Integration of Lean and Six Sigma Methodology for Process Improvement
Dušan Gošnik, 2025, objavljeni znanstveni prispevek na konferenci

Opis: Lean (L) and Six Sigma (SS) are among the most popular process improvement methodologies in organisations. This research reveals, how can L and SS methodologies be integrated. Integration of L and SS can improve outcome of process improvement initiatives, improve process efficiency and improve also thus related organisational performance. L enables SS speed such as faster cycles of experimentation and learning and on the other hand SS enables L quality such as less defects and less time for rework. Despite well-known benefits of LSS, many organisations are still not using LSS. Based on literature review we analyse and present the latest findings and research results about LSS use in organisations including various perspectives such as; how to integrate L and SS, impact on process improvement and organisation performance, in which stages of SS projects can L be integrated the most efficiently, what to consider at LSS use to achieve better process efficiency in organisations. Suggestions for more efficient LSS use in organisations include; interaction of L and SS at process improvement actions already in the project planning phase, the use of LLS based on an available resources and top management support. Experiences about LSS use from organisations Slovenia are presented. Research results dependent on the secondary literature review and limited data about LSS use and experiences from Slovenia. The results of this study have a great value to researchers, LSS practitioners, managers in organisations during planning and scheduling LSS projects.

Experiences and perceptions of a 12-week combined exercise and dietary supplement program for individuals with knee osteoarthritis : a qualitative focus group study
Tina Čeh, Jernej Završnik, Nejc Šarabon, Mirko Prosen, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Background Exercise program and dietary supplements are commonly used in the conservative management of knee osteoarthritis (KOA) and have both been shown to reduce pain and improve physical function. Combining these approaches may offer additive benefits or introduce specific adherence challenges from the patient perspective. The combination of structured exercise with dietary supplements remains underexplored, especially through qualitative approaches. This study aims to investigate the lived experiences, perceived benefits, challenges, and motivational factors among participants of a targeted exercise program combined with dietary supplementation. Methods A qualitative study design with three focus group was used to explore participants overall experiences, motivational factors, and barriers to participation immediately after program. The sample included 16 older adults with KOA (Kellgren–Lawrence grade 1–3, 14 women and 2 men). Two moderators facilitated each focus group using topic guide. Data were analysed using inductive thematic analysis. Results Six main themes were identified: (1) recognized effects of exercise, (2) motivators and barriers to exercise, (3) group exercise and its impact on daily life, (4) recognized health care limitations, (5) experiences and practices of dietary supplement use, and (6) perspectives on program continuation and expansion. Conclusions Participants’ experiences with the combined exercise and dietary supplementation program for KOA highlighted the importance of social support, professional guidance, and self-motivation. Barriers included physical limitations, time constraints, and psychological challenges, while reported benefits included reduced pain, improved mood, and enhanced social engagement. Participants’ tendency to perceive exercise and supplementation as separate components indicates that, in practice, combined interventions may function as parallel rather than integrated strategies unless explicitly framed and supported as a unified approach

Opis: Helichrysum italicum (Roth) G. Don (Asteraceae) is a valuable medicinal and aromatic plant native to a variety of habitats across the Mediterranean region. However, genetic studies of this morphologically diverse species have been limited by the scarcity of species-specific DNA markers. To address this limitation, we generated the first de novo transcriptome assembly comprising 24,806 transcripts from young shoots containing leaves and flowers, developed EST-SSR markers, and evaluated their utility in population genetic analysis. Seventy-eight primer pairs were designed, of which 23 showed successful amplification, polymorphism, and transferability to Helichrysum litoreum Guss. and Helichrysum arenarium (L.) Moench. A subset of 12 EST-SSRs was used to genotype 270 individuals from 12 natural populations of H. italicum in Corsica (France), along with one outgroup population from Croatia. The polymorphic information content ranged from 0.250 to 0.796, and Shannon’s information index ranged from 0.588 to 1.843, indicating the markers’ suitability for popu- lation genetic studies. Analysis of molecular variance revealed that 15% of the total genetic variation was attributable to differences among populations. Discriminant analysis of principal components and Bayesian clustering in STRUCTURE identified distinct popu- lation clusters corresponding to geographic locations. Notably, the southernmost coastal populations were clearly differentiated from the others.

Interlaboratory study of automated sorption measurements in wood : method for correcting systematic errors with the commonly used 0.002% min[sup] -1 stop criterion

Opis: Many studies that use an automated sorption balance to determine a water vapor sorption isotherm for wood collect data until the moisture content change is less than or equal to 0.002% min−1 (20 µg g−1 min−1). This stop criterion has been claimed to give errors in equilibrium moisture content (EMC) predictions of less than 0.001 g g−1 but over the past 10 years, studies have shown that the actual errors can be greater than 0.01 g g−1 because the measurements are stopped well before equilibrium is reached. Despite the large errors associated with this stop criterion, it remains popular due to the speed at which isotherms can be measured. This paper utilizes data from a worldwide interlaboratory study on automated sorption balances to develop a correction method for estimating EMC of western larch (Larix occidentalis Nutt.) from the moisture content corresponding to the 20 µg g−1 min−1 criterion. The study uses data from 72 relative humidity absorption steps with hold times of 7–10 days from 21 different laboratories and eight different instrument models. EMC is defined based on the inherent mass stability of automated sorption balances determined in the first part of this interlaboratory study. On average the sorption process is less than 80% complete when the 20 µg g−1 min−1 criterion is reached, resulting in a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.006 g g−1. The correction equation for estimating EMC reduces the MAE to 0.001 g g−1. The analysis presented in this paper, along with the correction equation, can be considered for certain use cases to reduce systematic errors and shorten measurement times.

Enhancing crisis response efficiency through ICT : a Delphi study on operational and decision-making improvements in mass casualty incidents
Primož Režek, Boštjan Žvanut, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The potential of information and communication technology (ICT) to improve coordination and decision-making during the training and operational phases of mass casualty incidents (MCIs) has not yet been sufficiently explored. This three-round Delphi study investigates whether ICT use in MCIs can enhance decision-making and increase victim survival rates. The study was conducted from 10 February to 20 September 2024, with 25 international experts from academia, clinical practice, and health informatics. The results were summarised using a SWOT analysis, confirming ICT's perceived potential in MCI management. The analysis revealed a critical asymmetry: while the strengths and opportunities were mainly associated with technical factors (e.g. the effectiveness of drones, global positioning systems, artificial intelligence, dashboards, and virtual and augmented reality to improve the cost-effectiveness of training), weaknesses and threats were mainly social and organisational. These included a lack of standardisation and interoperability, limited ICT-supported training, infrastructure and cybersecurity gaps, resistance to change, legal constraints, underfunding, low technological readiness, and scepticism about the cost-effectiveness of ICT in real-world MCI contexts. Our findings highlight the gap between technological readiness and implementation challenges, suggesting that ICT innovation alone is insufficient without supportive governance, infrastructure, and stakeholder engagement. As the first Delphi study of its kind, it provides a strategic foundation for evidence-based ICT integration in training and operational MCI responses. The findings provide clear priorities for future policy development and empirical validation, emphasising the need to address persistent non-technical barriers to realise ICT’s full potential in crisis management.

Interlaboratory study of the quality of water vapor sorption data for wood from automated sorption balances

Opis: Automated sorption balances are widely used for characterizing the interaction of water vapor with hygroscopic materials. This paper is part of an interlaboratory study investigating the stability and performance of automated sorption balances. A previous paper in this study investigated the mass, temperature, and relative humidity (RH) stability of automated sorp- tion balances by looking at the mass change of a non-hygroscopic sample over time. In this study, we examine the mass stability of wood samples held at constant RH for seven to ten days after a step change. The reason for the long hold times was to collect data to “operational equilibrium” where the change in mass is on the order of the inherent operational stability of the instrument. A total of 80 datasets were acquired from 21 laboratories covering absorption with final RH levels ranging from 10 to 95%. During these long hold times, several unusual behaviors were observed in the mass-vs-time curves. Deviations from expected sorption behavior were examined by fitting the data to an empirical sorption kinetics model and calculating the root mean square error (RMSE) between the observed and smoothed behavior. Samples that had a large RMSE relative to the median RMSE of the other datasets often had one of several types of errors: abrupt disturbances, diurnal oscillations, or long-term mass decline during an absorption step. In many cases, mass fluctuations were correlated with changes in the water reservoir temperature of the automated sorption balance. We discuss potential errors in sorption measurements on hygroscopic materials and suggest an acceptable level of RMSE for sorption data.
