Gender role reversal in gig economy households : a sociological insight from Southeast Asia with evidence from Pakistan

Opis: The rapid growth of the gig economy and digital platforms is challenging traditional gender roles, particularly in developing countries where structural inequalities continue to shape labor and household dynamics. Despite growing global interest in gender equity and digital inclusion, limited research has examined how gig work, digital access, and women’s income contributions interact to influence household gender dynamics within culturally conservative contexts. This study aimed to investigate the multidimensional impacts of women’s participation in gig work on time use redistribution, intra-household decision making, gender ideology, and role reversal within households in Pakistan. Using a cross-sectional survey design, data were collected from a representative sample of married couples engaged in the gig economy across urban and peri-urban areas of Pakistan. A quantitative analysis was conducted employing a combination of an analysis of variance, ordinal logistic regression, hierarchical multiple regression, and structural equation modeling to evaluate the direct and indirect relationships between constructs. The findings revealed that women’s gig work participation significantly predicted enhanced digital access, greater income contributions, and increased intra-household decision-making power. These, in turn, contributed to a measurable shift in gender ideology toward equality norms and a partial reversal of traditional gender roles, particularly in household labor division. The study concludes that the intersection of economic participation and digital empowerment serves as a catalyst for progressive gender restructuring within households. Policy implications include the need for gender-responsive labor policies, investment in digital infrastructure, and targeted interventions to support empowering women in non-traditional work roles.

Rezilientnost LGBTQ+ mladih v okviru vzgoje in izobraževanja : integrativni pregled literature

Opis: Vzgojno-izobraževalne ustanove posedujejo velik potencial za zmanjševanje vpliva manjšinskega stresa na življenja mladih LGBTQ+. V članku se osredotočamo na rezilientnost mladih LGBTQ+ v okviru šolskega okolja. Opravljen sistematiziran integrativni pregled literature je zajel 57 empiričnih in teoretičnih kosov gradiva. Kvalitativna vsebinska analiza kaže, da lahko vzgojno-izobraževalne ustanove za učenke_ce LGBTQ+ predstavljajo pomemben vir skupnostnih procesov rezilientnosti, medtem ko je njihova vloga pri krepitvi individualnih procesov rezilientnosti manjša. Kot pomembna so se izkazala tudi področja, ki niso neposredno vezana na šolsko polje, a je v okviru le-teh za optimalen razvoj mladih LGBTQ+ zaželena zavzetost šolskega strokovnega osebja.

Information and Communications Technology and Financial Development as Catalysts for Gender Equality in Brazil’s Agricultural Sector

Opis: In this study, we examined the effects of information and communications technology (ICT) and financial development on mitigating gender inequality in Brazil, using autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) approaches, between 1991 and 2022. The ARDL bounds test was employed to find the presence of co-integration within the series of data. Both in the short run and the long run, financial development has a significant negative impact on gender disparity; this means that policies aimed at enhancing women’s financial and consumption services should be promoted in the short run. In the long run, we can conclude that ICT developments lead to a decreasein gender inequalities, which may imply the need for strategic, long-term planning to increase ICT infrastructure, especially in deprived areas. This includes subsidising affordable internet, skills training for women in the ICT field, and promoting women’s participation in the technology industry. In addition, the impact of optimal financial development varies over time; hence, there is a need for flexibility and sustainability in financial development. Policy makers should therefore continue to strengthen and enhance financial inclusion initiatives, as well as regularly follow up on the impact of these initiatives on gender equality.

Gender equality barriers in agriculture and life sciences in Central european universities

Opis: The European Union aims to foster research excellence, among others, by increasing gender equality (GE) in the European research area. The mandatory introduction of gender equality plans (GEP) mobilised universities to assess, target, and monitor GE in different fields of science. A wide range of barriers have been explored in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), characterised by the low participation of women. However, significant obstacles to GE can emerge in relatively more gender‐balanced and, therefore, rarely studied fields, such as agriculture and life sciences (ALS). Experiences can differ in Central and Eastern European countries, characterised by rather traditional gender and family norms. This study explores different stakeholders’ perceptions of the main barriers of GE, with particular attention to ALS. We conducted nine focus groups (82 participants in total) with middle management, academic staff, and students from Czech, Hungarian, and Slovenian universities, aiming to contribute to the revision of their first GEP. Discussions were centred on recruitment, leadership positions, work–life balance, gender‐based violence, sexual harassment, organisational culture, integrating the gender dimension into research and teaching, and institutionalisation of GEPs. Findings revealed that women in ALS face partly similar gender‐based obstacles to their counterparts in less gender‐balanced fields—perceptions of education and career choices, work–life imbalance, and exclusion by recruitment and promotion practices—and also additional ALS‐related challenges of laboratory and fieldwork. Findings highlight the need for institutions to carefully address these areas in their state‐of‐the‐art assessments and develop sector‐specific, tailor‐made GEPs.

Men in educational professions

Opis: Men have traditionally been underrepresented in the teaching profession, impacting the dynamics of the educational system and gender equality in pedagogical work. This study analyzes the social, cultural, and institutional factors influencing men’s decisions to pursue a teaching career and evaluates their professional experiences. The research is based on quantitative data collected through a survey questionnaire and theoretical frameworks such as Bourdieu’s concept of social habitus and Connell’s theory of masculinity. Findings indicate that men in educational professions often face stereotypes, occupational barriers, and different expectations regarding career advancement compared to their female colleagues. The study provides policy recommendations to promote gender diversity in teaching professions.

Nursing students’ views on men in nursing : a gender diversity challenge in the healthcare workforce

Opis: Background Nursing remains a female-dominated profession, with men often facing societal stereotypes and professional challenges that limit their representation. Gender-based misconceptions about caregiving roles and masculinity influence the perception of men in nursing, posing barriers to inclusivity. This study explores nursing students’ perceptions of men in nursing, focusing on the prevalence of gender stereotypes, their potential impact on career decisions and the ethical implications of such misperceptions. Methods A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted on a convenience sample of 184 nursing students in Slovenia. Data were collected through an online questionnaire using the GEMINI (Gender Misconceptions of Men in Nursing) Scale. Internal consistency of the adapted scale was confirmed with a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.859. Results Findings reveal that while some gender stereotypes persist, most students hold neutral or positive attitudes toward men in nursing. The overall median GEMINI score was 33.00, significantly lower than the theoretical median of 51 (p < 0.001), indicating generally low levels of gender-based misconceptions. Postgraduate students reported lower misconceptions (Me = 30.50) compared to undergraduates (Me = 33.50). Male students had a slightly higher median score (34.50) than female students (33.00), suggesting they may hold slightly more stereotypical views. Challenges included societal biases, limited mentorship, and struggles with professional identity, particularly in clinical settings and specialties perceived as traditionally female-dominated. Students with family members in nursing reported a median of 33.50, compared to 33.00 among those without, suggesting a modest exposure effect, although not statistically significant. Conclusions Addressing gender-based misconceptions through education and public awareness is critical for fostering diversity and creating a more inclusive nursing workforce. Future efforts should focus on redefining nursing as a gender-neutral profession. Curricula should incorporate discussions about diversity, gender equity, and professional identity development, fostering inclusivity and reducing stereotypes early in students’ careers. Targeted mentorship programs, increased male representation in nursing leadership, and reframing nursing as a profession that values both technical expertise and emotional intelligence are essential strategies for breaking down persistent stereotypes and improving gender diversity in the field.

Empowering men to take control of their own health : development and validation of the Men’s Response to Colorectal Cancer Screening Scale (MR–CCSS)

Opis: Background/Objectives: Despite the proven effectiveness of colorectal cancer screening, men are less likely to participate than women, with emotional, behavioural and informational barriers contributing to this disparity. The aim of this study was to develop and validate the Men’s Response to Colorectal Cancer Screening Scale (MR–CCSS), a gender-sensitive instrument for measuring key factors that influence the participation of men in colorectal cancer screening. Methods: The scale was developed through a structured process that included qualitative data from focus groups (n = 20 men) and expert review (n = 11 professionals). Initial item pools were refined based on indices of content validity (I-CVI ≥ 0.78; S-CVI/Ave ≥ 0.90), resulting in a 23-item scale. The MR–CCSS was administered to 289 Slovenian men aged 50–74 years, and its psychometric properties were assessed using exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and reliability tests. Results: The EFA revealed a five-factor structure. Together, these factors explained 61.9% of the total variance. The CFA confirmed the robustness of the model (CFI = 0.928, TLI = 0.910 and RMSEA = 0.056). The internal consistency was acceptable to good, with Cronbach’s alpha between 0.665 (factor 4) and 0.833 (factor 5) for the subscales and 0.863 for the total scale. The ROC analysis showed moderate predictive accuracy (AUC = 0.702), with an optimal cut-off value of 92.5 (sensitivity = 0.782 and specificity = 0.509) for participation in screening. Conclusions: The MR–CCSS is a valid and reliable tool for identifying barriers to colorectal cancer screening in men. Its use can serve as a basis for gender-specific interventions, customised health education and strategies to improve screening equity.

Physical self-concept in slovenian adolescents: differences by gender and sports participation

Opis: The aim of the study was to examine the multidimensional physical self-concept among Slovenian adolescent males and females in relation to participation in sports. Three hundred and twenty participants aged between 13 and 18 were included in the study. The Slovenian version of the Physical Self-Description Questionnaire (PSDQ) was used to measure the participants' physical self-concept. The results of the multivariate analysis of variance indicated that sport participants had significantly higher scores on almost all the PSDQ subscales than non-sport participants. Based on the results of the present study, it can be concluded that sports participation is associated with a more positive physical self-concept and greater self-esteem among adolescents. The findings confirm the existence of gender differences in the physical self-concept of adolescents, but it should be stressed that these differences are smaller in sport participants than non-sport participants. The results might be useful to reflect on effective physical education and sports programs in order to promote a more active and healthy lifestyle among adolescents.
