Carbon and nitrogen isotopic analysis of the Middle/Late Bronze individuals from Bezdanjača Cave, Lika region, Croatia

Opis: Almost immediately upon its discovery in 1965, the Middle-Late Bronze Age cave site of Bezdanjača was recognized as one of the earliest, largest, and most important cemeteries in the Lika region of Croatia. Yet, despite its significance, not much is known about the people who were buried there. By combining bioarchaeological and stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analyses of a subset of the burial population, this study aims to (i) systematically reconstruct the diet and health of these individuals, (ii) investigate possible differences in dietary habits within this community based on sex and age, and (iii) contextualize results from Bezdanjača with other Bronze Age assemblages from the surrounding area.

Occupational and non-occupational device-measured movement behaviours and low back pain : a compositional isotemporal substitution analysis

Opis: Background: Physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and sleep were shown to be independently associated with low back pain (LBP). The aim of this cross-sectional study was to explore the associations between 24-hour movement behaviour compositions and the occurrence, severity, and estimated level of LBP impact on an individual’s life. Methods: A convenience sample of 197 adults (40% females, 37 ± 11 years of age) were asked to wear an activPAL accelerometer for at least 7 consecutive days to assess their time-use composition consisting of moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity (MVPA), light- intensity physical activity (LPA), sedentary behaviour (SB), and sleep and to complete a questionnaire on LBP and sociodemographic characteristics. Compositional isotemporal substitution analyses were conducted separately for the non-domain-specific and domain- specific (including occupational and non-occupational domains) movement behaviour compositions. Results: Reallocating time from MVPA to any other movement behaviour or from sleep to LPA was associated with a higher LBP impact score. For example, reallocating 60 min/day from MVPA to LPA was associated with on average 17 points (95% CI: 6 to 28) higher LBP impact score (on a 0-70 scale). We did not find significant associations between the domain- specific time-use composition and LBP impact score (p = 0.060). We also did not find significant associations of the time-use compositions with occurrence and severity of LBP (p- value range: 0.067 to 0.649). Conclusion: Our study suggests that LBP sufferers with higher MVPA and sleep better cope with LBP. The differences in the LBP impact scores associated with theoretical reallocations between movement behaviours may be deemed clinically important. Future longitudinal and experimental studies in population-representative samples are needed to confirm our findings.

Človek v primežu covida-19 : duševno zdravje in psihosocialne potrebe prebivalcev Slovenije
2025, znanstvena monografija

Opis: Znanstvena monografija ponuja celovit vpogled v duševno zdravje prebivalcev Slovenije v času epidemije covida-19 in na ta način poskuša orisati morebitni vpliv zaščitnih in omejevalnih ukrepov na njihovo psihosocialno dobrobit. Temelji na obsežni empirični raziskavi, katere namen ni bil le spremljati psihološke odzive prebivalstva, temveč predvsem razumeti, katere potrebe so imeli posamezniki in kako so se te potrebe razlikovale glede na življenjske in poklicne okoliščine. Razumevanje teh potreb predstavlja temelj za oblikovanje ciljno usmerjenih intervencij in strokovnjakom nudi ključne informacije o tem, kaj ljudje v kriznih razmerah dejansko potrebujejo. Kvantitativni del je nadgrajen s kvalitativno raziskavo, ki dopolnjuje statistične izsledke z globljim razumevanjem izkušenj skozi pogled prebivalcev, zbran s poglobljenimi intervjuji, in skozi pogled strokovnjakov, raziskan z metodo Delfi. Triangulacija metod omogoča preplet številčnih kazalcev in osebnih pripovedi ter nudi celovito razumevanje psihosocialnih posledic epidemije. Poleg empiričnih izsledkov, monografije vsebuje tudi teoretični uvod, ki na osnovi podatkov iz različnih raziskav prikazuje, kako so psihosocialni stresorji, kot so negotovost, izolacija, pomanjkanje podpore, izguba dela ali preobremenjenost neenakomerno prizadeli različne skupine prebivalstva. Monografija se zaključi s poglavjem, v katerem so na osnovi analiziranih podatkov in teoretičnih spoznanj populacijskih znanosti oblikovana priporočila, kako načrtovati javnozdravstvene in psihosocialne intervencije v kriznih situacijah ter tako graditi in utrjevati kolektivno odpornost posameznikov in celotne skupnosti.

Napodobovatelé, spojenci a rivalové : česko-slovinské a slovinsko-české kulturní kontakty v 19. století

Opis: Znanstvena monografija je v celoti posvečena češko-slovenskim kulturnim stikom v obdobju narodne prebuje in romantike/postromantike (z obsežno predzgodovino in posameznimi razlagalnimi "posegi" v poznejši čas). Tako gre za delo, ki predstavlja temeljno znanstveno študijo za obravnavana vprašanja. Študija opozarja na podobnosti in različnosti med deželami krone sv. Václava, ki so tvorile zaključeno zgodovinskopravno in v veliki meri tudi etnično enoto, in deželami Notranje Avstrije, kjer so živeli Slovenci, ki se pri svojih mejah niso mogli naslanjati ne na zgodovino ne na etnične meje. Delo ugotavlja, da se je oblikovanje narodne zavesti pri Čehih moglo nasloniti na ideologijo historičnega prava, medtem ko Slovenci te možnosti niso imeli oziroma je niso znali poiskati. Nadalje ugotavlja, da so bili v obdobju, ki je še prisegalo na historično pravo, Čehi korak pred Slovenci in so slednjim služili za zgled. To se je kazalo vse do konca obravnavanega obdobja, ko so Slovenci kljub pomislekom o pristnosti dozdevno srednjeveških Rokopisov kraljedvorskih in zelenogorskih le-te prevedli (Kopitar jih je vseskozi imel za ponaredke). Narodnorazvojna logika je Slovence večkrat silila v podrejen položaj nasproti Čehom, čeprav slovenski učenjaki in pesniki niso zaostajali za češkimi (Kopitar in Prešeren sta češke sodobnike celo presegala). V slovensko-češki smeri delo opozarja na poudarjeno individualne stike: za posamezne češke kulturne delavce so bila zanimiva nekatera dela slovenske književnosti (npr. Prešernova). Študija ugotavlja, da so češko-slovenski in slovensko-češki kulturni stiki v 19. stoletju presegli raven običajne kulturne izmenjave med dvema narodoma; v obeh premerih je šlo za naklonjenost med razumniki enega in drugega naroda, ki so čutili nekakšno medsebojno "krvno vez". Slednja pa ni bila samo posledica ideologije panslavizma, ki se je kot odgovor na tendenco vsenemškega združevanja pojavila v predmarčnem času, ampak tudi podobnih problemov (centralizacija, nerazvitost kulturne "infrastrukture" …). Delo, ki je namenjeno strokovnemu (slovenističnemu, slavističnemu in zgodovinarskemu) ter širšemu humanističnemu občinstvu, zlasti bralcem, ki se ukvarjajo z vprašanji slovenske narodne identitete in njene geneze v 19. stoletju v primerjavi z narodno genezo ostalih srednjeevropskih slovanskih narodov, predvsem Čehov, je temeljita znanstvena študija, ki zelo uspešno združuje avtorjevo večstransko strokovno zanimanje. Presega paradigmo klasične filologije v smislu moderne kulturne oz. intelektualne zgodovine. Študija izkazuje neoporečno pojmovanje interdisciplinarnosti: argumenti in metodologije posameznih strok se ne mešajo – primerjajo in dopolnjujejo se edino rezultati, ki so dobljeni na podlagi različnih pristopov. To je opaziti tudi v uporabljeni literaturi, ki je neobičajno široka, delo pa je v prenekateri točki utemeljeno na doslej pri nas še neuporabljenih primarnih virih (tu velja omeniti zlasti Šafaříkovo/Šafárikovo in Gebauerjevo zapuščino, ki se hrani v Pragi). Monografija ni pomembna samo za obravnavo češko-slovenskih stikov, temveč tudi v širšem slavističnem kontekstu – kot vzorčni primer preučevanja medsebojnega vpliva(nja) dveh kultur. Kot tako bo mogla služiti kot vzor pri izpeljavi podobnih raziskav odnosov med Slovenci in drugimi slovanskimi, pa tudi neslovanskimi narodi (zlasti sosedi).

Kozjanski park v luči naraščajočih turističnih dejavnosti : analiza obiska in razvojnih možnosti zavarovanega območja

Opis: Na zavarovanem območju Kozjanskega parka se prepletajo trije varstveni statusi: park ima zaradi biotske in pokrajinske pestrosti status širšega zavarovanega območja (regijski park), zaradi ohranjene narave, kulturne dediščine in tradicionalnega sobivanja ljudi z naravo je bil prepoznan tudi kot eno od štirih UNESCO-vih biosfernih območij v Sloveniji, večji del parka pa je obenem varovan še v okviru omrežja Natura 2000. Zavarovano območje Kozjanskega parka hkrati predstavlja tudi enega od osrednjih turističnih ciljev za domače in tuje obiskovalce na območju Posotelja in vzhodne Slovenije, kar se posledično odraža v številnih pozitivnih in negativnih učinkih. Na podlagi izvedene anketne raziskave med obiskovalci Kozjanskega parka, ki so prihajali iz Slovenije, so avtorji prispevka skušali odgovoriti na naslednja raziskovalna vprašanja: ali je obravnavano zavarovano območje že prepoznano kot pomembna turistična destinacija, ali varstveni statusi prispevajo k večji prepoznavnosti parka, kakšna je percepcija parka med obiskovalci, kateri ključni elementi (naravne vrednote, kulturna dediščina in turistične storitve) obiskovalce najbolj pritegnejo in kakšne so možnosti oziroma neizkoriščeni potenciali, ki jih obiskovalci zaznavajo na območju parka. Anketna raziskava, ki je vključevala skupno 109 v celoti izpolnjenih anketnih vprašalnikov, je bila pripravljena v sodelovanju z upravo Javnega zavoda Kozjanski park in prinaša pomembna informativna spoznanja o posameznikovih izkušnjah pri obisku parka in možnih turističnih potencialih, ki se kažejo v tem zavarovanem območju.

Dealing with the complexity of effective population size in conservation practice

Opis: Effective population size (Ne) is one of the most important parameters in evolutionary biology, as it is linked to the long-term survival capability of species. Therefore, Ne greatly interests conservation geneticists, but it is also very relevant to policymakers, managers, and conservation practitioners. Molecular methods to estimate Ne rely on various assumptions, including no immigration, panmixia, random sampling, absence of spatial genetic structure, and/or mutation-drift equilibrium. Species are, however, often characterized by fragmented populations under changing environmental conditions and anthropogenic pressure. Therefore, the estimation methods' assumptions are seldom addressed and rarely met, possibly leading to biased and inaccurate Ne estimates. To address the challenges associated with estimating Ne for conservation purposes, the COST Action 18134, Genomic Biodiversity Knowledge for Resilient Ecosystems (G-BiKE), organized an international workshop that met in August 2022 in Brașov, Romania. The overarching goal was to operationalize the current knowledge of Ne estimation methods for conservation practitioners and decision-makers. We set out to identify datasets to evaluate the sensitivity of Ne estimation methods to violations of underlying assumptions and to develop data analysis strategies that addressed pressing issues in biodiversity monitoring and conservation. Referring to a comprehensive body of scientific work on Ne, this meeting report is not intended to be exhaustive but rather to present approaches, workshop findings, and a collection of papers that serve as fruits of those efforts. We aimed to provide insights and opportunities to help bridge the gap between scientific research and conservation practice.

The health-economic burden of hip and knee periprosthetic joint infections in Europe : a comprehensive analysis following primary arthroplasty

Opis: Aims Periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs) pose significant challenges to patients and healthcare systems worldwide. The aim of this study was to estimate the health-economic burden of reimbursement payment in Europe for PJIs following primary hip and knee arthroplasty. Methods The calculation was based on health-economic modelling using data on primary hip and knee arthroplasties for the year 2019 from the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat) and published infection rates to estimate the total number of hip and knee PJIs in 30 European countries. Revision procedures were stratified into: 1) debridement, antibiotics, and implant retention (DAIR); 2) one-stage exchange; and 3) two-stage revision procedures. The cases were then multiplied by the respective healthcare system reimbursement payments. Payment data were acquired from a survey of 13 countries (Austria, Croatia, France, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Slovenia, Switzerland, Turkey, and the UK) and extrapolated for the remaining countries. Results In 2019, a total of 2,048,778 primary total joint replacements were performed (total hip arthroplasty (THA) = 1,147,316 and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) = 901,462), with an estimated 20,416 cases of PJIs (11,131 hip and 9,285 knee) in Europe. This results in an estimated total reimbursement burden of €346,262,026 for European healthcare systems. The breakdown for hip PJI reimbursement was €197,230,953 (€9,751,962 for DAIR procedures, €45,135,894 for one-stage revisions, and €142,343,097 for two-stage revisions). For knee PJIs, the analysis yielded a total reimbursement of €149,031,073 (€9,335,075 for DAIR procedures, €48,058,479 for one-stage revisions, and €91,637,518 for two-stage revisions). Conclusion This is the first study to evaluate the health-economic burden of PJIs in Europe, revealing a substantial impact on healthcare systems with an estimated case load of 20,414 cases and overall reimbursement of €346,262,026 for primary THAs and TKAs performed in 2019.

New advances in jellyfish anatomy : the benefits of endocasts and X-ray microtomography in the investigation of the gastrovascular system of Cotylorhiza tuberculata (Scyphozoa; Rhizostomeae; Cepheidae)

Opis: Historically, research on jellyfish anatomy has been viewed as secondary in impor- tance and has not benefited from technical advances that could improve the quality of the results when compared to other disciplines. The most notable example is the anatomical research on jellyfish, which has been done using conventional methods for many years. Thus far, recent studies have shown that X-ray microtomography (μCT) and resin endocasts can yield outputs with remarkably high detail quality. The application of a similar protocol to Cotylorhiza tuberculata has allowed us to rede- scribe the anatomy of this species’ gastrovascular system, providing numerous addi- tional details, among them the double constricted canal structure present in the oral arms, which was absent in previous descriptions. Additionally, functional anatomy experiments have revealed a double circulation system within these canals, featur- ing specialized oral arms’ openings for intake and outflow, as previously observed in Rhizostoma pulmo. These findings challenge the theory of a simple digestive system in scyphozoans featuring openings that acts both as mouths and anuses. Given the genetic distance between Cotylorhiza tuberculata and Rhizostoma pulmo, which belong to different suborders (Kolpophorae and Dactyliophorae, respectively), we propose that this complex gastrovascular circulation pattern may be more wide- spread among the Rhizostomeae.

Can nuisance species profit from new materials for marine artificial structures? : A pilot study on settlement of Chrysaora hysoscella on biochar-based concrete

Opis: Growing ocean-based human activities are causing the expansion of concrete structures in the marine envi- ronment, stressing the need for new solutions to minimize their ecological impact and carbon footprint. A promising approach in this perspective involves the use of biochar, a carbon-rich byproduct from thermo- chemical treatment of waste biomass, as an additive to concrete. However, the introduction of novel substrata could pose unintended threats to marine ecosystems, including the potential diffusion of nuisance species. Here, through a set of laboratory experiments, we provided preliminary evidence on the effects of biochar addition to concrete on settlement and survival of the bloom-forming jellyfish Chrysaora hysoscella. The acute 24/48-h mortality test demonstrated a very low sensitivity of planulae to biochar. At both 7 and 14 days since the exposure to colonization of planula larvae, the number of settled polyps did not differ between concrete con- taining biochar (5–10 % wt.) and conventional concrete. Once settled, polyps exhibited comparable survival regardless of the substratum. Our findings support the hypothesis that biochar-based concrete does not favor the invasiveness of this nuisance species with respect to conventional concrete, paving the way for future research on a wider range of (bio)char types and potentially harmful species, enabling broader implementations of these materials. The inherent advantages of biochar addition to concrete for marine uses, such as waste recycling and carbon storage potential, combined with its neutral effect on the spread of nuisance species, could represent a practicable and biocompatible solution to enhance the sustainability of marine artificial structures.
