Systems approach to sports events : from event animation to legal regulation
Tadeja Jere Jakulin, 2026, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Opis: Spors events represent a complex tourism system that includes various interdependent and intertwined relationships between organisers, participants, the local community and legal regulations. The paper researches sports events from a systems- methodological perspective, where sports events are not treated as isolated phenomena, but as dynamic systems with lively relationships between various stakeholders. The paper analyses three dimensions of sports events in tourism: (1) the animation potential of sports activities, (2) the systemic modelling of sports events using the methodology of system dynamics, and (3) the legal and organisational framework that ensures the safety, responsibility and sustainability of sports event tourism. Using qualitative modelling (causal loop diagram (CLD)) and systems thinking, the article proposes a multi-criteria decision model as a concept for planning sports events, while also indicating the possibility of superimposing the model onto a so-called simulation quantitative model.

Geoheritage, geotourism and Fibrex functional foods : a case study of Montenegro
Vesna Vujačić, Duško Vujačić, Jelena Filipovic, Marko Kukanja, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This study examines the relationship between Montenegro’s geoheritage, geotourism, and functional food enriched with Fibrex dietary fiber as a potential pathway to sustainable development. Particular attention is given to geotourism as a tool for promoting natural heritage and linking geoheritage with local gastronomic products. An interdisciplinary conceptual work integrating tourism studies and nutrition science has been developed. The research utilises a set of quantitative analytical methods encompassing bread quality evaluation, texture profiling, chemical composition analysis, colour measurement, and sensory assessment. The nutritional and functional characteristics of the examined product were assessed through laboratory testing and field surveys. Dietary fiber content was determined using standardised AOAC (Association of Official Analytical Chemists) and AACC (American Association of Cereal Chemists International) methods combined with the Furda technique. A functional bread product containing 0 %, 5 %, and 10 % Fibrex dietary fiber was developed and evaluated through sensory assessment, technological quality testing, and chemical–nutritional analysis. Results indicate that Fibrex enrichment increases the nutritional value of bread, while survey findings show positive consumer acceptance among local respondents. The findings suggest that integrating Fibrex-based functional foods into Montenegrin gastronomy and geotourism may support the integration of geoheritage, local food systems, and sustainable tourism development.

Virtual reality and declarative knowledge acquisition in hospitality management education : a classroom-based pilot study
Marko Kukanja, Saša Planinc, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This study examines the effectiveness of a virtual reality (VR) application as a learning tool in higher hospitality education, focusing on declarative knowledge acquisition and test-based learning outcomes. Conducted as a classroom-based pilot study, it involved a census of undergraduate students enrolled in a restaurant management course (N = 28) and compared VR-supported learning with traditional instruction using printed materials. Declarative knowledge acquisition was assessed using identical multiple-choice pre- and post-tests. Results showed that scores improved across all students. A statistically signifi- cant time × group interaction indicated that the two groups improved at different rates over time. Students who learned using printed materials demonstrated greater improvement than those who used the VR application. The findings suggest that, in its implementation, the VR application did not demonstrate superior test-based knowledge outcomes compared to traditional learning. One possible explanation lies in the type of knowledge assessed: the test focused on declarative and recognition-based knowledge, whereas VR may be more effective for procedural and experience-based learning. The limited interactivity of the early-stage VR application (VR HOTEL v0.9.4) may have also constrained its instructional potential. Overall, the results highlight the importance of aligning VR-based learning activities with learning objectives, instructional design, and assessment methods.

Weaving the threads of authenticity : cultural tourism and handcrafted heritage in Zlatibor
Tadeja Jere Jakulin, 2026, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Opis: Zlatibor, a mountain range in southwestern Serbia, is not just a summer and winter resort or a climatic spa. It’s a nature park transformed into a tourist destination of two extremes. New, high-rise apartment buildings that symbolise modernity obstruct the view of the town of Zlatibor. However, the central part of this urban settlement intertwines with authenticity through local food, handicrafts, taverns, music, herbalism, and homemade food and drinks. The chapter aims to provide a nuanced understanding of the multifaceted dimensions of cultural tourism in Zlatibor through a comprehensive exploration of these interconnected aspects. It underlines the role of cultural tourism in preserving and promoting the region’s handcrafted traditions, tourist experiences, and the creation of meaningful, authentic handwoven products. It builds systems measures in the form of a causal loop diagram, which serves as a model of actual stakeholders in Zlatibor, who influence the development of cultural tourism, its interdependencies and most of all, understanding between local artisans and tourists, building a bridge between the past and the present to reach the optimal cultural tourism development on a base of cultural heritage of this tourism area. The created CLD (causal loop model) serves as a presentation of systems methodology as an optimal methodology for creating strategies in tourism.

Sacred or sold? : A systems approach to balancing spirituality and commercialisation in faith-based tourism
Tadeja Jere Jakulin, Dane Munro, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper examines the complexity of pilgrimage tourism, with its interdependencies among sacredness, spirituality, and commercialisation at faith-based tourism destinations. We use a Systems Approach to move beyond linear thinking that positions spirituality and commerce as inherently oppositional forces, arguing that pilgrimage destinations function as complex adaptive systems in which spiritual, commercial, and educational objectives interact dynamically. We build Causal Loop Diagrams (CLDs) formed from autoethnographic observation and stakeholder discussions. We present and compare four pilgrimage sites: Lourdes (France), Brezje (Slovenia), Malta, and Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia (Türkiye). The CLD models reveal the dynamics of the pilgrimage sites, the interdependencies, and the interactions among stakeholders (elements of the system). The systems approach demonstrates that successful destinations manage pilgrimage sites as integrated systems in which activities complement and constrain one another through feedback loops. Using a Systems Methodology, the article develops the dynamics of pilgrimage environments and presents a new typology of four pilgrimage (sacred) and commercial (secular) destinations. By advancing knowledge and education, the spiritual-commercial role of the sacred- secular destinations in question offers a different, comprehensive approach to their management.

Hidden fish assemblages in Mediterranean Posidonia oceanica meadows are less diverse and abundant than in the cryptic spaces of neighboring habitats
Marcelo Kovačić, Igor Glavičič, Alen Soldo, Zoran Valić, Dejan Paliska, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The present research provides the first quantitative comparison of the hidden fish assemblages in Posidonia meadows and neighboring non-Posidonia habitats. The data and samples were collected at sixty sampling points at three locations on the south side of Brač Island in the eastern Adriatic Sea from October 2023 to June 2025. The gradient of a significant increase in fish abundance and average fish species richness in cuboids and the increase in the frequency of occurrence of fish species were observed from habitats inside Posidonia meadows, over the Posidonia meadow edge, to the habitats outside Posidonia meadows. The primary influence on the abundance was the rarity of species from the family Gobiidae within Posidonia habitats. The markedly different species composition between the Posidonia and non-Posidonia habitats was driven by the high species richness of the family Labridae in the Posidonia habitat compared to the high species richness of the family Gobiidae in the non-Posidon The Posidonia meadow edge showed overlap with the two other habitat types, sharing a number of species. The sampling protocol developed in this study is suitable for the quantitative assessment of fishes inhabiting hidden Posidonia microhabitats and provides a methodological basis for future research. The current knowledge of fish in Mediterranean Posidonia meadows, as well as the conservation consequences of still limited knowledge, are discussed.

Time-money segment differences in ideation and collaboration readiness in sustainable tourism education
Dejan Križaj, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This study examines whether tourism students’ self-reported time–money use patterns are related to their readiness to collaborate on idea development, and whether sustain- ability emerges spontaneously in their tourism innovation ideas. Using an anonymised dataset of open-ended questionnaire responses from Slovenian higher education tourism students (N = 597; 2019–2025), we applied deterministic rule-based coding to classify the presence of actionable ideas and sustainability framing, as well as collaboration readiness and conditions. Actionable ideas were common (53.4%), but sustainability framing was uncommon (7.5%). Most respondents were unconditionally willing to collaborate (69.3%), while 30.7% expressed conditional willingness or unwillingness. Time–money behavioural segments were significantly associated with collaboration reservations, whereas segment differences in ideation and sustainability framing were not significant. Among students expressing reservations, topic match and perceived team quality were the most frequently stated conditions. These findings indicate that sustainability-oriented tourism education should support both sustainability integration and low-risk collaboration through clear project briefs, topic-based matching, and team-process supports. The conclusions should be interpreted with reasonable caution as they are context-specific evidence based on self- reported, rule-coded responses, particularly for sustainability framing, where positive cases were rare. In this context, segmentation should be regarded as a diagnostic tool for course design rather than as a basis for labelling students.
