The social construction of environmental reality : an analysis of life cycle assessment in the food industry

Opis: This article offers a critical sociological-philosophical-communicological review of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method in the context of the food industry. While LCA has been established as a standardized tool for quantifying environmental impacts, this study analyses it not merely as a technical method but as an epistemological construct that actively shapes societal understanding of sustainability. Drawing on the theory of social construction of reality, situated knowledge, and critical theory, the article explores how methodological choices within LCA (e.g., system boundary definition and indicator selection) are not neutral but reflect specific social and political priorities. The findings reveal that standardized LCA approaches oſten lead to epistemological reductionism by homogenizing complex ecological processes and neglecting local contexts and environmental justice issues. Furthermore, the article examines the instrumentalization of LCA in sustainability communication and green marketing, where quantitative data are frequently used to legitimize existing business models rather than to drive systemic change. The discussion emphasizes the need to transcend instrumental rationality and shiſt toward transdisciplinary and deliberative approaches. The article advocates for integrating Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA) and broader Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA) frameworks to address sustainability challenges in the food industry more holistically, incorporating social justice and cultural sensitivity.

Perception of people with visual impairments

Opis: Blindness, partial sightedness, and cortical/cerebral visual impairment pose complex challenges and are difficult to define in a single manner. In the Slovenian school system, the pedagogical definition focuses on the specific visual abilities of children, serving as the basis for adapting the educational process and creating an inclusive environment. Children with visual impairments require content that offers an alternative to visual information, enabling them to participate actively in society. The development of tactile perception has a key role in their holistic development; through play and interaction, they learn about the world around them. Extended curriculum activities should promote concrete and language-rich experiences, as this enables the comprehension of fundamental concepts. Effective strategies for working with children with visual impairments include tactile modelling and audio description, which facilitate children’s exploration and interpretation of information. Audio description enhances the accessibility of cultural resources, while tactile content promotes the development of fine motor skills. Together, these elements create a supportive framework that fosters children’s independence and success. The conscious design of learning content and adaptation of teaching methods are crucial for successfully including children with visual impairments in the modern education system.

Men in educational professions

Opis: Men have traditionally been underrepresented in the teaching profession, impacting the dynamics of the educational system and gender equality in pedagogical work. This study analyzes the social, cultural, and institutional factors influencing men’s decisions to pursue a teaching career and evaluates their professional experiences. The research is based on quantitative data collected through a survey questionnaire and theoretical frameworks such as Bourdieu’s concept of social habitus and Connell’s theory of masculinity. Findings indicate that men in educational professions often face stereotypes, occupational barriers, and different expectations regarding career advancement compared to their female colleagues. The study provides policy recommendations to promote gender diversity in teaching professions.
