Title:Let's try!
Abstract:Pupils in the second triennium of primary school and older ones should fully comprehend the concept of buoyancy and related terms density, mass and volume. Unfortunately, they do not. We carried out a research with 88 fourth grade pupils at the end of the school year and found out that a common misconception among the pupils is that heavy objects sink and light objects float. Therefore, we conducted a lesson, in which pupils and of their teachers carried out experiments, to explain and clearly demonstrate that buoyancy depends on the mass and shape of an object as well as on the density of a fluid in which the object is placed. After the lesson we tested the pupils again. The results suggest an improvement in pupils' understanding of buoyancy. We still need to take some steps to achieve the final objective, the proper understanding of buoyancy. We will focus on the pre- and post-test results and list how and which experiments were carried out and what still needs to be done to gain a thorough understanding of buoyancy.
