Exploring cultural competence among healthcare professionals in Slovenia : a cross-sectional study
Esmina Softić, Mirko Prosen, 2026, original scientific article

Abstract: Aim: The aim of this study was to examine the cultural competence of healthcare professionals, with the aim of developing educational content on cultural competence in healthcare. Design: A quantitative descriptive approach with a cross-sectional design. Methods: The Slovenian version of the Cultural Competence Assessment Tool (CCATool) was administered to 404 participants representing various healthcare professions. Results: The results showed that most participants (96.2%) demonstrated cultural awareness, with significantly above-average scores across all domains (p < 0.001), while only 2.3% achieved full cultural competence and 1.5% were classified as culturally incompetent, with none achieving cultural safety. Conclusion: Incorporating cultural competency training into educational programs can significantly improve the quality of health services, help reduce health disparities, strengthen awareness of cultural diversity, and promote effective functioning in multicultural environments.

From spectator to stakeholder : how tourists perceive their agency in sustainable tourism development in an island destination
Kevin Fuchs, 2026, original scientific article

Abstract: Amid growing awareness of environmental and social responsibility, many tourists seek travel experiences that reflect their values. Sustainable tourism promotes a balance between development and the need to address evolving environmental and societal challenges. Grounded in Stakeholder Theory, this study explores how tourists perceive sustainable tourism and their role in supporting it. Forty-seven semi-structured interviews and observations with tourists in Phuket were thematically analysed. Five interrelated themes emerged: perceived limits of individual impact, sustainability as a trend, green destination branding and authenticity, situated ethics in tourism behaviour, and cultural variety in sustainability perspectives. While most participants endorsed sustainable tourism in principle, their engagement remained largely symbolic, shaped by uncertainty and context-dependent ethics. The findings reveal a gap between attitudes and meaningful action, emphasizing the need for clearer infrastructure, credible communication, and culturally sensitive engagement strategies. This study contributes to understanding tourists as stakeholders and informs efforts to enhance destination-level sustainability.

Digital teaching and copyright challenges under EU law : insights from Slovenian academic staff
Nina Krmac, Martina Kovačič, 2026, original scientific article

Abstract: In the context of increasingly digitised education, understanding the lawful use of copyrighted material has become essential for academic staff. This study examines university teachers’ awareness of copyright law and its practical application in teaching, particularly in online and distance learning environments. A quantitative survey was conducted among higher education teachers and faculty assistants at a selected Slovenian university using a structured questionnaire. The findings indicate that, although participants generally recognise the importance of copyright law, their practical knowledge—especially in scenario-based teaching situations—varies considerably. More experienced staff reported higher levels of understanding and greater caution in the use of copyrighted material, whereas less experienced staff more frequently reported practices that may fall outside compliant use. Respondents also expressed strong interest in copyright training, yet only a small proportion reported having access to training opportunities within the institution. The study is embedded in the broader legal framework of EU copyright law, in particular Directive (EU) 2019/790, which introduced mandatory exceptions for digital and cross-border teaching. This directive was transposed into Slovenian legislation in 2022. The results underscore the importance of strengthening legal literacy and institutional support mechanisms to facilitate copyright-compliant teaching in digital learning environments.

Translation of Situation Awareness Rating Technique Questionnaire in Slovenian
Kristina Stojmenova Pečečnik, Grega Jakus, 2025, independent scientific component part or a chapter in a monograph

Abstract: The Situational Awareness Rating Technique (SART) is a questionnaire designed to assess situational awareness when operating a machine. It consists of ten questions corresponding to ten dimensions that can be used to assess an operatorǯs situational awareness when interacting with and operating a machine. Although initially developed for assessment situational awareness of pilots, with the rising complexity of vehicles and introduction of automation, its use has spread significantly in automotive domain in the past decade. In this paper, we present the Slovenian version of the original questionnaire and the process of its development. For the translation of the questionnaire SART into Slovenian, the standard procedures for the translation of research instruments were applied: translation, coordination, back-translation into the source language, comparison of the back-translation with the source text and final coordination. Lastly, it was validated against a reference system in a driving-based environment.

Factors influencing the acceptance of alternative protein sources
Mojca Stubelj, Erika Gleščič, Boštjan Žvanut, Klemen Širok, 2025, original scientific article

Abstract: Introduction The adequate consumption of protein-rich foods is essential for optimal human growth, development and health. However, climate change threatens global food security by disrupting agriculture and food supply chains. One possible strategy to avoid this is a sustainable diet and the consumption of plant-based protein substitutes, insect-derived proteins and cultured meat. Methods The factors that could explain the (non-)acceptance of such foods in the population were investigated. The study included 458 adults who responded to our online questionnaire. Results The results of our survey showed that 66.2 % of the respondents were open to including plant-based sources in their diet. 23.1 % were willing to eat meals derived from insects and 21 % were willing to eat cultured meat. Acceptance of these alternative protein sources was found to be influenced by a number of factors, including demographics, familiarity, frequency of meat consumption and the intention to reduce meat consumption in the future. Men and people who had tried insect-based foods in the past were more favourable towards the consumption of insect-based foods and cultured meat. The regression analysis showed that the higher the level of neophobia towards food technologies and aversion to eating insects, the lower the interest in trying cultured meat. Women have a lower interest in trying cultured meat. Conclusions The consumer acceptance of new protein sources in the diet can be measured by assessing their attitudes towards such sources. This understanding can in turn facilitate the formulation of future public health strategies to create more sustainable dietary standards in the face of climate change.
