Species–park networks reflect the spatial structure of urban green infrastructure

Opis: As cities expand, natural and semi-natural habitats are increasingly restricted in extent and connectivity, posing major challenges for biodiversity conservation. Urban parks, as nodes of green infrastructure, improve ecological connectivity in the urban landscape, yet their functional role in supporting urban plant communities remains challenging to quantify. This study aimed to investigate whether differences in the functional role of urban parks are reflected by their spatial location within the green infrastructure. We applied a bipartite species-park network approach to assess the role of urban parks in supporting plant species in three historic cities in north-eastern Italy. In 2024, we surveyed 57 parks, recorded vascular plant species in nested plots and measured park attributes including area, distance to the city centre, distance to other parks and tree canopy cover. Species–park networks were used to quantify the functional role of each park through park specialisation, importance, compositional representativeness, and colonisation potential. Statistical models showed that parks further from the city centre supported richer plant communities and hosted species more dependent on individual parks, while parks at intermediate distances from the centre acted as compositional links between parks closer and further from the city centre. Parks with greater tree canopy cover tended to host species that achieved comparatively higher local cover but showed reduced compositional representativeness to other parks. Our results revealed that the functional role of parks in supporting plant communities was strongly associated with their spatial location within the green infrastructure, providing insights for urban biodiversity conservation and landscape planning.

Chemical and bioactivity profiling of extractives from tropical wood residues : Ipe, Merbau, and Jatoba

Opis: Wood residues and by-products from the furniture industry represent an underutilized resource with strong potential for integration into circular economy strategies. Extractives derived from these materials are rich in bioactive compounds, making them attractive candidates for bio-based product development. Although the functional properties of wood extractives are well recognized, their systematic recovery and characterization remain insufficiently explored in the context of green chemistry and sustainability. This study investigated the chemical composition and bioactivity of extractives obtained from industrial residues of three tropical hardwoods: Ipe (Handroanthus spp.), Merbau (Intsia spp.), and Jatoba (Hymenaea courbaril). Extractives were obtained via Pressurized Solvent Extraction (PSE) and characterized using gas chromatography (GC-FID and GC-MS). Ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) was subsequently applied for bioactivity evaluation. Green metrics, including the simple E-factor (sEF) and unit energy (UEC), were calculated to assess basic environmental efficiency. Gravimetric results showed a predominance of hydrophilic fractions (up to 97 % in Merbau), with major constituents including phenolics, fatty acids, flavonoids, and resin acids. Merbau and Jatoba extracts exhibited strong antioxidant capacity (IC50 < 75 μg/mL), while preliminary antimicrobial screening indicated selective activity of Merbau and Ipe against Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis, with Ipe also inhibiting Streptococcus pyogenes. These findings highlight tropical wood residues as renewable sources of bioactive compounds and support their valorisation in sustainable bio-based applications.

An Innovative Lens on Green Tourism : A Narrative Review of Cognitive Dissonance in Sustainable Tourism Development
Kevin Fuchs, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Despite growing concern over sustainability, value–behaviour inconsistencies remain widespread in tourism, highlighting a need for conceptual clarity. Therefore, an inductive thematic synthesis was utilized to analyse how cognitive dissonance is conceptualized, triggered, and resolved across various green tourism contexts. Three thematic main strands emerged: (1) value–behaviour inconsistency, (2) green identity and group influence, and (3) situational constraints and greenwashing. Tourists often maintain a green self-image despite contradictory behaviour, influenced by group norms, destination cues, and infrastructural limitations. The findings highlight that destination managers and marketers must reduce behavioural friction and ensure that sustainability claims are authentic and actionable. Theoretically, the revew contributes a conceptual map of cognitive dissonance in green tourism, highlighting how dissonance emerges and is managed.

Impact of CSR, Green Finance and Green Innovation on Environmental Performance of Banks in India
Maryam Meraj, Mohammed Afzal, Manpreet Kaur, Jahangir Chauhan, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: In an era of growing environmental challenges, the role of banks in promoting sustainability is critical. This study examines how Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), green finance, and green innovation influence the environmental performance of Indian banks. Guided by legitimacy theory and the natural resource-based view, survey data from 379 bank employees were analysed using structural equation modelling. The results reveal that robust CSR initiatives, effective green finance practices, and innovative green strategies significantly enhance banks’ environmental performance. These findings contribute to theoretical understanding and offer practical insights for improving sustainability in the banking sector. The study recommends that banks in emerging economies strengthen internal resources by investing in CSR, adopting green finance, and fostering green innovation to boost environmental performance. Such efforts align with global sustainability goals, positioning banks as key players in environmentalprotection and responsible finance.
