1. Perception of safety climate among nursing staff in operating rooms in Slovenia : a cross-sectional analytical studyIgor Karnjuš, Margareta Kotar Bunderla, Patrik Pucer, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Objectives (1) To determine the perceived level of safety climate among nursing staff in operating rooms (ORs) in Slovenia; (2) to investigate correlations and differences between professional position, length of service, healthcare level and perceived safety climate and (3) to identify independent predictors of overall and domain-specific safety climate perceptions. Design A cross-sectional non-experimental quantitative analytical study. Setting Surgical departments in 14 hospitals across Slovenia between June 2024 and November 2024. Participants A total of 169 OR and anaesthesia nurses employed in surgical departments with a minimum of 1 year of work experience. Measures Self-reported perceived safety climate in the OR using the Slovenian version of the Safety Attitudes Questionnaire–OR (SAQ-OR). Results Positive attitudes towards safety varied substantially across the SAQ-OR domains. The lowest proportion of positive responses was found in Perceptions of Management (7.7%; mean=45.89, 95% CI (42.92 to 48.87)), while the highest was recorded in Job Satisfaction (57.4%; mean=75.24, 95% CI (72.86 to 77.62)). OR nurses reported a more positive overall safety climate than anaesthesia nurses (mean difference=0.21, 95% CI (0.07 to 0.35)). Regression analyses identified the following independent predictors: professional nursing role for the global SAQ-OR score (β=−0.21, p=0.007) and institutional tenure for Stress Recognition (β=−0.23, p=0.004). The Perceptions of Management domain was predicted by professional role (β=−0.17, p=0.033) and institutional tenure as a positive driver (β=0.16, p=0.041). Conclusions The safety climate among nursing staff working in Slovenian ORs was perceived as moderately positive, with notable variation across SAQ-OR domains and professional groups. Professional role and institutional tenure were identified as independent predictors of safety climate perceptions. 2. Practical protocols for improving safety and sustainability in multidisciplinary research laboratoriesWojciech Pajerski, Flavien Ginioux, Amina Selmanović, Anna Malgorzata Sandak, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Small and medium-sized multidisciplinary research laboratories often lack specialized systems for chemical safety and sustainability. In many countries, including those with limited or no national regulations for small-scale chemical users, this creates additional challenges for implementing effective safety practices. As a result, chemical inventories are often fragmented and insufficiently managed, increasing safety risks. Additionally, solvents and empty containers are often discarded, despite their potential for recovery and reuse. This article presents a low-cost, user-friendly protocol comprising three complementary components: Shared Chemical Inventory, Solvent Reuse Strategy and Container Repurposing guide designed to improve laboratory safety and sustainability in settings where formal regulations are limited or absent. The protocol was designed for direct accessibility without additional infrastructure or financial investments. Implemented at a medium-sized research institute located in Europe, it achieved an almost 30% reduction in the total chemical waste mass. With its integration in onboarding and simple training modules, the protocol improves safety compliance, reduces cost of virgin solvents, and minimizes chemical waste disposal. Relying on existing laboratory resources demonstrates that principles of responsible chemistry can be effectively applied at the laboratory level without financial investments through voluntary, culturally embraced practices, even in the absence of extensive regulation. Its scalability and adaptability suggest broad relevance for other small- and medium-sized research laboratories, including teaching laboratories and start-ups, contributing to both chemical safety and sustainability goals. 3. Predictable artificial intelligenceLexin Zhou, Pablo A. M. Casares, Fernando Martínez-Plumed, John Burden, Ryan Burnell, Lucy Cheke, Cèsar Ferri, Alexandru Marcoci, Behzad Mehrbakhsh, Yael Moros-Daval, Danaja Rutar, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Many areas of artificial intelligence, and machine learning in particular, aim at being probably correct, i.e., valid on average, rather than pursuing the idealistic goal of being provably valid for all inputs. However, AI systems could still be predictably valid, such as an imperfect robot deliverer for which we can reliably and precisely predict the task instances for which it is correct and safe, its valid operating range. “Predictable AI” is a nascent research area that explores ways of anticipating key validity indicators (e.g., performance, safety) of present and future AI ecosystems. We argue that achieving predictability is crucial for fostering trust, liability, control, alignment and safety of AI, and thus should be prioritised over performance. We formally characterise predictability, explore its most relevant components, illustrate what can be predicted, describe alternative candidates for predictors, as well as the trade-offs between maximising validity and predictability. To illustrate these concepts, we bring an array of illustrative examples covering diverse ecosystem configurations. “Predictable AI” is related to other areas of technical and non-technical AI research, but have distinctive questions, hypotheses, techniques and challenges. This paper aims to elucidate them, calls for identifying paths towards a landscape of predictably valid AI systems and outlines the potential impact of this emergent field.
