1. Virtual reality and declarative knowledge acquisition in hospitality management education : a classroom-based pilot studyMarko Kukanja, Saša Planinc, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: This study examines the effectiveness of a virtual reality (VR) application as a learning tool in higher hospitality education, focusing on declarative knowledge acquisition and test-based learning outcomes. Conducted as a classroom-based pilot study, it involved a census of undergraduate students enrolled in a restaurant management course (N = 28) and compared VR-supported learning with traditional instruction using printed materials. Declarative knowledge acquisition was assessed using identical multiple-choice pre- and post-tests. Results showed that scores improved across all students. A statistically signifi- cant time × group interaction indicated that the two groups improved at different rates over time. Students who learned using printed materials demonstrated greater improvement than those who used the VR application. The findings suggest that, in its implementation, the VR application did not demonstrate superior test-based knowledge outcomes compared to traditional learning. One possible explanation lies in the type of knowledge assessed: the test focused on declarative and recognition-based knowledge, whereas VR may be more effective for procedural and experience-based learning. The limited interactivity of the early-stage VR application (VR HOTEL v0.9.4) may have also constrained its instructional potential. Overall, the results highlight the importance of aligning VR-based learning activities with learning objectives, instructional design, and assessment methods. 2. Examining sound animation of visual artworks and its connection to the development of rhythmic sensitivity and perception in preschool childrenEda Birsa, Nika Gros, Barbara Kopačin, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between sound animation of visual artworks and the development of rhythmic sensitivity and perception in preschool children. The study employed a qualitative action research design conducted in a kindergarten setting in Slovenia and involved 36 preschool children. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and analysis of children’s visual and musical products, and were analysed using thematic analysis. The results indicate that multisensory and interdisciplinary activities contribute to the development of rhythmic perception, creative expression, and the transfer of rhythm between visual and auditory modalities. The findings emphasise the importance of integrating music and visual arts in early childhood education. 4. Efficient material selection for training occluded mmWave radar-based gesture recognisersNuwan Attygalle, Luis A. Leiva, Matjaž Kljun, Klen Čopič Pucihar, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Radar-based gesture recognition has emerged as a promising approach for unobtrusive interaction. Unlike camera-based systems, radar sensors can detect gestures through opaque materials, enabling seamless embedding into various everyday objects. However, it remains unclear how to train models efficiently for robust gesture recognition through diverse materials. To investigate this, we collected a dataset of 17,520 gesture recordings performed through 73 everyday materials. By comparing several material-sampling and data-augmentation strategies, we found that a small carefully selected representative subset of training materials was sufficient to match performance of a classifier trained on the full material dataset. Our results showed that the models trained on 14 quota-sampled materials achieved accuracies of 95.8% and 91.2%, comparable to training on all 73 materials (96.8% and 91.6%) and significantly better than training without material data (66.8% and 65.8%). Among the evaluated sampling approaches, Quota sampling also provided the best overall trade-off between performance and practicality. In contrast, classifiers trained on augmented data performed worse than those trained on actual material-specific data. Taken together, these findings indicate that, for the tested sensor, gesture set, and material collection, carefully selected real-material data offer a practical route to reducing material-specific data collection in radar-based gesture recognition while preserving generalisation. 6. PN-SCA : a high generalization and fast profiled SCA based on prototypical networksYu Ou, Yongzhuang Wei, Changhai Ou, Enes Pašalić, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: Recently, there has been a growing interest in scenarios that employ a few (imbalanced) power traces for deep learning based side-channel analysis (DL-SCA). Finding a lightweight DL-SCA architecture that is more generalizable and faster to learn is of great importance when handling such situations. In this work, an initial analysis is conducted on the capability of learning and the susceptibility to attacks of prevalent DL-SCA models, focusing on cases that culminate in an unsuccessful attack. Subsequently, a meta-learning technique, known as prototypical networks, is delineated for the construction of a lightweight deep learning framework. In contrast to conventional DL-SCA models, the proposed architecture, designated as PN-SCA, does not predict the probability of a power trace belonging to an intermediate value in classification. Instead, it facilitates the learning of an encoder capable of embedding power consumption data within a latent space, while also establishing templates, or prototypes, for diverse categories. Moreover, we developed a metric that is specifically intended for the selection of hyperparameters due to the unique training phase of PN-SCA. Finally, four distinct scenarios are established with few (including one imbalanced) power traces to evaluate the correctness of our architecture. Le Roux, Matjaž Kljun, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: While many digital distractions can be managed, real-world interruptions, such as phone calls, notifications, and office noise, are harder to control and can harm productivity, well-being, and learning. Mixed reality systems like Augmented Reality (AR) are often described as immersive—a property which might protect users from such disruptions. We tested this assumption by comparing a head-mounted AR interface that overlays digital annotations on physical objects with a traditional flat screen during vocabulary learning under common office distractions. In a user study (n = 32), AR users reported feeling less distracted and recalled less task-irrelevant information, but their learning performance did not improve. Instead, distraction-related performance decline was greater in AR. Physiological and self-report measures showed no reduction in effort or workload, and participants with higher auditory distractibility did not benefit. Overall, AR annotation alone may not sufficiently shield learners from real-world distractions, motivating new design approaches. 8. Time-money segment differences in ideation and collaboration readiness in sustainable tourism educationDejan Križaj, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: This study examines whether tourism students’ self-reported time–money use patterns are related to their readiness to collaborate on idea development, and whether sustain- ability emerges spontaneously in their tourism innovation ideas. Using an anonymised dataset of open-ended questionnaire responses from Slovenian higher education tourism students (N = 597; 2019–2025), we applied deterministic rule-based coding to classify the presence of actionable ideas and sustainability framing, as well as collaboration readiness and conditions. Actionable ideas were common (53.4%), but sustainability framing was uncommon (7.5%). Most respondents were unconditionally willing to collaborate (69.3%), while 30.7% expressed conditional willingness or unwillingness. Time–money behavioural segments were significantly associated with collaboration reservations, whereas segment differences in ideation and sustainability framing were not significant. Among students expressing reservations, topic match and perceived team quality were the most frequently stated conditions. These findings indicate that sustainability-oriented tourism education should support both sustainability integration and low-risk collaboration through clear project briefs, topic-based matching, and team-process supports. The conclusions should be interpreted with reasonable caution as they are context-specific evidence based on self- reported, rule-coded responses, particularly for sustainability framing, where positive cases were rare. In this context, segmentation should be regarded as a diagnostic tool for course design rather than as a basis for labelling students. 10. Prosthetic memory and film-induced dark tourism in the specific post-conflict context : a divergent young adults’ perspectiveMetod Šuligoj, Jasna Hartman, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The present postmodernist study explores how widely accessible films depicting tragic historical sites/events influence prosthetic memories and film-induced dark tourism among Western Balkan (the ‘region of memory’) young adult new-age platform users with no personal war experience. A heterogeneous list of ten internation - ally known historical films, compiled with the help of informants, was the basis for discussion in three nationally diverse focus groups (Croatian, Serbian, Bosnian- Herzegovinian) and then compared with a comparison group from a less stressed environment. The results of the content analysis with triangulation are discussed, and explaining the missing prosthetic memory, factual knowledge and film-induced dark tourism nexus among young adults in a peculiarly toxic post-conflict atmosphere. The study thus identifies historical film and dark tourism abstainers and explains deviations not pre - viously reported in studies of the above concepts, taking into account the specific social environment and age group.
