Bridging the individual and the system : preschool teachers’ agency in implementation for sustainable development in early childhood settings in south-eastern Europe
Aleksandra Šindić, Adrijana Višnjić-Jevtić, Jurka Lepičnik-Vodopivec, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Although the importance of Education for Sustainable Development in Early Childhood (ECEfS) is widely acknowledged, its implementation varies across different national, institutional, and individual contexts. This quantitative study involved 398 ECE teachers from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and Slovenia. The aim of the research was to identify differences in the implementation of specific dimensions of ECEfS and in the achieved sustainability outcomes among children, with respect to three levels of ECE teachers’ professional context: national, institutional, and individual. Data were collected via an online survey and analyzed using descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and t-tests. While the study was limited by reliance on self-assessment and purposive sampling, it provided valuable insights into how professional context shapes early sustainability practices and outcomes and raised questions for future research. Findings indicate the existence of differences among respondents from different countries in the level of implementation of certain aspects of early childhood education for sustainable development, as well as in children’s sustainability outcomes. Similar differences were identified between ECE teachers working in eco and non-eco kindergartens, and between those familiar and unfamiliar with the activities of the ECE Academy. The results highlight the importance of institutional context and professional development in supporting sustainability practices in early childhood education settings.

Recent Slovene Music and its Interpreters
Niall O’Loughlin, 2025, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Opis: A serious new music culture has been very strong in Slovenia, specially in the second half of the 20th century. The foundation for this has been very much enabled by the high-level skills and application of the performers, the interpreters of the music. This has encouraged the determination and enthusiasm of the composers, as well as the attention and participation of the audiences. Performers such as the violinist Igor Ozim, the pianist Aci Bertoncelj, the conductor Ivo Petrić and the Slovenska filharmonija and RTV Symphony Orchestra have been particularly notable in this process, giving a strong platform for new music. Vocal music at this time has been less prominent in new music by younger composers because performers seemed to be more involved in interpreting the older Lieder repertory. From the time of independence and into the 21st century, conditions have changed. All the signs were there that building on the achievements of the 20th century, there was a tremendous surge of enthusiasm for ensuring that a serious music culture was reinvigorated and growing. Solo instrumentalists and singers were trained to an even higher standard, making possible techniques and interpretative skills that were barely imagined earlier. Solo performers proliferated with particular contributions from violinists, cellists, clarinettists, flautists, brass players and pianists. Composers responded with large numbers of pieces that were performed at various platforms which included new music. While the adventurous ensemble music in the 20th century was mainly restricted to the work of the Slavko Osterc Ensemble, in the 21st century a number of new ensembles have been created with a corresponding increase in opportunities for composing music for these very skilled mostly young players. As earlier, a central role in encouraging the composition of new Slovene orchestral music has been the strong performing skills of the two professional orchestras in Ljubljana, especially in the orchestras’ concert seasons and in concerts of the Slovene Music Days. The attention to vocal and choral music has also developed very strongly among composers. Some opera singers who in the past have concentrated on the classics of the opera house have now been willing to attempt more difficult new locally composed operas. This has inevitably created a greater acceptance of new music in the opera house with composers producing new works, though this has been a very gradual process. Not only do older performers now pay attention to the 19th and 20th century ‘classics’ of Slovene music, but they have branched out into more adventurous idioms and they have been joined by the younger generation.

An attempt at an analysis of the factors influencing a conductor's artistic interpretation : Lovro von Matačić in Slovenia
Darja Koter, 2025, samostojni znanstveni sestavek ali poglavje v monografski publikaciji

Opis: The paper focuses on the artistic career of the conductor Lovro von Matačić (1899–1985) in his younger years, between the two world wars, when he frequently performed in Slovenia, a period that represented a source of inspiration and artistic growth. After examining the influence of musical training, which shapes and lays the foundation for the career of every artist, the paper then looks at previous scholarly analyses and findings and considers the influence of Matačić’s capacity for individual expression on the conductor’s rostrum, the pulsations of the cultural environment and the abilities of the performing ensembles with which Matačić worked on the overall principle of artistic expression. Matačić was a conductor capable of complementing the sound picture with the mental and emotional characteristics of the composer and the knowledge, abilities and energies of the performer. He believed that there was no such thing as a final or definitive interpretation and that a musical work is only “completed” when it is the subject of profound interpretation that takes into account the whole of the composer’s personality, the circumstances in which the work was created and the structure of the piece, while also giving due consideration to the composer’s idea, all musical elements and the architectural structure of the form. It was his conviction that immersing oneself in a composer’s oeuvre, their character and the circumstances surrounding the creation of a work was a lengthy process and therefore dedicated himself to certain specific works throughout his life, in this way deepening his contact with the composer and achieving interpretations of the highest possible calibre. Lovro von Matačić had highly developed intuitive abilities and great personal energy and these factors combined to shape his interpretation of a chosen work. He was an individual of tireless energy who breathed life into written music and, time and again, impressed upon it his own unique and convincing stamp.

Socialist entrepreneurship and integrated peasant economy : failed collectivization in Yugoslavia (1949–1953)
Lev Centrih, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This article explores the specific features of collectivization in socialist Yugoslavia, focusing on Slovenia as one of its constituent republics. Through a bottom-up approach, it examines selected cases from the countryside surrounding the Slovenian capital, Ljubljana, between 1949 and 1953. Unlike the Soviet and broader Eastern European cases, the Slovene/Yugoslav regime stemmed from both a socialist revolution and the National Liberation War. Alongside coercion, it used pragmatic strategies to win over the peasantry—allowing wealthier peasants to join labour cooperatives and promoting ‘entrepreneurship’, a value rooted in capital- ism, as a socialist principle. While aiming to preserve the industriousness of petty commodity production, the authorities sought to achieve this within a new environment: no longer in private enterprises, but in state or collective (cooperative) ones, protected from the destructive consequences of capitalism. Drawing on case studies, the article demonstrates that collectivization failed: Support from revolutionary activists proved insufficient, peasants rejected the proposed entrepreneurial model, and they con- tinued to pursue individualistic family farming. It explains the persistence of traditional agriculture through the concept of the integrated peasant economy, in dialogue with theories of pluriactivity and petty commodity production.

First molecular evidence of Leishmania parasites in sand flies (Diptera: Phlebotominae) from Slovenia
Gioia Bongiorno, Katja Adam, Ilaria Bernardini, Claudia Mangiapelo, Eleonora Fiorentino, Trentina Di Muccio, Vladimir Ivović, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Background Sand flies (Diptera: Phlebotominae) are vectors of Leishmania spp., protozoan parasites that cause leish- maniasis, a zoonosis endemic in the Mediterranean region. Although Slovenia is not considered endemic, its proximity to affected areas and the presence of competent vectors underscore the importance of entomological surveillance. As part of the CLIMOS project, we investigated sand fly species composition, seasonal abundance, and the presence of Leishmania parasites at two sites in southwestern Slovenia: Cetore and Velike Žablje. Methods From May to October 2023, adult sand flies were collected using Centers for Disease Control and Preven- tion (CDC) miniature light traps. Specimens were morphologically identified and screened for Leishmania spp. DNA using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) targeted kinetoplast DNA, followed by species confirmation with ITS-1 nested PCR and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis. Results A total of 274 sand flies were collected, predominantly Phlebotomus neglectus, P. perniciosus, and P. mascittii. Abundance peaked in July in Cetore and August in Velike Žablje, likely reflecting local climatic differences. Among 25 pools of female sand flies analyzed, Leishmania DNA was detected in three pools (12.0%), specifically in P. neglectus and P. mascittii. The cycle threshold values (Ct 35–37) indicated low parasite DNA loads. ITS-1 amplification was unsuc- cessful, likely due to low DNA concentration. Conclusions This study provides the first molecular evidence of Leishmania DNA in sand flies from Slovenia. The detection of Leishmania in P. mascittii, a species with uncertain vector competence, is particularly noteworthy and warrants further investigation. Although species identification of the parasite was not possible, the findings suggest potential for autochthonous transmission and highlight the need for continued surveillance and research in the region.

Agri-environmental schemes and input costs
Štefan Bojnec, Imre Fertő, 2025, objavljeni povzetek znanstvenega prispevka na konferenci (vabljeno predavanje)

Opis: Agri-environmental schemes (AECS) are integral components of the European Union’s Common Agricultural Policy, designed to promote environmentally sustainable farming practices and mitigate the adverse impacts of agriculture on ecosystems by providing financial incentives to farmers (Unay-Gailhard and Bojnec, 2016; Ait Sidhoum, Canessa, and Sauer, 2023). This study analyses the impact of AES participation on variable input costs for energy consumption, fertilizer use, and crop protection in Slovenia. Findings indicate that AES participation significantly reduces fertilizer, pesticide, and energy costs. While AES lower input costs, they may also lead to short-term yield reductions, potentially affecting farm profitability and farm efficiency (Baráth, Fertő, and Bojnec, 2020). These results highlight the need for complementary policies that enhance sustainable yield improvements and farm resilience. By promoting resource-efficient practices, AES contributes to reducing environmental externalities such as soil and water pollution and improving population wellbeing (Fukuyama, Hashimoto and Weber, 2020). The study underscores AES as essential for the transition to sustainable agriculture while emphasizing the challenge of balancing environmental, economic, and other sustainability objectives (Fertő and Bojnec, 2024, 2025). Policymakers should consider strategies that support both ecological benefits and farm income stability, ensuring long-term agricultural sustainability and resilience in the face of environmental and economic challenges.

Whole genome sequencing and identification of a new subtype of Borrelia lusitaniae from Ixodes ricinus tick in Slovenia
Katja Strašek Smrdel, Andraž Celar Šturm, Alenka Babič, Vladimir Ivović, Eva Ružić-Sabljić, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Background Vector-borne diseases are becoming increasingly important in public health. The incidence of Lyme borreliosis in Slovenia continues to rise. Therefore, screening the prevalence of Borrelia spp. in vectors and their hosts is very important. Rarely, but still, it is possible to discover new species or subtypes in a new region. Methods As part of a master’s thesis, a study group collected ticks in a coastal area of Slovenia. The ticks were incubated in an MKP medium for a possible Borrelia culture. Borrelia DNA was extracted from positive cultures. We performed classical molecular genotyping methods to complement whole genome sequencing (WGS) analysis. Results Using classical genotyping, we confirmed previously undetected Borrelia species in a Slovenian tick, Borrelia lusitanie. Using large restriction fragment polymorphisms (LRFP) with the enzyme MluI, we were able to detect a new LRFP subtype of Borrelia lusitanie, namely Mll3. Using WGS, we identified a new MLST type (ST-1154) and reconstructed five linear plasmids (lp17, lp25, lp28–8, lp54 and lp56+38) and two circular plasmids (cp26 and cp32–11+1). Conclusion Regular screening of vectors and their hosts for the presence of Borrelia pathogens is important to detect the spread of different species in new areas. When reconstructing Borrelia plasmids, it is very important to apply different assembly methods and to critically analyse the results in order to select suitable contigs for further trimming and to successfully generate a complete consensus genome of high quality from hybrid read data.

Monitoring of sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae) and pathogen screening in Slovenia with habitat suitability modeling
Vladimir Ivović, Peter Glasnović, Sara Zupan, Tea Knapič, Tomi Trilar, Miša Korva, Nataša Knap, Urška Glinšek Biškup, Tatjana Avšič-Županc, Katja Adam, 2025, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae) are important vectors of pathogens, including Leishmania parasites and phleboviruses, but their distribution and seasonal activity in Slovenia have not been sufficiently studied. This study presents a comprehensive three-year (2020–2022) surveillance programme aimed at assessing the diversity of sandfly species, their distribution, seasonal dynamics and potential role as vectors of pathogens. A total of 1,240 sandflies were collected at 43 sampling sites across Slovenia, identifying Phlebotomus papatasi, P. neglectus, P. perniciosus and P. mascittii. The highest abundance and species diversity were observed in the Mediterranean and Karst regions. Seasonal activity peaked in July, with population fluctuations influenced by climatic conditions. Molecular analyses for Leishmania parasites and phleboviruses showed no positive results, indicating a low prevalence of pathogens in the sampled populations. Predictive habitat models indicate that environmental factors, particularly temperature and precipitation, play a decisive role in the spread of sandflies. While P. mascittii has the largest ecological range, its vector competence remains uncertain. The results provide important insights into the ecology of sandflies in Slovenia and emphasize the need for continuous surveillance in the context of climate change and emerging vector-borne disease risks.
