Lower-limb damping characteristics during various repetitive jumping forms : reliability and sensitivity analysis
Marko Kapeleti, Marc Elmeua González, Igor Zlatović, David Nikolić, Oskar Cvjetičanin, Nejc Šarabon, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: An essential aspect of jumping performance is the ability to control impact forces. One of the key measures of this ability is the damping ratio, a dimensionless parameter that quantifies the rate at which oscillations decay following a disturbance. This study aims to assess the intra-session and inter-session reliability of damping ratios at different lower-limb anatomical landmarks and evaluate their sensitivity in detecting differences between various repetitive jumping forms, with an emphasis on establishing a specific methodological approach. Twenty-three physically active male and female students performed maximal countermovement jumps (CMJs) and bilateral (BL) and unilateral (UL) hopping (HOP). Ten wireless inertial measurement units recorded inertial data of five bilateral lower-limb anatomical landmarks. Results showed that the damping ratios during CMJ and HOPUL demonstrated good reliability, whereas in HOPBL were moderately reliable. The damping ratios of nearly all the anatomical landmarks differed between the jumping forms. CMJ had the highest values, HOPBL the lowest, and HOPUL values in between, likely due to variations in joint stiffness and amplitude displacement, as well as stretch‒shortening cycle reliance. Methodologically, using 20 repetitions in an intra-session trial and averaging left and right sides for inter-session reliability and inter-jump sensitivity, damping ratios are acceptably reliable and sufficiently sensitive for biomechanical analysis of different repetitive jumping forms. This metric could potentially be a valuable tool in developing theoretical nonlinear multibody mass‒spring‒damper models and could enhance biomechanical analysis with practical applications in sports training and rehabilitation.

Decompositions of the wreath product of certain directed graphs into directed hamiltonian cycles
Alice Lacaze-Masmonteil, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: We affirm several special cases of a conjecture that first appears in Alspach et al. (1987) which stipulates that the wreath (lexicographic) product of two hamiltonian decomposable di- rected graphs is also hamiltonian decomposable. Specifically, we show that the wreath product of hamiltonian decomposable directed graph G, such that |V (G)| is even and |V (G)| ⩾ 3, with a directed m-cycle such that m ⩾ 4 or the complete symmetric directed graph on m vertices such that m ⩾ 3, is hamiltonian decomposable. We also show the wreath product of a directed n-cycle, where n is even, with a directed m-cycle, where m ∈ {2, 3}, is not hamiltonian decomposable.

Cycle separating cuts in possible counterexamples to the cycle double cover and the Berge-Fulkerson conjectures
Edita Máčajová, Giuseppe Mazzuoccolo, Gloria Tabarelli, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: It is known that smallest counterexamples to the Cycle Double Cover Conjecture and Berge-Fulkerson Conjecture (if they exist) are cyclically 4- and 5-edge-connected, respectively. We further analyse small cycle separating cuts in possible counterexamples. We prove that if a smallest counterexample G to the CDC Conjecture contains a cycle separating 4-cut S, then the behaviour of the admissible CDC coverings along the dangling edges of the two 4-poles induced by S is uniquely determined among more than 2 a priori possibilities. Similarly, for the Berge-Fulkerson Conjecture, we prove that among more than 2 a priori possibilities, there are only 13 pairs of admissible sets that could occur along the dangling edges of a 5-cut in a smallest counterexample.

The impact of hormonal contraceptives on skeletal muscle hypertrophy
Nevena Markov, Matevž Arčon, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Female reproductive hormones such as progesterone and estrogen play an important role in the body as they orchestrate functions of numerous cells including skeletal muscle cells. Onset of menses marks the beginning of reproductive life, whereas menopause marks its cessation. We distinguish three phases of the 28-day menstrual cycle namely follicular, ovulatory and luteal phases. The follicular phase is characterised by marked increases in estrogen, which triggers ovulation. During this phase, estrogen peaks, whereas progesterone levels are low. Following ovulation, the luteal phase commences marked by high progesterone levels and reduced estrogen. Indeed, these periodic fluctuations in reproductive hormones may affect rates of muscle protein synthesis and hence hinder sought adaptations such as skeletal muscle hypertrophy in female athletes. With the introduction of hormonal contraceptives, female athletes were able to have ameliorate the negative effects of the menstrual cycle by reducing menstrual cramping and bleeding. Hormonal contraceptives are constituted of a single or multiple synthetic hormones namely estrogen and progestin. Nevertheless, the impact of hormonal contraceptives on skeletal muscle hypertrophy remains elusive. In this review, we aim to present the potential implications of hormonal contraceptives on skeletal muscle hypertrophy.

Linear bounds on treewidth in terms of excluded planar minors
J. Pascal Gollin, Kevin Hendrey, Sang-il Oum, Bruce Reed, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: One of the fundamental results in graph minor theory is that for every planar graph $H$, there is a minimum integer $f(H)$ such that graphs with no minor isomorphic to $H$ have treewidth at most $f(H)$. A lower bound for $f(H)$ can be obtained by considering the maximum integer $k$ such that $H$ contains $k$ vertex-disjoint cycles. There exists a graph of treewidth $\Omega(k\log k)$ which does not contain $k$ vertex-disjoint cycles, from which it follows that $f(H) = \Omega(k\log k)$. In particular, if $f(H)$ is linear in $\lvert V(H) \rvert$ for graphs $H$ from a subclass of planar graphs, it is necessary that $n$-vertex graphs from the class contain at most $\lvert V(H) \rvert$ vertex-disjoint cycles. We ask whether this is also a sufficient condition, and demonstrate that this is true for classes of planar graphs with bounded component size. For an $n$-vertex graph $H$ which is a disjoint union of $r$ cycles, we show that ${f(H) \leq 3n/2 + O(r^2 \log r)}$, and improve this to $f(H)$≤$n$+O(√$n$) when $r$=2. In particular this bound is linear when $r$=O(√$n$/logn). We present a linear bound for $f(H)$ when $H$ is a subdivision of an $r$-edge planar graph for any constant~$r$. We also improve the best known bounds for $f(H)$ when $H$ is the wheel graph or the 4×4 grid, obtaining a bound of 160 for the latter.

Plane triangulations without large 2-trees
Allan Bickle, Gunnar Brinkmann, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: In 1995 Leizhen Cai asked whether each plane triangulation has a spanning 2-tree. This question was recently answered in the negative by Bickle. He gave a plane triangulation on 38 vertices for which each 2-tree contained in it misses at least one vertex. We give a smaller example on 29 vertices and show that for each c>0 there are plane triangulations P=(V,E), so that each 2-tree that is a subgraph of P contains fewer than c|V| vertices. We also give a lower bound for the size of a maximum 2-tree in plane triangulations by proving that each plane triangulation P=(V,E) contains a 2-tree on at least log_2 (|V|-1)+4 -log_2 3 vertices. Finally we give structural criteria based on the decomposition trees of Jackson and Yu that guarantee the existence of spanning 2-trees in plane triangulations. The results are proven by using the close relation of 2-trees to hamiltonian cycles and to induced trees in the dual for plane triangulations without separating triangles.

Integrating Happiness Research into Endpoint Indicators of Social Life Cycle Analysis
Stefan Mann, Melf-Hinrich Ehlers, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Endpoint indicators for social life cycle analysis (S-LCA) are still less consolidated than those for environmental LCA. There is a broad consensus that human well-being should be the overarching goal of social sustainability and therefore also of S-LCA. However, to date the two major databases for S-LCA are restricted to a multiplication of working hours with a quality- or risk-adjusted factor. This paper aims to evaluate the congruence between this technical pragmatism and well-established findings of happiness research. The analysis starts with the argument that evidence and consequentiality are necessary criteria for any variables used. It is then shown that some of the variables such as poverty are not consequential, while the unit of working hours lacks any evidence about a relationship with subjective well-being. The analysis concludes that a simple pointbased endpoint indicator would be more appropriate for S-LCA than the current hour-based indicator.

The Impact of Demographic Dynamics on Household Saving in Pre-COVID-19 South Africa
Afamefuna Emmanuel Nwogbo, Joel Hinaunye Eita, Sivan Chetty, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper examines the effect of demographic dynamics on household saving in pre-COVID-19 South Africa, across all nine provinces of South Africa. The study used panel autoregressive distributed lag (PARDL) and Dumitrescu-Hurlin panel causality methods. The results revealed a longrun relationship between demographic dynamics and household saving in South Africa, showing that the White working age population had a significant effect on South Africa’s household saving in both the long-run and short-run, while the Black and Coloured working age population groups significantly impacted household saving only in the long-run. However, the Asian/Indian working age population had no effect on household saving in either the long run or short run. The Dumitrescu-Hurlin panel causality analysis revealed a bidirectional causality running between Asian/Indian, Black, and Coloured population groups and household saving, while a unidirectional causality was found running from the White population group to household saving.

A unified Erdős–Pósa theorem for cycles in graphs labelled by multiple abelian groups
J. Pascal Gollin, Kevin Hendrey, O-joung Kwon, Sang-il Oum, Youngho Yoo, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: In 1965, Erdős and Pósa proved that there is an (approximate) duality between the maximum size of a packing of cycles and the minimum size of a vertex set hitting all cycles. Such a duality does not hold for odd cycles, and Dejter and Neumann-Lara asked in 1988 to find all pairs (l, z) of integers where such a duality holds for the family of cycles of length l modulo z. We characterise all such pairs, and we further generalise this characterisation to cycles in graphs labelled with a bounded number of abelian groups, whose values avoid a bounded number of elements of each group. This unifies almost all known types of cycles that admit such a duality, and it also provides new results. Moreover, we characterise the obstructions to such a duality in this setting, and thereby obtain an analogous characterisation for cycles in graphs embeddable on a fixed compact orientable surface.

The social construction of environmental reality : an analysis of life cycle assessment in the food industry
Pedja Ašanin Gole, Karolina Babič, Vida Sruk, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This article offers a critical sociological-philosophical-communicological review of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method in the context of the food industry. While LCA has been established as a standardized tool for quantifying environmental impacts, this study analyses it not merely as a technical method but as an epistemological construct that actively shapes societal understanding of sustainability. Drawing on the theory of social construction of reality, situated knowledge, and critical theory, the article explores how methodological choices within LCA (e.g., system boundary definition and indicator selection) are not neutral but reflect specific social and political priorities. The findings reveal that standardized LCA approaches oſten lead to epistemological reductionism by homogenizing complex ecological processes and neglecting local contexts and environmental justice issues. Furthermore, the article examines the instrumentalization of LCA in sustainability communication and green marketing, where quantitative data are frequently used to legitimize existing business models rather than to drive systemic change. The discussion emphasizes the need to transcend instrumental rationality and shiſt toward transdisciplinary and deliberative approaches. The article advocates for integrating Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA) and broader Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA) frameworks to address sustainability challenges in the food industry more holistically, incorporating social justice and cultural sensitivity.
