No place like home : assessing the multidimensional habitat use of endangered Arabian Sea humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae, Borowski 1781) with satellite telemetryAndrew John Willson, Robert Baldwin, Simon Childerhouse, Salvatore Cerchio, Tim Collins, Tilen Genov, Howard Gray, Amy Kennedy, Darryl MacDonald, Matthew John Witt, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: The Arabian Sea humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae; ASHW) is understood to be the only population of this species that does not undertake long-range seasonal migrations between high- and low-latitude waters. Until recently, understanding the movements and range of individual ASHWs has relied mainly on comparisons of dorsal fin and tail-fluke images archived in photo-identification catalogues and on observations made during small-vessel surveys off the coast of Oman since 2000. The ASHW population is classified as Endangered by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, with an estimated 82 individuals off Oman’s coast (95% CI: 60–111), and faces increasing anthropogenic threats throughout its known range. To better understand the spatial ecology of this population, 14 Argos-enabled satellite tags were attached to ASHW off the Arabian Sea coast of Oman between February 2014 and December 2017. Individuals were tracked for a total of 749 days (mean=53, SD = 42, range=18–163 days) producing 484 days of depth-use data (mean=44, SD = 26, range=15-87). Home ranges extended along the western Arabian Sea coastline of northern Yemen and southern Oman, with a core area in the Gulf of Masirah (Oman). Switching state-space models revealed predominant area restricted search behavior (associated with breeding and foraging behavior) over continental shelf areas, with transiting movements occurring further offshore. The widest-ranging individual (a female, tag longevity 120 days) completed a round trip across the Northwest Indian Ocean between the Gulf of Masirah and the Gulf of Mannar (India). The track of this animal, and others along the coast of Oman, revealed an overlapping relationship between ecological drivers related to habitat use, including foraging and breeding, with fishing and shipping activities. The findings demonstrate the unique ecology of ASHW compared to other humpback whale populations and underscores the need for national and international authorities to incorporate these results into management initiatives to safeguard this small and Endangered population.

4. Major sport events returning to emerging sports tourism nations : willingness to pay for the EuroBasket in SloveniaSimon Ličen, Renata Slabe Erker, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: As Slovenia prepares to co-host the 2029 EuroBasket, or European Basketball Championship for men, this article examines the variables that influenced taxpayers’ willingness to support public backing for a previous rendition of the tournament. The authors surveyed 374 Slovenian taxpayers when the country hosted the event in 2013, and determined that on average, they stated a willingness to pay (SWTP) of €18.7 per person. A Tobit model showed that belief in the societal impact of sports events and the nation-building potential of the tournament increased SWTP by €5.1. Wealthier respondents were less willing to contribute; to overcome this challenge, future promotional campaigns should target higher earners. Beyond money, respondents valued intangible benefits including national pride, international recognition, and skills gained in event organization and marketing. When Slovenia co-hosts the tournament again in 2029, the local organizing committee should spotlight both tangible and emotional benefits, amplify community narratives, and design curated promotional campaigns to secure the trust of a broad range of supporters and stakeholders.

Sacred or sold? : A systems approach to balancing spirituality and commercialisation in faith-based tourismTadeja Jere Jakulin, Dane Munro, 2026, izvirni znanstveni članek Opis: This paper examines the complexity of pilgrimage tourism, with its interdependencies among sacredness, spirituality, and commercialisation at faith-based tourism destinations. We use a Systems Approach to move beyond linear thinking that positions spirituality and commerce as inherently oppositional forces, arguing that pilgrimage destinations function as complex adaptive systems in which spiritual, commercial, and educational objectives interact dynamically. We build Causal Loop Diagrams (CLDs) formed from autoethnographic observation and stakeholder discussions. We present and compare four pilgrimage sites: Lourdes (France), Brezje (Slovenia), Malta, and Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia (Türkiye). The CLD models reveal the dynamics of the pilgrimage sites, the interdependencies, and the interactions among stakeholders (elements of the system). The systems approach demonstrates that successful destinations manage pilgrimage sites as integrated systems in which activities complement and constrain one another through feedback loops. Using a Systems Methodology, the article develops the dynamics of pilgrimage environments and presents a new typology of four pilgrimage (sacred) and commercial (secular) destinations. By advancing knowledge and education, the spiritual-commercial role of the sacred- secular destinations in question offers a different, comprehensive approach to their management.
