1. Effects of different lifting strategies during resistance training on lower body function in untrained adult women : a comparison between 6-weeks of 10% velocity loss and standard resistance trainingMatic Sašek, Hana Golob, Nejc Šarabon, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Introduction: This study investigated whether velocity-based resistance training provides additional benefits to lower limb performance compared to standard exercise execution. Methods: Twenty untrained adult women (37–55 years) were randomly assigned to two resistance training groups to perform resistance training with three sets of four lower body exercises per week for 6 weeks. The number of repetitions and lifting velocity differed between the groups. One group performed lower body exercises with maximal intent and a 10% velocity loss threshold termination (VB10%; n = 10), while the other group performed 10 repetitions at a standard 1:2 s concentric:eccentric tempo (STD; n = 10). The number of repetitions was recorded during the sessions. Before and after the intervention, power, muscular endurance and dynamic stability of the lower limbs were assessed using the mean propulsive velocity (MPV) and power (MPP) at 70% one-repetition maximum in the squat and deadlift, the Y-balance test (YBT) and the 30-second sit-to-stand test (STS), respectively. A two-way analysis of variance was used to assess the effects of time, group, and their interaction. Results: The difference between 10 repetitions in the STD and repetitions in the VB10% was assessed using a one-sample t-test. Both groups significantly improved MPP, MPV, YBT and STS [mean difference (MD) ≥5.4%; effect size (ES) ≥0.6]. Although 2.5–2.7 less repetitions were performed in VB10%, the improvements in MPP and MPV were slightly greater (ES ≥ 1.2 vs. ≥ 0.8). Conversely, STS and YBT improved more in STD (ES ≥ 0.4 vs. ≥ 1.0). Discussion: Regardless of the lifting method used, the training intervention improved lower limb power, muscular endurance and dynamic stability, indicating that resistance training is an effective strategy for enhancing these capacities in untrained adult women. Using 10% threshold may be a more time-efficient strategy for improving lower-limb power in this population and could represent a promising approach for mitigating early declines in power over time. 2. The impact of hormonal contraceptives on skeletal muscle hypertrophyNevena Markov, Matevž Arčon, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Female reproductive hormones such as progesterone and estrogen play an important role in the body as they orchestrate functions of numerous cells including skeletal muscle cells. Onset of menses marks the beginning of reproductive life, whereas menopause marks its cessation. We distinguish three phases of the 28-day menstrual cycle namely follicular, ovulatory and luteal phases. The follicular phase is characterised by marked increases in estrogen, which triggers ovulation. During this phase, estrogen peaks, whereas progesterone levels are low. Following ovulation, the luteal phase commences marked by high progesterone levels and reduced estrogen. Indeed, these periodic fluctuations in reproductive hormones may affect rates of muscle protein synthesis and hence hinder sought adaptations such as skeletal muscle hypertrophy in female athletes. With the introduction of hormonal contraceptives, female athletes were able to have ameliorate the negative effects of the menstrual cycle by reducing menstrual cramping and bleeding. Hormonal contraceptives are constituted of a single or multiple synthetic hormones namely estrogen and progestin. Nevertheless, the impact of hormonal contraceptives on skeletal muscle hypertrophy remains elusive. In this review, we aim to present the potential implications of hormonal contraceptives on skeletal muscle hypertrophy. 3. Tracking pyrethroid resistance in arbovirus mosquito vectors : mutations I1532T and F1534C in Aedes albopictus across EuropeVerena Pichler, Vera Valadas, Mustafa M. Akiner, Georgios Balatsos, Carlos Barceló, Maria-Louise Borg, Jeremy Bouyer, Daniel Bravo-Barriga, Ruben Bueno, Beniamino Caputo, Katja Adam, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Background With the worldwide spread of the Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, the number of autochtho‑ nous cases of exotic arboviral diseases, such as dengue or chikungunya, is increasing in temperate regions. In Europe, pyrethroids are the only insecticides allowed for the abatement of adult mosquitoes and are thus crucial for limiting ongoing arbovirus transmission. Despite this and the report of resistance rising in vector populations worldwide, information on the pyrethroid resistance status of vector populations and knowledge on resistance mechanisms is widely lacking. Genotyping of knockdown resistance (kdr) mutations situated within the target site of pyrethroids, i.e., the voltage‑gated sodium channel (VGSC), and associated with pyrethroid resistance, is a cost‑effective approach to investigate the spread of resistance in a population. Herein, we describe the European‑wide distribution of two kdr mutations, i.e., I1532T and F1534C, in Ae. albopictus and evaluate their co‑occurrence with another well‑characterized kdr mutation, V1016G. Methods Genotyping of the kdr mutation F1534C was performed by allele‑specific PCR for 1732 Ae. albopictus specimens sampled in 19 European countries; for a subset of 419 specimens mutation I1532T was also genotyped by sequencing. For all samples, information on mutation V1016G was available, allowing evaluation of the co‑occur‑ rence of kdr alleles. Results Mutation 1534C was detected in nine sites from six countries at an overall frequency close to 5%. High‑ est frequencies per site were detected in Cyprus (84%) and Greece (45%). Allele 1532 T was identified in 11 sites from 7 countries at frequencies ranging from 4% to 25% per site. Co‑occurrence of different kdr alleles (1534C, 1532 T and 1016G) was observed in nine sampling sites from seven countries. Conclusions The present study offers the first map of the occurrence of the major Ae. albopictus kdr alleles across Europe and highlights a differential distribution of the two alleles most strongly associated with pyrethroid resistance, 1016G and 1534C. Our findings also point to the need for enhancing resistance monitoring in the East‑ ern Mediterranean region, where the two mutations are shown to exist in geographically close areas, with the risk of emergence of highly resistant double mutants. 4. Within-session reliability and comparison in resisted sprint performance with the 1080 Sprint between belt and harness attachment pointsMatic Sašek, Nicola Reiner Volk, Nejc Šarabon, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The application of resistance over the shoulder or hips during resisted sprints could influence performance outcomes but has not been thoroughly investigated. This study examined the within-session reliability of sprint performance measures and compared the outcomes of 1080 Sprint device between belt (hips) and harness (shoulders) attachment. Twelve student-athletes completed three 20 m sprints with resistance equivalent to 25% of body mass (14.0 to 24.7 kg). Sprint split times (5 m, 10 m, 15 m, 20 m), peak velocity, and distance at peak velocity were recorded with 1080 Sprint. Within-session reliability was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC3.1) and coefficients of variation (CV), while differences in performance were analysed using paired t-tests and effect sizes (ES). Reliability was excellent for all variables (ICC3.1≥ 0.93; CV ≤ 3.08 %) except distance at peak velocity, which showed poor reliability (ICC3.1≥ 0.32; CV ≥ 17.2 %). Sprint times and peak velocity were faster with the belt attachment (ES ≥ 0.93), while peak velocity was reached earlier with the harness attachment (ES = 0.65). Both attachment points provided reliable measurements, but the belt consistently resulted in faster 20 m sprint performance. Coaches and practitioners should consider these differences when assessing resisted sprint performance or prescribing training to ensure consistent and individualized loading strategies Ključne besede: resisted sprint, resistance, sprint performance, speed assessment Objavljeno v RUP: 30.12.2025; Ogledov: 226; Prenosov: 0

5. The Mapuche People in Vaca Muerta, Argentina: Between Criminalization and Anti-Extractivist Resistance AestheticsMelisa Cabrapan Duarte, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: In this paper, I contextualize the conflicts that characterize Vaca Muerta in northern Patagonia, Argentina, a geological formation of unconventional hydrocarbon reservoirs that over the past decade has become an area of national and international energy interest. However, social discontent, particularly from the Mapuche communities pre-existing in the area and forming the Regional Coalition Xawvn Ko of the Mapuche Confederation of Neuquén, has led these communities to express their epudiation of the oil companies and the governments in power due to the consequences of fracking: environmental damage, territorial dispossession, the criminalization of the Mapuche people, and the impoverishment of the local society. In this context, I examine the persecution of these communities and the increase in repressive measures under the current government. I also describe and analyse the inter-communitarian resurgence and resistance and how these create new political aesthetics to confront extractivism. 6. Eccentric quasi-isometric exercise produces greater impulse with less pain than isokinetic heavy–slow resistance exercise in ankle plantar flexors : quasi-randomized controlled trialLuka Križaj, Žiga Kozinc, Nejc Šarabon, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Recently, there has been growing interest in optimizing exercise protocols in sports training and rehabilitation, with particular attention to eccentric quasi-isometric (EQI) contractions, which involve maintaining joint position until isometric failure and then resisting the subsequent eccentric phase. Evidence directly comparing EQI with other contraction modes remains scarce. This quasi-randomized controlled trial examined the short-term effects of EQI versus isokinetic heavy–slow resistance (IHSR) exercises on ankle plantar flexors, focusing on pain, range of motion (RoM), and strength performance. Thirty-two physically active participants were allocated to EQI (n = 16) or IHSR (n = 16) groups and assessed at baseline, immediately post-exercise, and 24 and 48 h later. Both groups performed three exercise sets with 3 min breaks. The protocols were designed to approximate matched loading, based on preliminary testing. Nevertheless, the EQI group achieved a significantly greater total impulse (p = 0.028), a shorter time under tension (p = 0.001), and lower effort scores (p < 0.001). Group × time analysis revealed less decline in maximal voluntary isometric contraction torque (p = 0.002; η2 = 0.16), as well as lower general (p < 0.001; η2 = 0.32) and activity-related pain (p < 0.001; η2 = 0.32) in the EQI group, with no significant differences in dorsiflexion RoM (p = 0.893). In conclusion, EQI produced a higher torque impulse while inducing less fatigue and post-exercise pain than IHSR, suggesting it may be a more efficient loading strategy for the ankle plantar flexors. The results contribute to the understanding of contraction-specific efficiency, and may inform the design of future training and rehabilitation protocols targeting the ankle plantar flexors.
