Second homes as an interdisciplinary research topic : a COBISS system based analysis of diploma theses in the Slovenian tertiary education
Miha Koderman, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The article examines second homes as an interdisciplinary research topic by situating them within contemporary conceptualisations of second homes as enduring socio-spatial phenomena through a systematic analysis of the diploma theses in the Slovenian tertiary education. The study, based on a COBISS database, identified 64 students’ bachelor's and master's theses and doctoral dissertations that focus on the topic of second homes. Most of these theses could be classified into six disciplinary domains: architecture and landscape architecture (20), construction–energy technology–geodesy (13), geography (10), design and interior design (9), economy and tourism (5), and ethnology and cultural anthropology (3). The publication of the theses spans over more than four decades, demonstrating the long-term continuity and evolving thematic diversity of second-home research, while the research reveals that second homes represent one of the most enduring, diverse, and interdisciplinary topics. Geography has played a pioneering and sustaining role, providing conceptual and methodological foundations for understanding second homes as spatial processes linked to leisure mobility, landscape transformation, and tourism development, which have influenced research in other disciplines.

Slow gait speed is associated with frailty in older adults from nursing homes
Martin Šporin, Dorjana Zerbo Šporin, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Age-related frailty is a condition of diminished physiological reserves that increases the risk of falls, disability, hospitalisation and mortality. Frailty is usually associated with a lack of physical activity. The aim of this study was to determine whether a frail phenotype can be identified by gait speed. 94 older residents (83.6 ± 7.9 years, 68% women) from Slovenian nursing homes were included as study participants in this cross-sectional study. Frailty was assessed using Fried's Frailty Phenotype Protocol and gait speed was measured over a distance of 4.5 m. We used relative risk to determine whether gait speed was an indicator of frailty. Most of the residents were pre-frail (63%) or frail (16%). Gait speed was significantly lower in the frail group by -0.21 s (U = 331.5; p < 0.001) and a gait speed ≤ 0.457 m/s increased the risk of frailty by 40% (RR=1.40 (CI 1.15-1.70); p=0.0008). We suggest using gait speed as a simple indicator of potential frailty in nursing homes. Persons at risk should be included in a detailed diagnosis and advised on suitable measures. In particular, physical activity seems to prevent the occurrence of frailty

Linking older adults’ psychosocial well-being with objective and perceived environments in Slovenia
Mateja Erce Paoli, Michael David Burnard, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Background: Europe’s aging population faces resource loss, loneliness, and social isolation, making psychosocial well-being a priority. A well-designed environment can help compensate for lost resources, while poor design may harm health, highlighting environmental quality as key to successful aging. Aim: The aim of our study was to evaluate the link between psychosocial well-being, and the built environment. Method: Participants from three retirement homes in Slovenia filled in the World Health Organization Wellbeing Index, the Brief Sense of Community, the Lubben Social Network Scale, the University of California Los Angeles Loneliness Scale, and the short version of the Social Production Function Instrument with the assistance of a researcher. Additionally, the built environ- ment was objectively assessed using the EVOLVE tool and subjectively assessed by participants using a custom scale. Structural equation modeling was used to examine paths between the environ- ment and wellbeing. Results: The findings showed a statistically significant indirect effect of well-being on the perceived environment, while no indirect effects were found between the objective and per- ceived environment or well-being. However, specific objectively measured environmental factors, such as acceptability, features for sensory and dementia support, and perceived accessibility and aesthetic environmental attributes significantly affect well-being. Conclusion: These findings highlight the need to prioritize well-being in urban planning for aging populations. Beyond basic needs like safety, high- level needs like aesthetics, sensory support, and accessibility should be emphasized. Enhancing well- being through these factors may be effective when designing or modifying physical environments. Accessible, sensory-friendly, and dementia-supportive designs can further support healthy aging.
