Digital teaching and copyright challenges under EU law : insights from Slovenian academic staff
Nina Krmac, Martina Kovačič, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: In the context of increasingly digitised education, understanding the lawful use of copyrighted material has become essential for academic staff. This study examines university teachers’ awareness of copyright law and its practical application in teaching, particularly in online and distance learning environments. A quantitative survey was conducted among higher education teachers and faculty assistants at a selected Slovenian university using a structured questionnaire. The findings indicate that, although participants generally recognise the importance of copyright law, their practical knowledge—especially in scenario-based teaching situations—varies considerably. More experienced staff reported higher levels of understanding and greater caution in the use of copyrighted material, whereas less experienced staff more frequently reported practices that may fall outside compliant use. Respondents also expressed strong interest in copyright training, yet only a small proportion reported having access to training opportunities within the institution. The study is embedded in the broader legal framework of EU copyright law, in particular Directive (EU) 2019/790, which introduced mandatory exceptions for digital and cross-border teaching. This directive was transposed into Slovenian legislation in 2022. The results underscore the importance of strengthening legal literacy and institutional support mechanisms to facilitate copyright-compliant teaching in digital learning environments.

Universities as Drivers of Social Innovation and Circular Economy : Insights from the University of Trieste
Rubina Romanello, Salvatore Dore, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Universities are main actors capable of fostering social innovation (SI) and advancing circular economy (CE) practices through education, research, community engagement, and internal governance practices. This article examines the University of Trieste (UNITS) as a case study to explore how universities can promote synergies between SI and CE. By analysing in-depth secondary and primary data, our study maps the activities implemented by the University to spread the two paradigms by specifically organizing them in four fields: teaching and student engagement; research and knowledge transfer; third mission and societal outreach; and sustainability practices. Through this mapping activity, this study identifies five benchmark activities that are considered highly impactful in spreading both SI and CE paradigms: the PhD Program in Circular Economy, the RUS Food Working Group, the AReTS water project, the adaptive reuse of the Ex-Ospedale Militare, and the Innovators Community Lab. Our results provide food for thought for policy makers and practitioners, showing some activities that might be replicable among higher education institutions worldwide.

Second homes as an interdisciplinary research topic : a COBISS system based analysis of diploma theses in the Slovenian tertiary education
Miha Koderman, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The article examines second homes as an interdisciplinary research topic by situating them within contemporary conceptualisations of second homes as enduring socio-spatial phenomena through a systematic analysis of the diploma theses in the Slovenian tertiary education. The study, based on a COBISS database, identified 64 students’ bachelor's and master's theses and doctoral dissertations that focus on the topic of second homes. Most of these theses could be classified into six disciplinary domains: architecture and landscape architecture (20), construction–energy technology–geodesy (13), geography (10), design and interior design (9), economy and tourism (5), and ethnology and cultural anthropology (3). The publication of the theses spans over more than four decades, demonstrating the long-term continuity and evolving thematic diversity of second-home research, while the research reveals that second homes represent one of the most enduring, diverse, and interdisciplinary topics. Geography has played a pioneering and sustaining role, providing conceptual and methodological foundations for understanding second homes as spatial processes linked to leisure mobility, landscape transformation, and tourism development, which have influenced research in other disciplines.

STEAM Education for an Innovative Approach to Sustainability : Perspectives of Future Preschool Educators and Teachers
Sanja Partalo, Nevena Vučen Papić, Dragana Malivuk Gak, Dino Hasanagić, 2025, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Opis: Modern education is increasingly viewed through the lens of sustainable development, with a focus on pedagogical practices that foster competent, creative, and socially responsible individuals. The STEAM approach integrates science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics to foster creativity, critical thinking, and transdisciplinary problem-solving among learners. This approach directly contributes to education for sustainable development by enhancing the quality of education, gender equality, and innovation. The paper explores teacher education students’ awareness of STEAM, their attitudes toward its use, and their readiness to apply it in future teaching. A qualitative study was conducted through focus groups with students from various teacher education programmes (natural sciences, social sciences, and arts). Students’ attitudes were analysed, and the perceived benefits, obstacles, and needs for additional support in the implementation of STEAM were identified. The results reveal limited formal education about STEAM, but also a strong motivation among students to apply this approach, particularly in contexts that foster innovation, inclusion, and the connection of theoretical knowledge with real-life situations. Identified challenges include a lack of practical training, insufficient institutional support, and limited resources. Participants highlighted the need for greater integration of STEAM-related content in university curricula. In conclusion, the findings underline the necessity of systemic integration of STEAM education in teacher and preschool educator training programmes, as a key factor in developing sustainable educational practices. Supporting future teachers and educators in acquiring competencies for transdisciplinary learning and innovative teaching may be crucial for advancing education for sustainable development.

Predictors of Preschool Teachers’ Environmental Activities in Kindergarten : A Path to a Sustainable Future
Marina Semiz, 2025, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Opis: In line with the priorities of the United Nations 2030 Agenda and the growing emphasis on competencies for sustainable development in education, early childhood and preschool education are increasingly recognized as critical stages for fostering environmental awareness and designing sustainable curricula. As key educational agents, preschool teachers play a central role in implementing environmental initiatives in kindergartens and nurturing environmentally responsible attitudes and behaviours in young children. This paper presents findings from a study examining the predictors of preschool teachers’ engagement in environmental activities, with a focus on selected personal and sociodemographic variables: years of service, education level, teaching group, and the development of environmental competencies. The study involved a sample of 101 preschool teachers from four administrative districts in Serbia. Data were collected using two instruments: one measuring the development of environmental competencies and another assessing the frequency of environmental activities implemented in kindergartens. The results indicate that teachers’ environmental competencies have a direct and moderately positive influence on their engagement in environmental practices. Strengthening these competencies increases the likelihood of preschool teachers’ involvement in environmentally sustainable practices. Other examined variables did not emerge as significant predictors of participation in environmental initiatives. The multiple regression analysis accounted for approximately 31% of the variance in the frequency of environmental activities, highlighting the need for future research to explore additional predictive factors. Based on the findings, the development and implementation of targeted training and professional development programmes are recommended to further enhance preschool teachers’ environmental competencies.

A study of motivational strategies in arts activities for preschool children in special education units
Barbara Kopačin, Ana Kovačič, Eda Birsa, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Among preschool children with special educational needs, art can open additional pathways to expression, safe exploration and experimentation, and it can foster motivation for creation. The purpose of the study was to determine which strategies educators in developmental departments use to encourage the active participation of preschool children in artistic activities (RQ1), and how motivation is expressed among these children during artistic creation (RQ2). A qualitative methodology was employed, using semi-structured interviews and observations of preschool children during interdisciplinary artistic activities. The results showed that educators use diverse and tailored strategies, such as linking art with play, taking children’s interests into account, and creating a supportive and safe environment. Musical activities proved particularly effective, as they stimulated intrinsic motivation and acted as a bridge to visual/artistic expression. Children’s motivation manifested itself in active engagement, curiosity and persistence, especially in activities that allowed for choice and sensory-adapted approaches. The findings emphasise the importance of individualisation, a process-oriented approach and interdisciplinarity for fostering intrinsic motivation in children with special needs. The study originally examines the integration of musical and visual activities as a strategy for promoting the motivation of preschool children with special needs in developmental departments. In doing so, it opens up a new research and pedagogical area and offers practical guidelines for encouraging motivation through the effective incorporation of interdisciplinary approaches into special-educational practice.

Predictors of sustainable development outcomes in learning spaces of early childhood : Slovenian teachers' perspectives
Jurka Lepičnik-Vodopivec, Adrijana Višnjić-Jevtić, Aleksandra Šindić, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This research examined factors associated with sustainable development outcomes (O-SD) in early childhood learning settings, as perceived by preschool teachers, considering environmental, social, and economic aspects along with contextual elements (child age, eco-program affiliation, teacher experience). Data were gathered through an online survey targeting 114 Slovenian preschool teachers in 2024. The reliability of the instrument was high (α = .942), and principal component analysis confirmed its validity. Correlation and stepwise regression analyses identified the key predictors of O-SD. Education focused on economic sustainability and child age emerged as the primary predictors, accounting for approximately 55% of the variance. While social sustainability was frequently observed in practice, it did not prove to be a significant predictor. The findings highlight the importance of developmentally appropriate and age-sensitive strategies, alongside the intentional inclusion of economic considerations. Limitations include a convenience sample and reliance on self-reported data. Future research should aim to replicate these results in diverse settings and consider mixed-method approaches that incorporate children’s perspectives.
