University Employees’ Perceptions of Innovation : Evidence from the BIKE-HEI Project First Training Programme
Klara Čalušić, Simona Kustec, 2026, strokovni članek

Opis: Universities are increasingly recognised as proactive actors in fostering innovation, contributing to regional growth, driving economic development, and enhancing social welfare. This paper explores perceptions of innovation and related knowledge among academic and non-academic university employees, based on data collected through an online questionnaire administered during a training course on innovation ecosystems offered within the BIKE-HEI project. The findings indicate that university employees generally perceive their innovation-related knowledge as relatively strong, with both academic and non-academic staff reporting high levels of intrinsic motivation to engage in innovation, as well as a clear aspiration to create meaningful impact. Among the barriers to acquiring additional knowledge and engaging in innovation-related work, respondents emphasise work-related constraints, including limited time, administrative and financial burdens, insufficient specialised knowledge of innovation, and a perceived general resistance to change within universities. These findings are consistent with existing theoretical and empirical research supporting the innovation and entrepreneurial orientation of universities, and they highlight the need to strengthen institutional support and create conditions that foster employees’ engagement in innovation-related activities.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey (N = 194 undergraduates; 52.6% women; M age = 21.9 years) used validated instruments: the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), Body Appreciation Scale-2 Short Form (BAS-2SF), Brief Resilience Scale (BRS), International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form (IPAQ-SF), and single-item measures of financial security and screen time. Physical activity (PA) was log-transformed (MET_log). Multiple simultaneous regression and structural equation modelling (SEM) were conducted. Results: Perceived stress was the strongest negative predictor of life satisfaction (B = −0.561, p < 0.001), while financial security was a significant positive predictor (B = +0.171, p = 0.023). SEM showed that body appreciation was associated with life satisfaction primarily through lower perceived stress (indirect effect = 0.107; consistent with indirect-only association pattern), while PA showed a significant direct association with life satisfaction (β = +0.143, p = 0.030), independent of the stress pathway. The indirect effect of PA via stress was not significant in the SEM. Model fit was acceptable (CFI = 0.951; RMSEA = 0.067). Conclusions: Perceived stress was statistically associated with the relationship between body appreciation and subjective well-being, while PA showed a direct statistical association with well-being that was independent of the stress pathway. Given the cross-sectional nature of this study, these findings suggest that university health promotion programmes may consider integrating positive body image and stress management components alongside PA promotion to support student psychological well-being.

Enhancing knowledge and technology transfer : determinants and indicators of successful university–industry collaboration
Jana Hojnik, Štefan Bojnec, Simona Kustec, Vaida Zemlickienė, Zenonas Turskis, 2026, pregledni znanstveni članek

Opis: Both universities and companies create value and innovation to maintain their position and remain competitive. Different, but still similar, with two goals that are shared. With their collaboration, they can enhance their pursuit of sustainability and as well corporate social responsibility by creating and delivering value and thus contributing to the well-being of society. This paper thus examines the determinants and indicators of successful university–industry collaboration (UIC) in the context of knowledge and technology transfer. The purpose of the research is to identify key factors that drive effective UIC and to establish measurable indicators for evaluating the performance of this collaboration. The paper aimed to understand not only what drives UIC but also how to measure its effectiveness. So, an exploratory, theory-building approach, adopting a systematic literature review is applied. By focusing on the determinants and measurable outputs of UIC, the paper provides insights into the strategic importance of measuring knowledge and technology transfer for a wide range of stakeholders involved in it. UIC for universities is a part of their third mission and their CSR, while with respect for companies, UIC is a result of practicing open innovation and pursuing corporate social responsibility. While consolidating these dimensions, the study also develops a holistic input–output indicator framework that not only clarifies how collaboration is initiated and structured but also how it can be evaluated in practice.

Supporting Knowledge Transfer and Social Impact : The SSHA Impact Fund of the University of Ljubljana
Tanja Kovačič, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: In recent years, the global research and higher education landscape has shifted from focusing solely on scientific excellence to demonstrating societal impact. Universities are now expected not only to generate knowledge but also to ensure that it contributes to social, cultural, environmental, and economic development. European and national strategies alike emphasise the role of research in addressing major societal challenges and shaping a sustainable, inclusive future. Within this context, the University of Ljubljana has recognised the importance of supporting researchers in achieving societal impact. Beyond its traditional missions, the University of Ljubljana has strengthened its efforts in knowledge transfer – the process of translating research results into societal benefits. This reflects a growing awareness that universities carry not only intellectual but also social responsibility to engage, co-create, and contribute to community wellbeing. The article examines how the University of Ljubljana supports researchers in enhancing societal impact, focusing on strategic frameworks, institutional mechanisms, and practical initiatives. It highlights the SSHA Impact Fund, established in 2024 as an innovative tool for promoting socially responsible research. The analysis draws on experience from the Knowledge Transfer Office within the Social Sciences, Humanities, and Arts (SSHA) and discusses key challenges and emerging best practices in this developing field.

From cinema to knowledge hub : circular economy and social innovation at the University of Primorska Library
Jonatan Vinkler, Jana Hojnik, 2025, strokovni članek

Opis: This paper presents a transformative initiative undertaken by the University of Primorska to centralise and modernise its library services. Through the implementation of a user-centric approach, the initiative reimagines the library as an inclusive, 24/7 accessible space that meets legal, operational, and social innovation standards. The revitalisation of a historic cinema complex into a dynamic library hub exemplifies circular economy principles (reusing and repurposing instead of building something new), while the initiative’s transdisciplinary methodology ensures scalability and replicability. A detailed SWOT analysis and impact analysis highlight the strengths, challenges, impact and long-term vision of the initiative, positioning it as a model for inclusive academic infrastructure.

Universities as Drivers of Social Innovation and Circular Economy : Insights from the University of Trieste
Rubina Romanello, Salvatore Dore, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Universities are main actors capable of fostering social innovation (SI) and advancing circular economy (CE) practices through education, research, community engagement, and internal governance practices. This article examines the University of Trieste (UNITS) as a case study to explore how universities can promote synergies between SI and CE. By analysing in-depth secondary and primary data, our study maps the activities implemented by the University to spread the two paradigms by specifically organizing them in four fields: teaching and student engagement; research and knowledge transfer; third mission and societal outreach; and sustainability practices. Through this mapping activity, this study identifies five benchmark activities that are considered highly impactful in spreading both SI and CE paradigms: the PhD Program in Circular Economy, the RUS Food Working Group, the AReTS water project, the adaptive reuse of the Ex-Ospedale Militare, and the Innovators Community Lab. Our results provide food for thought for policy makers and practitioners, showing some activities that might be replicable among higher education institutions worldwide.

Promoting sustainable medical education through digital competence : a cross-sectional pilot study
Sabina Ličen, Mirko Prosen, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The increasing digitalisation of medical education requires teachers to have a broad range of competences that go beyond basic technical knowledge. This pilot cross-sectional study assessed the self-perceived digital competence of medical faculty members and examined differences by professional role, experience and gender. Of 298 eligible staff, 48 participated (response rate 16.1%), including 19 women (39.6%) and 29 men (60.4%). The data was collected via an online survey using the validated Digital Competence Scale for University Teachers, which comprises four subscales: digital literacy, digital skills, digital interaction and technology integration. The overall median score indicated a generally high level of self-perceived digital competence, with 95% bootstrap confidence intervals confirming this pattern. Assistant professors achieved higher scores in all subscales than associate and full professors. Self-perceived digital competence was positively correlated with participation in structured training, higher interest and frequency of use of digital tools, while age and teaching experience were negatively correlated. The findings suggest unequal levels of self-perceived digital competence across the academic status and highlight the positive association of self-perceived digital competence with participation in targeted, practical and inclusive training programmes.
