The effect of gamification-based exercises on footA systematic review and meta-analysis : a posture in children and adolescents with flatfoot:

Opis: BackgroundGamification has emerged as a novel approach in rehabilitation. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of gamification-based exercises on foot posture in children and adolescents with flatfoot. MethodsA systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines, utilizing the PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases to search for original and peer-reviewed articles with selected keywords from inception to July 2025. The quality of the included studies was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute checklist. Statistical analysis was conducted with Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software version 3. To evaluate data heterogeneity, the Q-test and I2 statistic were applied. Egger’s test was used to assess publication bias. ResultsAfter searching the mentioned databases, 2160 articles were found. Finally, seven articles were included in the current review. It was shown that gamification-based exercise had a significant effect, leading to a reduction in navicular drop (95% CI = −1.796 to −0.516, p = 0.000) and an increase in balance scores (95% CI = −1.647 to −0.462, p = 0.000), compared to the passive control groups that did not receive any intervention. However, no significant differences were seen in the Staheli index (95% CI = −3.298 to 0.023, p = 0.053). High heterogeneity was noted in the navicular drop test (95% CI = −2.412 to −0.603, p = 0.001). Egger’s test indicated no statistically significant publication bias for either navicular drop (p = 0.080) or Staheli index (p = 0.210). ConclusionThe results showed that exercise with gamification may be effective in improving foot alignment in children and adolescents. Specifically, positive effects were evident when using the navicular drop test, whereas no significant changes were detected with the Staheli index. However, interpretation should be made cautiously due to the limited number of studies and lack of age or gender stratification.

Slow gait speed is associated with frailty in older adults from nursing homes

Opis: Age-related frailty is a condition of diminished physiological reserves that increases the risk of falls, disability, hospitalisation and mortality. Frailty is usually associated with a lack of physical activity. The aim of this study was to determine whether a frail phenotype can be identified by gait speed. 94 older residents (83.6 ± 7.9 years, 68% women) from Slovenian nursing homes were included as study participants in this cross-sectional study. Frailty was assessed using Fried's Frailty Phenotype Protocol and gait speed was measured over a distance of 4.5 m. We used relative risk to determine whether gait speed was an indicator of frailty. Most of the residents were pre-frail (63%) or frail (16%). Gait speed was significantly lower in the frail group by -0.21 s (U = 331.5; p < 0.001) and a gait speed ≤ 0.457 m/s increased the risk of frailty by 40% (RR=1.40 (CI 1.15-1.70); p=0.0008). We suggest using gait speed as a simple indicator of potential frailty in nursing homes. Persons at risk should be included in a detailed diagnosis and advised on suitable measures. In particular, physical activity seems to prevent the occurrence of frailty

Preserving health : the main motive for exercising in the senior exercise park for a nursing home residents

Opis: Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the motives and attitudes of the Nursing Home residents for exercising in Senior Exercise Park (SEP). Methods: Fifty volunteers (79.3 ± 8.4 years; 80% women; 50% exercising in SEP) were interviewed. Beside the descriptive statistics, a one-sample t-test and a chi-square test were used. Results: The results showed that physical activity (PA) performed by the respondents in the past was not significantly (p>0.05) related to their engagement in the SEP. More than a half of those who had been exercising in the SEP were exercising five or more times per week, which was also significantly (p<0.05) more frequent than the recommended three times per week. The majority of those who exercised in the SEP spent up to 30 minutes for each exercise session. The most frequent motives for exercising in the SEP were medical/health factors, challenge/benefit and curiosity. Among the reasons why some Nursing Home residents had not engaged in the SEP exercise, the most frequently mentioned were health problems, physical difficulties and lack of interest. The main benefit of the SEP exercise was the ability to perform everyday tasks much easier, feeling better and being in a better mood. Discussion and Conclusions: Installation of SEPs in the Nursing Homes is reasonable and could represent an important home’s achievement, as it can significantly contribute to the increase in PA of its residents. Moreover, it can also have an indirect positive effect on their health and overall home\'s atmosphere.

Effectiveness of pilates exercise on quality of life in older adult women : a scoping review

Opis: This scoping review investigates the effects of Pilates exercise interventions on health and quality of life of older adult women. Through a comprehensive examination of existing literature, this review identified key areas where Pilates has shown to significantly benefit physical capabilities such as strength, balance, and flexibility, alongside mental health improvements, including reduced symptoms of depression and anxiety, and enhanced sleep quality. Thus, this scoping review emphasizes a possible role of Pilates in addressing age-related physical and psychosocial challenges, and suggests it as suitable low-impact exercise for promoting healthy aging. Despite the methodological heterogeneity among studies, the overall evidence suggests that Pilates may be a valuable component of geriatric healthcare strategies. The findings advocate for further research to expand the evidence and further guiding healthcare professionals in integrating Pilates into exercise prescriptions for older adult women.

Acute fatiguing effects and biomechanical characteristics of a single bout eccentric quasi-isometric resistance exercise of ankle plantar flexors

Opis: Introduction: Investigation of the eccentric quasi-isometric (EQI) resistance exercise has started in recent years. However, the biomechanical characteristics and fatigue effects of EQI muscle actions in the ankle plantar flexors remain unexplored. This study aimed to compare the biomechanical characteristics of plantarflexion EQIs and post-EQI acute fatigue between two different loading intensities. Methods: Twenty regularly physically active participants (9 men, 11 women) completed 3 sets comprising of a single EQI muscle contraction at 75% and 90% (one intensity for each leg in a random order) of maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) on an isokinetic dynamometer. Outcome variables included total contraction time, torque impulse, angular velocities and range of motion during EQI muscle actions, as well as pre- and post-contraction MVIC measures. Results: The analysis indicated no statistically significant effect of EQI muscle-action on MVIC torque (main effect of time: p = 0.636). There were also no statistically significant differences between EQI muscle actions performed at 75% and 90% MVIC regarding angular velocity (p = 0.244). However, executing EQI muscle contraction at 75% MVIC resulted in statistically significantly larger total contraction time, total torque impulse, and range of motion (p < 0.001) compared to EQI at 90% MVIC. Discussion: These findings suggest that performing EQI contractions at 75% MVIC may be more effective for generating greater mechanical stimulus without inducing significant acute fatigue.
