Sacred or sold? : A systems approach to balancing spirituality and commercialisation in faith-based tourism
Tadeja Jere Jakulin, Dane Munro, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper examines the complexity of pilgrimage tourism, with its interdependencies among sacredness, spirituality, and commercialisation at faith-based tourism destinations. We use a Systems Approach to move beyond linear thinking that positions spirituality and commerce as inherently oppositional forces, arguing that pilgrimage destinations function as complex adaptive systems in which spiritual, commercial, and educational objectives interact dynamically. We build Causal Loop Diagrams (CLDs) formed from autoethnographic observation and stakeholder discussions. We present and compare four pilgrimage sites: Lourdes (France), Brezje (Slovenia), Malta, and Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia (Türkiye). The CLD models reveal the dynamics of the pilgrimage sites, the interdependencies, and the interactions among stakeholders (elements of the system). The systems approach demonstrates that successful destinations manage pilgrimage sites as integrated systems in which activities complement and constrain one another through feedback loops. Using a Systems Methodology, the article develops the dynamics of pilgrimage environments and presents a new typology of four pilgrimage (sacred) and commercial (secular) destinations. By advancing knowledge and education, the spiritual-commercial role of the sacred- secular destinations in question offers a different, comprehensive approach to their management.

Multicriteria model of shore excursions sustainability in the frame of system dynamics
Taja Maček, Tadeja Jere Jakulin, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The paper introduces a fresh perspective on the intricate relationship between the destination, guests, and shore excursions. Despite its significance, the shore excursion product has been a relatively unexplored area in academic literature. Our research, therefore, sets out to define the attributes that form the bedrock of the basic sustainability indicators in tourism, with a specific focus on cruise shore excursions. We aim to pinpoint the parameters contributing to the most sustainable shore excursion for cruise passengers. This will be followed by constructing a comprehensive system dynamic structure that reflects the correlations between these parameters and their interdependency, thereby identifying areas that warrant further academic research.

Understanding hospitality as a life quality practice in the field of gastrodiplomacy through systems approach
Tilen Nipič, Tilen Albreht Centrih, Žan Hodžič, Tadeja Jere Jakulin, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Hospitality, which to this day still lacks a clear and unified definition, is often divided by the (non-)commercial aspect concerning the perception of the concept. A social practice beyond the tourism activity itself is an important component of gastronomic diplomacy. It is increasingly used today to raise the image, international recognition and differentiation of a given national entity in the (tourism) world. A clearer definition of the concept is also needed in the case of food diplomacy, as the core meaning is different from that of similar terms, such as culinary diplomacy. The methodological framework for exploring the embeddedness and connectivity of (non-)commercial hospitality with a specific food diplomacy form consists of the autoethnographic method, conducted on the case of the hospitableness symbol in an Arabic-speaking country, which, in conjunction with the theoretical literature review and personal observations and experiences, served as a basis for the creation of a system diagram in the field of soft system of system thinking.

Variations in the population structure of Phlebotomine sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae) in relation to the presence of potential dog hosts
Vladimir Ivović, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The seasonal and circadian population dynamics of Phlebotomine sandflies depend on many environmental factors, especially temperature and humidity. However, the factors that influence fluctuations in species composition are more uncertain. During the regular monitoring of arthropod vectors in the Slovenian coastal region, an interesting change in the population dynamics of these insects was observed, depending on the presence or absence of domestic dogs. To investigate the changes in species composition, we set traps for adult flies at two different locations (Medljan and Cetore) in the Coastal-Karst region (Izola, Slovenia). The collections were carried out in June and July 2017 and 2018. In total, 632 specimens of four species (Phlebotomus papatasi, P. neglectus, P. perniciosus and P. mascittii) were collected in the study area in both years. The females of all sandfly species were examined for the presence of Leishmania parasites in both years, but no Leishmania DNA was detected. The relocation of hunting dogs as potential reservoir hosts from Cetore to another location in early 2018 significantly changed the species composition of the sandflies. Two species, P. neglectus and P. perniciosus, were no longer present at this site. Changes in the species composition and population dynamics of phlebotomine sandflies are probably related to the presence or absence of the Leishmania reservoir host.
