When giftedness masks need : systemic support and organizational conditions for twice-exceptional studentsVanja Riccarda Kiswarday, Tamara Rudolf, Mojca Kukanja-Gabrijelčič, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: This study investigated the identification, understanding, and support of twice-exceptional students—learners demonstrating above-average abilities alongside learning, emotional, or behavioural challenges—in Slovenian primary schools, with a focus on systemic and organizational conditions shaping support practices. A cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted using an online survey administered to 115 educational professionals, including classroom teachers, special education teachers, inclusive pedagogues, and school counsellors. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical methods. Findings indicate that cognitive characteristics of twice-exceptional students are most consistently recognized, whereas socio-emotional and behavioural traits are frequently underestimated. Approximately 50–60% of students remain unidentified, primarily due to insufficient professional training, limited diagnostic tools, and fragmented institutional coordination. Current support practices focus predominantly on remediating learning difficulties, while fostering students’ strengths remains inconsistent. Participants emphasized the need for structured professional development, clearer administrative guidelines, strengthened interdisciplinary collaboration, and more coherent institutional frameworks. The results highlight the importance of systemic and organizational capacity-building in establishing comprehensive, strengths-based support systems, including early identification procedures, differentiated instruction, inter-professional coordination, and the development of national policy guidelines and diagnostic instruments to promote the full potential of twice-exceptional students.

2. A new wildlife monitoring app in Slovenia : a pilot evaluation of data quality and useŽiga Velkavrh, Luka Duniš, Boštjan Pokorny, Hubert Potočnik, Elena Bužan, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Wildlife monitoring is crucial for successful conservation and management of wildlife populations. To support modern wildlife monitoring approaches in Slovenia, we developed SRNA, a nationwide citizen science appli- cation that collects additional metadata on several terrestrial vertebrate species. The app is designed for two groups of citizen scientists, hunters and other nature observers. To foster learning, it features a photo-based wildlife identification quiz and species identification guides. This pilot study evaluated app use and data quality with two aims: (1) to assess users’ ability to identify wildlife species from photos, focusing on taxa expected to be challenging to identify, and to test whether identification accuracy varies across mammal groups; (2) to analyse wildlife observation data submitted through SRNA. Users were successful in identifying several distinctive species but had some difficulty distinguishing between certain mustelids, and between golden jackal and grey wolf, indicating priorities for targeted educational campaigns. Biology-related educational background facilitated identification of mustelids and, to a lesser extent, canids. In its first year, SRNA collected 1633 observations via 742 reports, predominantly of European roe deer. Hunters and nature observers contributed complementary data: differences were observed not only in the number of reported species and amount of data they provided, but also in reporting patterns across biogeo- graphic regions, reporting rates, and the average delay time between encounters and submissions. This study demonstrates that SRNA provides promising complementary data for wildlife monitoring, but also highlights data quality limitations (biases and verification issues) that must be taken into account when using SRNA data.

3. The objective is to explore the extent to which these students are identified in school settings and to examine professional awareness, attitudes, and practices regarding their needs. Due to the complex and often contradictory nature of their profiles, the giftedness of twice-exceptional students is frequently overlooked, especially when behavioral and emotional difficulties obscure their academic potential. Relying primarily on quantitative descriptive methods, the research surveyed education professionals on their knowledge and recognition of twice-exceptionality. The findings reveal a persistent reliance on traditional markers of giftedness, such as measurable academic performance, with insufficient attention paid to behavioral and emotional indicators. The study emphasizes the need for a multidimensional and holistic approach to giftedness identification, combining academic, psychological, and behavioral assessments. It further calls for systematic professional development and institutional adjustments to ensure these students receive adequate support, preventing their marginalization and enabling the full realization of their potential.

8. Microsatellites as a powerful tool for identification of olive (Olea europaea L.) planting material in nurseriesDunja Bandelj, Branka Javornik, 2007, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Microsatellites were applied to confirm the varietal identity of thirteen olive samples from a private nursery. Allelic profiles of samples were compared to genotyped reference varieties from three olive germplasm collections. Genotyping data of two microsatellite loci (ssrOeUA-DCA3 and ssrOeUA-DCA16) allowed discrimination of ten olive samples and the identification of six olive varieties (Koreneiki, Manaki, Tsounati, Kalamon, Ascolana Tenera, Picual). Mislabelling of two olive accessions (Manyanilla de Sevilla, Coratina) was observed and the lack of reference varieties Nostrana Bitontina and Miloelia hindered the identification of two accessions from the nursery. Accessions denominated as Miloelia and Gaiduroelia were of identical genotype. Different allelic profiles of the Frantoio reference variety were observed from two national olive germplasm collections. Microsatellites were found to be a valuable tool for varietal identity confirmation, in nurseries as well as for screening and managing olive germplasm collections.
