Adaptive strategies in response to the economic crisis
Dietmar Sternad, 2012, original scientific article

Abstract: This study builds on prior research on culture-specific differences in strategic decision-making and strategic issue analysis, and extends it to the field of strategic crisis adaptation. Taking an upper echelons perspective, it is investigated whether the cultural dimension of uncertainty avoidance had an effect on strategic directions that managers chose in response to the 20082009 global financial and economic crisis. Building on a framework of strategic crisis responses and a quantitative survey conducted among 257 managers in Austria and Slovenia, the findings suggest that strategic issue interpretations of the economic crisis as well as country differences influence whether firms are using externally versus internally-directed strategic responses, and pro-active versus retrenchment strategies. The differences in strategy deployment between the two countries, however, could not be consistently traced to differences in the cultural dimension of uncertainty avoidance, thus suggesting that other country-specific factors like institutional or social differences also play an important role.

Renata Krakowska, 2013, original scientific article

Abstract: The purpose of the article is to attempt to answer the question of how the crisis affected the banking systems of cee countries, with special emphasis on liquidity risk. It seems that this problem has particularly affected emerging economies. First, the liquidity risk began to exert considerable influence on the functioning banking system and, indirectly, the whole economy. In this paper author wanted to answer the following questions: What are the channels of transmission systemic risk on cee markets? What is the role of big world banking groups in these financial systems? This concept is applied to ten Central Eastern European countries, which experienced a financial crisis. In the research author hypothesized about interconnectedness of liquidity in financial systems and solvency problems of big banking groups operating in CEE.

Workforce professional skills development in times of economic crisis
Irina Alina Popescu, 2013, original scientific article

Abstract: Using unique individual-level data on the continuous professional training courses completed over the period 20072011 this paper addresses a topic a major concern for policy-makers and businesses in the light of the recent transformations emerging markets have suffered during the global financial crisis. The paper presents the analysis of the evolution of the demand for continuous professional training and the changes in the structure of the demand under the circumstances of the economic crisis. Findings reveal a significantly higher demand for continuous professional training for acquiring new qualifications in jobs requiring low educational attainment and competences in foreign languages and information technology in 2008 and 2009, while specializing and performance trainings in qualifications requiring secondary and tertiary education registered a significant increase during 2010 and 2011. More so, the average skill level of professional training is on the rise, demonstrating an increased preference for highly skilled jobs, in the detriment of the low skilled jobs.
