Saving the future without forgetting the past : crisis, transmission, and temporal senseRiccardo Valenti, 2026 Opis: Contemporary debates on utopia, dystopia, and retrotopia are often framed as conflicts between competing visions of the future. This paper argues that such figures are better understood as symptomatic expressions of a deeper crisis in the phenomenological articulation of time. What is at stake is not primarily a lack of imagination, but a disruption in the transmission of meaning across past, present, and future. Drawing on Husserl’s late diagnosis of crisis, Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology of institution and sedimentation, and postphenomenological accounts of technical mediation, the paper reconstructs the conditions under which temporal sense can remain operative rather than rigidified. It shows that the future remains accessible as an open horizon only insofar as the past functions as a living, revisable ground of meaning,rather than as inert tradition or nostalgic refuge. The analysis further examines how contemporary technoscientific forms of anticipation, while indispensable for understanding large-scale phenomena, risk transforming futurity into a preformatted and governable object, thereby foreclosing the very openness they seek to secure. In dialogue with Levinas’s ethics of responsibility and Waldenfels’s phenomenology of responsiveness, the paper concludes that phenomenology ‘saves’ the future not by stabilizing or predicting it, but by preserving the conditions of transmission, reactivation, and response through which temporal meaning remains generative. Utopia, dystopia, and retrotopia are thus reframed as derivative temporal operators that emerge when the balance between inheritance and anticipation is compromised.

32. Longing for the south : Camus, relative utopia, and the logic of abstractionAna Ilievska, 2026 Opis: Under conditions of generalized reified abstraction–a historically sedimented condition in which mediating forms forget they are mediating and present themselves as reality itself– utopia has lost its critical function and become indistinguishable from ideology. Where Paul Ricoeur argued that the tension between ideology and utopia is unsurpassable, this essay contends that the tension has already col lapsed. Utopia has been absorbed into ideology rather than correcting it, leaving what Marx called ‘the language of real life’ without a foothold. Against this diagnosis, the essay proposes Albert Camus’s notion of ‘relative utopia’ as a specifically adequate response to the conditions of reified abstraction, one that builds the critique of abstraction into its own structure by refusing the consolation of any ground, including the ground of hope itself. Reading Camus along side the nineteenth-century Balkan poet Konstantin Miladinov and his poem ‘T’ga za jug’ (Longing for the South), the essay argues that relative utopia is not a chastened utopianism but a form of first praxis, an orientation without innocence: limit, doubt, and attachment to the other and to a world accepted as flawed and yet worth the effort.

Spatialities of the otherwise : cities, lands, and territories vaster than empires in feminist political utopiasFederica Castelli, 2026 Opis: This paper explores the intersections between feminist utopian writing and feminist political philosophy, foregrounding space as a constitutive dimension of feminist possibility. Drawing on relational ontologies, it argues that space is not a neutral material given, but a product of power, narrative, and imagination that both enables and constrains self-determination and intersubjective relations. Moving beyond the dualistic modern subject, the paper traces how feminist thought reframes otherness as interdependence and liminality– a vision embodied by Le Guin’s character Osden in ‘Vaster than Empires and More Slow.’ Through a comparative reading of four literary works– Christine de Pizan’s La Cité des Dames, Gilman’s Herland, and Le Guin’s The Left Hand of Darkness and The Dispossessed– the paper examines how feminist utopias rewrite political and spatial concepts such as map, border, nation, and empire, producing porous, ambiguous, and relational spaces.

34. Weed utopia : potentiality, negation and the material imagination of Earth in The right to be lazyAnna Enström, 2026 Opis: This article examines John Knight’s installation The Right to Be Lazy as a material and conceptual articulation of utopia grounded in negation, ecological processes, and imagination. Drawing on Paul La fargue’s critique of labour, Gaston Bachelard’s theory of material imagination, and Ernst Bloch’s notion of the ‘not-yet,’ the text reconceptualizes laziness not as inactivity but as a productive suspension of instrumental action. The unmanaged growth of weeds within a controlled garden setting becomes a model for utopian potential embedded in the present, revealing alternative temporalities and modes of perception. By foregrounding soil, roots, and spontaneous vegetation, the article argues that material processes themselves harbour anticipatory, world-making capacities. Laziness thus emerges as a political and aesthetic practice that interrupts capitalist imperatives of productivity and immediacy. Ultimately, the essay positions ‘weed utopia’ as a form of immanent critique, where negation, imagination, and ecological vitality converge to reopen possibilities for collective transformation.

35. Between Marx and Fourier : Walter Benjamin and the utopian reconfiguration of historyChristos Kalpakidis, 2026 Opis: This article reinterprets Walter Benjamin’s philosophy of history by foregrounding his engagement with Charles Fourier as central rather than marginal. It argues that Benjamin’s use of Fourier’s utopian ‘wish-images’ introduces an anticipatory dimension often overlooked in scholarship dominated by themes of catastrophe and rupture. Fourier’s hedonistic materialism– centred on passions, plea sure, and transformed relations to labour and nature– provides Benjamin with conceptual tools to expand historical materialism beyond economic critique toward imagination, sensuousness, and happiness. By situating Benjamin between Marx and Fourier, the article reveals how here configures Marxism to integrate utopian projection with materialist analysis. Fourier’s images are interpreted not as naïve fantasies but as historically grounded expressions of collective desires embedded in capitalist modernity. Ultimately, the study proposes a ‘utopian materialism’ in which critique and anticipation are inseparable, offering a framework for understanding emancipation as both structural transformation and the liberation of everyday life and human capacities.

For the rest of the cases, only lower and upper bounds for γ(Cm □ Pn) are known. In this paper, we study γ(Cm □ Pn) when m ≡ 1, 3, 4 (mod 5). In particular, we compute γ(Cm □ Pn) if 30 ≤ m ≡ 1 (mod 5) and n ≥ 22, and we provide tighter lower and upper bounds for γ(Cm □ Pn) if m ≡ 3, 4 (mod 5).

Griggs, Robert Lewis, James Tuite, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Two Eulerian circuits, both starting and ending at the same vertex, are avoiding if at every other point of the circuits they are at least distance 2 apart. An Eulerian graph which admits two such avoiding circuits starting from any vertex is said to be doubly Eulerian. The motivation for this definition is that the extremal Eulerian graphs, i.e. the complete graphs on an odd number of vertices and the cycles, are not doubly Eulerian. We prove results about doubly Eulerian graphs and identify those that are the “densest” and “sparsest” in terms of the number of edges.

Secondary constructions of plateaued Boolean functions through addition of indicatorsEnes Pašalić, Sadmir Kudin, Samir Hodžić, Dilawar Abbas Khan, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Recently, the design of $s$-plateaued functions over $\F_2^n$, whose Walsh spectra take values in ${0,\pm 2^{\frac{n+s}{2}}}$, has been studied algorithmically to identify balanced plateaued functions of maximal algebraic degree, called optimal. In this article, we characterize optimal plateaued functions within the Generalized Maiorana-McFarland (GMM) class and provide sufficient conditions for them to have no nonzero linear structures. By adapting a technique of C. Carlet for modifying bent functions in the Maiorana-McFarland ($\cM$) class, we derive new classes of plateaued functions from $GMM$, including the subclass $\cD_0$ when $\phi$ is non-injective, although under more restrictive conditions. We also identify conditions ensuring plateauedness in the resulting $\cC$ class. Finally, using indicator functions of the form $1_{E_1}(x)1_{E_2}(y)$ for suitably chosen subspaces $E_1\subseteq\F_2^k$ and $E_2\subseteq\F_2^{n-k}$, we construct plateaued functions outside GMM.

Rotation-symmetric bent functions outside the completed Maiorana-McFarland classAlexandr Polujan, Sadmir Kudin, Enes Pašalić, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Rotation-symmetric (RS) bent functions, which are invariant under the action of the cyclic group, have attracted significant attention over the past three decades due to their importance in cryptographic applications. For the last three decades of research on these objects, most known RS bent func- tions have been obtained by applying extended-affine equivalence to specific Maiorana-McFarland bent functions, in a way that ensures the resulting function retains invariance under the cyclic group action. Due to the intrinsic difficulty of characterizing RS bent functions that do not belong to the completed Maiorana- McFarland class M#, there has been no evidence for the existence of such functions until now. In this paper, we provide, for the first time, a solution to this problem. First, we perform a computational classification of RS cubic bent functions in ten variables under extended-affine equivalence and demonstrate that one of the resulting classes is outside the M# class. Next, we prove that an infinite family of RS bent functions on Fn 2 of maximum algebraic degree n/2 (Su, Adv. Math. Commun. 13(2): 253–265, 2019) does not belong to M#, for all n ≥ 8. Finally, we show that a family of quartic RS bent functions on Fn 2 (Carlet, Gao, and Liu, J. Comb. Theory Ser. A 127: 161–175, 2014), does not belong to the M# class for infinitely many n.

40. Orientability versus bi-orientabilityAntonio Breda d'Azevedo, Domenico A. Catalano, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Topological orientability was first defined by Listing in 1861 followed closely by Möbius (1865); Möbius defined orientation by the existence of a coherent edges orientation of a net (polygonal) decomposition of a compact surface. After Euler's classification of compact surfaces, it was clear that the Möbious combinatorial definition only dependents on the surface and not on the particular polygonal decomposition. This makes orientability both a topological and a combinatorial property. A surface can be orientable or not, and so a given surface can support an orientable or a non-orientable map, but not both. In contrast, bi-orientable and non-bi-orientable maps (introduced by Steve Wilson in the seventies as pseudo-orientable maps) can both be present in the same surface. This makes bi-orientability a purely combinatorial property, nonetheless, it shows remarkable resemblances with orientability. These two categories of maps are connected by the Petrie dual operation.
The present paper pretends to emphasise their similarities and their differences, having as main focus bi-orientable maps. In the present paper, maps are considered to have no semi-edges and no boundary.
