensions of legal, social, and cultural history

Criminali e 'cronaca nera' negli strumenti pubblici d'informazione tra '600 e '700
Mario Infelise, 2007, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The spreading of news-sheets with different characteristics that depended on their purpose and destinations can be recorded in 16th century Europe. The press appeared in the form of public and secret announcements, manuscripts, and printed papers. The main purpose of news-sheets was the diffusion of political and military news while the presence of other types of information was quite an exception. In the 17th century, however, some news on the customs and culture, or law reports, all with different characteristics depending on the typology of the news-sheet, appeared. The case of fliers printed by small typographers to accompany public events followed quite a different pattern. The typographers would reproduce unusual stories to be sold to the popular public in squares and at fairs. In this case descriptions of particularly brutal and atrocious crimes would also be used. However, these descriptions do not seem to match the criminal events themselves. It was not the truth that counted but the story itself. Interestingly, after many years the identical events settled in different environments and bearing a new date can frequently be found

L'amaro caso della signora di Carini : rappresentazioni di un delitto d'onore del XVI secolo
Enza Pelleriti, 2007, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The atrocious murder of Laura Lanza La Grua, Lady Carini, during the evening of 4 December, 1563, was rapidly shrouded with mystery and concealed truths, and thus rapidly transformed into a legend. The course of popular fantasy accompanied the official memory in a kind of common conspiracy of silence in protection of the reputation of one of the most important families of the Sicilian dominant class. The event happened at the Carini Castle when Sicily was under the rule of Spanish viceroys and their feudal lords. The actors were: don Cesare Lanza, his son-in-law Vincenzo La Grua Talamanca, and wife of the latter, Laura, who seemed to have given her heart to her cousin Ludovico Vernagallo, a rich landowner. The murder of Laura Lanza can undoubtedly be described as a crime of honour. According to the old law of marital honour, which can be traced in the famous "Lex Iulia de adulteriis" of Roman law, and, as well - borrowed from the constitution of Federico II - in the rules of Ruggero II: "Si maritus uxorem in ipso actu adulterii depraehenderit tam uxorem quam adulterum occidere licebit, nulla tamen mora protracta". Therefore, a husband who surprised his wife and her lover in an obvious act of adultery could kill them both. These were the texts that Cesare Lanza, Laura's father, relied on in a statement made to King Phillip II when admitting his act. Concurrently, the story of Lady Carini also depicts the complex nature of family relations in the Sicilian society during the old regime. Examining a variety of sources that have delineated its historiographic profile, here the story will be visited again. Not only will the interpretations that followed the tragic event be presented, but the importance of judicial, literary, and visual representations, whose integrated analysis can supplement missing information in the construction of a never ascertained truth, covered with a veil of family honour and interpretations produced by a kind of anthropological romanticism will also be researched.
