Virtual reality and declarative knowledge acquisition in hospitality management education : a classroom-based pilot study

Opis: This study examines the effectiveness of a virtual reality (VR) application as a learning tool in higher hospitality education, focusing on declarative knowledge acquisition and test-based learning outcomes. Conducted as a classroom-based pilot study, it involved a census of undergraduate students enrolled in a restaurant management course (N = 28) and compared VR-supported learning with traditional instruction using printed materials. Declarative knowledge acquisition was assessed using identical multiple-choice pre- and post-tests. Results showed that scores improved across all students. A statistically signifi- cant time × group interaction indicated that the two groups improved at different rates over time. Students who learned using printed materials demonstrated greater improvement than those who used the VR application. The findings suggest that, in its implementation, the VR application did not demonstrate superior test-based knowledge outcomes compared to traditional learning. One possible explanation lies in the type of knowledge assessed: the test focused on declarative and recognition-based knowledge, whereas VR may be more effective for procedural and experience-based learning. The limited interactivity of the early-stage VR application (VR HOTEL v0.9.4) may have also constrained its instructional potential. Overall, the results highlight the importance of aligning VR-based learning activities with learning objectives, instructional design, and assessment methods.

Engaging European local communities in biodiversity genomics research : a five-step framework for scientists

Opis: Biodiversity genomics research can inform conservation, management, and policy, including implementation and monitoring linked to the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF). Still, its societal relevance depends on how research is designed and interpreted with the people who live in, work with, and care for the species and places being studied. Local Communities often hold Local Ecological Knowledge that can improve sampling design, contextualise genomic patterns, and support the translation of findings into practice. Yet, community participation in biodiversity genomics remains limited, partly because researchers may lack practical guidance, training, incentives, or time for engagement. Here, we propose a five-step framework for engaging European Local Communities in biodiversity genomics projects. The framework covers early relationship building, respect for local context and knowledge, co-creation of research roles, transparent benefit sharing, and long-term knowledge transfer. We also outline biodiversity genomics-specific points that require early discussion, including biological sampling, genomic sequence data, genetic variant data, analytical outputs, associated ecological and locality information, Digital Sequence Information, repository deposition, interpretation, and reuse. The framework is intended as a practical starting point for research teams, funders, and community collaborators seeking to make biodiversity genomics research more transparent, locally informed, and useful for conservation decision-making.

Impact of the INDUSAC project through co-creation between students and industry

Opis: The Horizon Europe inDUsaC project, coordinated by the Jožef Stefan Institute in Ljubljana, Slovenia, introduced an innovative mechanism for facilitating knowledge transfer between companies and students from diverse disciplinary backgrounds. During the project, students and re searchers across Europe were given the opportunity to address compa ny-defined challenges through short-term co-creation projects lasting between four and eight weeks. In total, 303 individuals, organised into 159 international teams, success fully completed their projects, with students receiving financial compen sation for their contributions. This paper provides an overview of the addressed company challenges, which spanned a wide range of domains, including health, education and nutrition; modern living; products and accessories; energy and environment; industrial processes and engineer ing; and business solutions. This diversity demonstrates the breadth of the project’s impact, with ap proximately half of the participating companies being small enterprises with up to 10 employees, and with strong participation from eU Widen ing countries. By presenting 159 successful collaborations that generated valuable outputs for companies and enabled students to acquire practical skills, the inDUsaC project demonstrates: (i) tangible social impact; (ii) the feasibility of an effective and attractive mechanism that provides compa nies with innovative ideas while offering students meaningful incentives to gain experience and strengthen their professional networks; and (iii) the critical role of a public research organisation in facilitating such exchanges.

Enhancing knowledge and technology transfer : determinants and indicators of successful university–industry collaboration

Opis: Both universities and companies create value and innovation to maintain their position and remain competitive. Different, but still similar, with two goals that are shared. With their collaboration, they can enhance their pursuit of sustainability and as well corporate social responsibility by creating and delivering value and thus contributing to the well-being of society. This paper thus examines the determinants and indicators of successful university–industry collaboration (UIC) in the context of knowledge and technology transfer. The purpose of the research is to identify key factors that drive effective UIC and to establish measurable indicators for evaluating the performance of this collaboration. The paper aimed to understand not only what drives UIC but also how to measure its effectiveness. So, an exploratory, theory-building approach, adopting a systematic literature review is applied. By focusing on the determinants and measurable outputs of UIC, the paper provides insights into the strategic importance of measuring knowledge and technology transfer for a wide range of stakeholders involved in it. UIC for universities is a part of their third mission and their CSR, while with respect for companies, UIC is a result of practicing open innovation and pursuing corporate social responsibility. While consolidating these dimensions, the study also develops a holistic input–output indicator framework that not only clarifies how collaboration is initiated and structured but also how it can be evaluated in practice.

Supporting Knowledge Transfer and Social Impact : The SSHA Impact Fund of the University of Ljubljana

Opis: In recent years, the global research and higher education landscape has shifted from focusing solely on scientific excellence to demonstrating societal impact. Universities are now expected not only to generate knowledge but also to ensure that it contributes to social, cultural, environmental, and economic development. European and national strategies alike emphasise the role of research in addressing major societal challenges and shaping a sustainable, inclusive future. Within this context, the University of Ljubljana has recognised the importance of supporting researchers in achieving societal impact. Beyond its traditional missions, the University of Ljubljana has strengthened its efforts in knowledge transfer – the process of translating research results into societal benefits. This reflects a growing awareness that universities carry not only intellectual but also social responsibility to engage, co-create, and contribute to community wellbeing. The article examines how the University of Ljubljana supports researchers in enhancing societal impact, focusing on strategic frameworks, institutional mechanisms, and practical initiatives. It highlights the SSHA Impact Fund, established in 2024 as an innovative tool for promoting socially responsible research. The analysis draws on experience from the Knowledge Transfer Office within the Social Sciences, Humanities, and Arts (SSHA) and discusses key challenges and emerging best practices in this developing field.

Social Innovation at Universities : Mapping Roles, Research Content Directions, Challenges and Implications

Opis: Social innovation has emerged as a transformative paradigm as well as a potential solution for addressing complex societal challenges, be it from the issues of inequality, better living conditions, to climate change, and digitalisation. However, despite the growing academic as well as also political attention, its theoretical framing and institutional embedding remain fragmented. Universities, through their roles as knowledge producers, educators, and civic actors, hold one of the central and unique positions in shaping social innovation ecosystems. This article explores how universities can contribute to social innovation, what institutional and systemic barriers limit their engagement, and how they can strategically integrate social innovation within their missions. Combining bibliometric analysis and qualitative synthesis, this paper maps the evolution of research on this topic, identifies key conceptual trends, and outlines pathways for future orientations. The findings reveal that while universities act as important catalysts for societal transformation, their systemic impact remains constrained by structural and also political inertia. The paper concludes with recommendations on how to strengthen social innovation capacities of the universities roles and missions for social innovation.

Type-based computation of knowledge graph statistics

Opis: We propose a formal model of a knowledge graph (abbr. KG) that classifies the ground triples into sets that correspond to the triple types. The triple types are partially ordered by the sub-type relation. Consequently, the sets of ground triples that are the interpretations of triple types are partially ordered by the subsumption relation. The types of triple patterns restrict the sets of ground triples, which need to be addressed in the evaluation of triple patterns, to the interpretation of the types of triple patterns. Therefore, a schema graph of a KG should include all triple types that are likely to be determined as the types of triple patterns. The stored schema graph consists of the selected triple types that are stored in a KG and the complete schema graph includes all valid triple types of KG. We propose choosing the schema graph, which consists of the triple types from a strip around the stored schema graph, i.e., the triple types from the stored schema graph and some adjacent levels of triple types with respect to the sub-type relation. Given a selected schema graph, the statistics are updated for each ground triple t from a KG. First, we determine the set of triple types stt from the schema graph that are affected by adding a triple t to an RDF store. Finally, the statistics of triple types from the set stt are updated.

Upskilling older employees in the artificial intelligence era

Opis: Research Question (RQ): What is the effect of new technologies, with an emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI), on the need to upskill older employees (50+ years). Purpose: The purpose of the research was to carry out a systematic literature review of existing research in the field of the effect of AI on the upskilling needs of older employees. Method: We performed a systematic literature review across six academic search engines: ProQuest, Emerald, Sage Journals, Springer, Research Gate, and Google Scholar. Results: Artificial intelligence is significantly transforming the labor market, as it requires constant adaptation to new skills and knowledge. AI has a significant effect on older employees, who are exposed to greater challenges due to a possible lack of digital skills and sensitivity to change. In this context, training and further education are key mechanisms to ensure that skills match the requirements of the work environment and the labor market. Organizations must quickly adapt to changing requirements by creating a culture of lifelong learning that encourages seniors and other employees to improve. Training programs must be based on the specific needs and challenges faced by older employees. Organization: The research emphasizes the importance of training older employees in the age of AI and encourages organizations to create a culture of lifelong learning as part of the organization's strategic directions and goals. Society: The importance of research for society is reflected in the insight into the involvement of all age groups in the possibility of improving knowledge, skills, and attitudes towards the use of modern technologies. Organizations and society itself bear the social responsibility to enable older employees to successfully integrate into the work environment in the AI era. Originality: The research addresses the need to improve the skills of a specific age group in the age of AI, where it simultaneously highlights the importance of fostering a culture of lifelong learning in a rapidly changing world. The research findings provide guidelines for policymaking in the field of training on the national level in the context of an aging workforce and new technologies. Limitations/further research: The literature review was limited to six publicly available databases. In the article, older employees were considered as people in the labor process older than 50 years. We must emphasize that older employees differ from each other in terms of education, economic, social, and other circumstances. Further research should investigate the effect of new technologies regarding the specific circumstances mentioned in this age group.

Effective Technology-Enhanced Learning Methods of Increasing Knowledge and Practical Skills among Nursing Students

Opis: The utilisation of Technology-Enhanced Learning (TEL) methods in the field of nursing education provides students with the opportunity to engage in riskfree practice of clinical skills through the utilisation of interactive simulations and virtual laboratories. The incorporation of digital tools, such as e-learning modules and online assessments, facilitates enhanced knowledge retention and offers flexible learning opportunities that are tailored to the individual learning pace of the student. This literature review aims to summarize, analyze, and evaluate the effectiveness of TEL methods for developing knowledge and practical skills among nursing students. This literature review will assess methods utilized to enhance TEL skills among nursing students. Scientific publications in English languages published between 2013 and 2023 will be analyzed. Searches will be conducted in electronic databases including PubMed, Wiley library, SCOPUS, and Web of Science. The findings of seven studies were subjected to analysis. The findings of the review suggest that the utilisation of TEL learning methodologies has a beneficial impact on the skills and knowledge acquisition of nursing students. The integration of TEL educational interventions into nursing education has been demonstrated to be an effective approach for developing the knowledge and competencies of nursing students. The incorporation of digital educational interventions in nursing education has been demonstrated to result in higher knowledge scores and a reduction in cognitive load, thereby enabling students to engage more fully with the learning material.
