Metaforična konstrukcija velikega podatkovja in umetne inteligence : analiza ideoloških instrumentalizacij tehnoloških in družbenih procesov
Tadej Praprotnik, 2025, original scientific article

Abstract: Članek tematizira in problematizira uveljavljene in (medijsko) propagirane podobe aktualnih tehnoloških procesov ter artefaktov (veliko podatkovje, umetna inteligenca).

Exploring Cannabis and Opium in Post-Medieval Portugal and Related Nations Through Archaeological and Literary Evidence
Miguel Martins de Sousa, 2025, original scientific article

Abstract: This paper examines cannabis (Cannabis sp.) and opium (Papaver somniferum) in post-medieval Europe, with a focus on Portugal and regions shaped by global trade and colonial networks. Covering the sixteenth–nineteenth centuries, it synthesizes historical texts such as medical treatises, travel narratives, and ethnographic accounts, alongside fragmentary material evidence to trace how these substances were perceived, used, and culturally embedded. The sources suggest diverse roles, from therapeutic and recreational applications to broader symbolic meanings within early modern life. While the evidence is dispersed and often partial, the study contributes to a growing historiography of psychoactive substances in Europe. By foregrounding Portuguese examples within wider intellectual and cultural currents, it advances inquiry into how cannabis and opium intersected with evolving notions of the body, health, and consciousness in the early modern period.
Keywords: cannabis, opium, Portugal, 16th–19th centuries, consuming habits

History and Practice of Contract Archaeology in Namibia
Goodman Gwasira, 2025, original scientific article

Abstract: This article traces how contract archaeology in Namibia emerged and consolidated after 1990 at the intersection of environmental regulation, donor requirements, and large-scale development – especially mining and energy infrastructure. It shows that, for decades, practice was largely self-regulated in the absence of national guidelines, drawing authority from Environmental Impact Assessments and the National Heritage Act. Comparing regional standards (e.g. SAHRA, ASAPA), the paper argues for clear standard operating procedures, professional accreditation, and capacity building to ensure ethical, consistent work that contributes to scholarship and community engagement. It concludes that Namibia now has an opportunity to professionalise the field, leverage ‘grey literature’ for research, and align heritage protection with sustainable development.

Terenska preverjanja so obenem razkrila veliko notranjo variabilnost v navidezno enotnih tipih značilnosti. Prispevek predstavlja primer refleksivnega pristopa k interpretaciji podatkov zračnega laserskega skeniranja, kar postaja vse pomembnejše v luči naraščajoče rabe avtomatskih sistemov in umetne inteligence v arheologiji.

Sensory Representations of Plague : The Plague Altar from the Mid-18th Century in St Andrew’s Church, Makole, Slovenia
Mojca Ramšak, 2025, original scientific article

Abstract: The article examines the sensory experiences associated with death during the plague and contextualises them within a specific historical and geographical framework. The author focuses on the plague altar from the mid-eighteenth century in the Haloze Church of St Andrew in Makole, Slovenia. In particular, she analyses the lower part of the altarpiece, which is attributed to an unknown artist. The plague altar not only conveys religious messages, but also reflects the knowledge and belief in the miasma theory of the time in question, in particular the understanding of the smell of the plague, the regulations on the plague and the organisation of civil protection. These themes vividly illustrate the depictions of the plague on the altar and offer insights into society’s reactions to illness and death in this period.

The Critical Position of Soviet Parliament Buildings Today : A Visual Analysis of the Crowds in the Built Environment
İlknur Erdoğan, Giuseppe Resta, 2025, original scientific article

Abstract: Nationalist discourses build societal unity by shaping rituals, historical narratives, and collective memory to construct the myth of a nation. Post-Soviet countries offer a unique context for examining the production of nationalism as a transition from a multinational past to a national identity. This process of decommunisation unfolds through the Soviet traces in the built environment. As a physical representation of the state narrative, we focus on the architectural memory and architectonic transformations of Soviet parliament buildings, analysed via large-scale axonometric drawings. Architectural landmarks such as parliament areas have evolved into focal points for confronting the traumatic memory of the second half of the twentieth century. The text focuses on the White House in Moscow, the Verkhovna Rada in Kyiv, the Government House in Baku, the National Assembly Building of Armenia in Yerevan, and the Government House in Minsk. How have communities reacted to the parliament buildings as tangible reminders of their problematic past? Following the methodologies the forensic aesthetic paradigm opened up, we traced the protest’s morphology, its form, and the transformations made in the built environment. By analysing videos, photos, and newspaper articles, we mapped out the protests to discuss architecture’s role in conveying state narratives.
Keywords: parliament buildings, post-Soviet countries, nationalist architecture, spaces of protest, anatomy of crowds
